Gillespie's tombstone in Meerut India says "Vellore. Cornelles [or Corselis]. Palembang. Sir R.R. Gillespie, Djocjocarta, 31st October 1814. Kalunga.

What does Cornelles/Corselis refer to? I can't find a place by that name. Is it incorrectly recorded?

My grandfather was William Baker Peters. He had three children with Elizabeth: Lucretia, Ruth, and William D. Lucretia had two children, Ruth had four, and William D. had one child, me, Suzanne. They lived in Toledo where I still reside. Looks as though we share great grandparents--William Henry and Della Gillespie Peters! We know little about the Peters' family, so I would appreciate any information that you would be willing to share, especially about William Baker Peters. Through my researching, I found some information about William Henry Peters' father. His name was Daniel Peters who was born in 1811 in Virginia and lived in Guernsey and Hocking Counties, Ohio. He married Lucretia Jackson. They had four children: Lucinda(1838), Mary(1842), William Henry(1845/1849?), and John(1850). I am trying to find information regarding Daniel's parents and their place of birth.

My Grandfather was Frank J Peters. He left 3 daughters in Columbus, Ohio one of which was my Mother. Daisy L was his sister and she took my Mother and adopted her and changed her name. Daisy married a man by the name of Cummins. My Mothers original name was Josephine Peters, it was changed to Mary Louella Cummins. The other 2 girls were Lillian and Florence. The 3 girls remained close all their lives. Frank was in Cleveland area during the late 40's & early 50's. I understand he died in California. At the time Frank left them they lived on Maynard Ave., in Columbus, Ohio. Daisy, my Mother are both buried in Union Cementary. Daisy in the old section along Olentangy River Rd and my Mother by the hospital. My Mother was born 2-15-1912. Lillian was the oldest, then Florence, then Mary (Josephine). My cousin is getting together more information and forwarding to me. Lillian lived with her until her death and kept in closer touch with the Peters side of the family than I did. Each one of the girls had one child each. Lillian was married to Thomas Grabowski they had one daughter Louise and lived in Columbus. Florence was married to Harry Givens and had a son Jerry. They lived in Elyria, Ohio. Mary married George Lehman, lived in Columbus, Ohio had one daughter, me Marcia. I have stayed in contact with Louise, but no one else. My Mother died 9-14-1962 at the age of 50. If you want any further info let me know and I'll help all I can.

Della Amanda Gillespie was married to William Henry Peters. They had four children: Louis Jackson, William Baker, Daisy L., Frank J. In 1860, they were living in Hocking, Ohio. By 1900, they lived in Columbus, Ohio. William Henry Peters was born on Jan. 15, 1849, in Guernsey County Ohio or Virginia and died on Jan. 27, 1919, in Columbus. His parents names were Daniel Peters and Lucretia Jackson. According to an Ohio death report, Della Gillespie Peters parents were Baker Gillespie and Rebecca Bower. Della was born on Aug. 15, 1860 in Ohio, and died on Aug. 15, 1933, in Columbus Ohio. They are buried at Union Cemetary, Columbus, Ohio. My grandfather was William Baker Peters. William Baker Peters was born in Hocking, Ohio March 5, 1877 and died on Dec. 1, l944 in Columbus. He was married to Minta, Elizabeth with whom he had three children, and Bertha. I am researching the Peters' history and would appreciate any information.

My Great Grand Mother is Gladys. My Great Uncle Clyde wrote a book called "The Fist 20 Years." I have a copy of it. Also, I have a hand written family tree of the Gillespies by my Great Grand Mother Gladys. Starting with George Gillespie 1613-1684 and ending with Ollie Gillespie Died Feb 6th 1908.

James Edgar & Janet Gillespie

I am looking for information on James Edgar who was born in Ireland around 1826. He married Janet Gillespie in Scotland at age 23. In the 1851 census James Edgar is listed in the parish of Old Cumnock. He is the head of the household, aged 24 and an Ironstone Miner born in Ireland. Janet is his wife, aged 23 and the son Charles is 3 months old. A further two children were born in Scotland, Elizabeth in 1853 and James in 1857. The next time we see this family is in NSW Australia where they are now living under the name of Gillespie instead of Edgar. Children born in NSW Janet 1859, Joseph 1862, Allen 1864, Martha 1866, William 1868 and Margaret 1870. They settled in the Vacy/Paterson area in NSW.

Hi, Her father was James William Gillispie, married in 1884 to Samantha Katherine Davis (Baylous - death cert says Bais) Samantha on the 1901 Cinti Dir lists herself as a widow. Didn't Ron Beach say that Nora was a name that she decided to take when Lenora died?

The Gillespie Bros were West India Merchant. It started with Alexander Marshall Gillespie and then his sons William & Colin took over at his death. I have not found a brother James involved in this venture.

My father was actually John Robert Judge (known as Robert within the family) and had a sister called Margaret. They were the two children of the first marriage. He originally married Elizabeth Collins.

Hi just started to research my family tree, my G.g.g grandfather was a Richard gillespie of Glanmire cork, his father was also Richard Gillespie married to Eliza with I think 8 children although I only have names for 4 of them, one of them William Henry was drowned in the titanic diaster in 1912, Ada Ruth who married a Ernest william King, and catherine Jane also known as Kitty who was my paternal great grandmother wondered if it was the same line of gillespies ?

I am having a problem finding Davids parents and any siblings he might have had. David was born 1815 in Virginia ( this is unsure some say Virginia, some say Tazwell Co., some say W. Virginia). He married Mary Francis Reddish May 26 1846 in Parke Co., Indiana. They then moved to Iowa by 1856.

My widowed great grandmother,Una Gillespie Dougherty, arrived at the port of New York on 14 Aug 1883 with her five children (Margaret 20, John 18, Patrick 15, James 11 and Mary 9). They went directly to Wilkes-Barre where I am certain they must have had relatives from back home to help them get established. Una's husband was a Patrick Dougherty (Doherty) and he was a farmer/fishermen from the Townland of Towney (West), Kilcar, SW Donegal. Unfortunately, while there were a few Dougherty and Gillespie families in the Wilkes-Barre area at that time I have never been able to connect them with mine. At that time period, however, it would be very unlikely for a widow with young children to go to a place where she had no support. I mention this because it might help other Gillespie researchers working in WB area to know of the Towney/Gillespie/Wilkes-Barre connection in my family. Gillespie was a very common surmane in Kilcar and adjacent Glencolumbkille Parishes (Harkins is not)and the surname seems to have been there since very early times. The Gillespie's were herenaghs in Kilcar Parish and some of that surname were Parish Priests in the 15th century. Those Gillespies looking for a place of origin in Ireland for their WB Gillespies should check out Kilcar and Glen Parishes.

Mary Ella Knowles b. should have been New York and not England

If there are other children besides Frederick Henry Gillespie, I am unaware of them at this time.

The Margaret Gillespie I have, listed as Pioneers/Daughters of the Golden West, was the Daughter of William and Mary, was married to Samuel Duell. She was born in Yuba Co. about 1863. The Ella I have was my Great Grandmother, Daughter of Lewis and Louisa Hale. her first marriage was to Rufus Maze, second marriage was to Thomas Jefferson Gillespie.

The records I spoke of, I already have, it only cost $2 for each. I scanned to my other comp. but it crashed, so I had to rescan to this comp. then saved to a memory stick. The records are from the Native Daughters of the Golden West. The ones I have, the info was given by Ollie Gillespie/Holmes,Daughter of T. J. Gillespie, and Ella Hale.

Interested in your Margret Gillespie. I have been looking for my Margret's parents. She married a Turner and had a brother named Noble Gillespie (and eventually a daughter named Ella) in Chicagoland/Indiana area. They immigrated in 1880 from Ireland. I think she had gone there from Scotland.

I know they are related to other Gillespies in the area but we have lost touch. Does any other this sound familar to you in your Gillespie searches? Thanks for any help you might offer.

Can't put my hands on it at the moment but I recall a newspaper article about a Gillespie / Turner relative inquiring about this passenger. My Great Grandmother was a Gillespie of Scottish decent married a Turner from Ireland. They came to the US in 1880 James Alexander Turner, Margrette Issabelle Gillespie Turner and brother Noble Gillespie. If I find it I'll post back. It was via ancestry.

Hello Jo, I'm another cousin, GGrandaughter of Thomas Jefferson Gillespie, another son of our elusive Thomas Monroe Gillespie. I have been intouch with Terri for some time, so sad wish I could say I lived in CA. but now live in Alabama. I am however eligible for Native Daughters of the Golden West.
I havent joined, but Ollie E. Gillespie (my Grandmother)gave info to them as to when and how Gillespies came to California. I have sent for some of the records they have. It's $2 for each record. I need to rescan them due to computer crash :-( We should be looking in Ill. for G. info

KNOXVILLE, Iowa - Charles D. Gillespie, 63, Knoxville, formerly of Muscatine, died Tuesday, May 1, 2007, at the VA Medical Center in Knoxville.

A memorial has been established at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in his name.

The Rev. Lloyd Mansfield will officiate services. There will be no visitation.

Charles Daniel Gillespie was born on May 28, 1943, in Muscatine, the son of Charles Emerson and Helen Ann (Pahl) Gillespie.

He attended one year of college and then joined the U.S. Navy serving from July 31, 1962, to Oct. 25, 1962, during the Vietnam War.

He worked in manufacturing and enjoyed sports.

He is survived by one brother, Thomas Gillespie, of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Hi. My GGrandfather Michael Gillespie also came through NY in 1892 with his brother in law Hugh Harkins. His wife and first son Josephe came over a few years later. So far I havn't found any connections to other Gillespies in WB / area. My Gillespie's settled in Ashley/Hanover, a section of WB. John Storrie Gillespie - USA 1930

Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me with this ancestor of mine.

I'm trying to find out what happened to my grandfather's brother, John Storrie Gillespie b. 13 Apr 1899 in Paisley, Renfrewshire to James & Janet nee Storrie.

He emigrated to the USA in 1920, and by 1928 was living in Michigan, Detroit. He applied for naturalisation on 28 Jan 1928. I've found him in the 1930 census, living with a family as a roomer but can't find anything else about him. He had a sister named Janet King Gillespie, who also lived in Michigan with her husband Andrew Wingate although I can't find any info on him after 1930.

Any ideas as where to look next ?
