Hello,
I have a mystery. I am related to James Gillespie b 1845 d 1906. I have a picture of his family gravestone taken at Mt. Hermon Cemetery, Sillery, Quebec. On the stone with James is his wife Alice MacWilliam b 1849 d 1924. My problem is that I found the marriage record for James and Alice, and it clearly says her maiden name is Gillan. That was 1869. I also found the marriage record from 1901 for their son, William Gillespie, and it lists his mother as "Alice Gillan". So how does one explain this? Was Alice originally a Gillan or a MacWilliam?
Any feedback would be appreciated!
Thanks, MaryAnn
