Elvis Eugene Gillit was my dad. He died 3/18/1983 and is buried in Albany Texas. I don't know much about him since I was only 18 months old when he died. My sister and half sister know more about him and that is where I get anything I need to know. If you are still interested you can email me at lacijeffers@amaonline.com.

Ann GILLET -- Marsh, England

Dear Diane,

I saw your e.mail regarding Gillets from Moreton in Marsh, England. I have been looking for someone who went to Canada, Ontario. not sure of the dates, or name of family. But on my tree I have a Ann Gillet from Moreton in Marsh, who married Noah Robinson 1823. I thought the person who went to Canada could have been a son or daughter from Ann Gillet and Noah Robinson. I don't know if Ann Gillet is related to your Gillet, but if they came from Moreton in Marsh, then there is a good chance. On your side of the Gillet family, do you know if they lived in Canada, Ontario?.

Regards
Michelle Davenport

Hi, I saw you post and I do have info. Linus was married three times, Ester A Gillett, Lucinda Davies, and Julia A Pitts. Lucinda died 25 August 1860, Linus was married to Julia 12 Sept. 1861 in Lee County, Illinois. They had 11 children, three of whom died young. Linus is buried in Amboy, Lee County, Illinos, in Prairie Repose Cemetery. I have a picture of his tombstone. Would you like to swap pictures? I would like to have one of his children. My gg grandpa, Henry Holcomb, was a brother to Linus 1823-1892. Sheila

Thank you so much for confirming what I suspected. In fact, my great grandfather left behind a journal that states that his grandfather, Abel Ferris Gillette, went to Butternuts to visit a sister. So this makes very much sense. I only have five children for John and Pollyfeme. Do you know the names/dates of their children? Do you by any chance have a marriage date for John and Pollyfeme?
Abel Ferris Gillette was married to Lucy Platt (not Pratt) with whom he had four children. His second wife was Mary H. Perkins which he married on 2 Apr 1843 in Newtown. He divorced Mary, and they had no children. His third wife, Ann Clingham, was from Ireland. Abel and Ann had two children, Lucy and James F.
I very much appreciate any more help I can get in piecing this family together. Thank-You.

John Gillet of Newtown, Connecticut

I am looking for a John Gillet who was the son of Eunice (Clark) and Samuel Gillet and lived in Newtown, Connecticut. I do not know the name of John’s wife. His children were Jerusha, Abel Ferris, Anna, Polly, and David, as far as I know. I think this may be the John Gillet baptized in Newtown on 20 Nov 1748. I also believe that this is the descendancy: William Gylet, Jeremiah Gillet, Sgt. Jeremiah Gillet, John Gillet who married Sarah Tryon, Samuel Gillet who married Eunice Clark, John Gillett (who married ?), and Abel Ferris Gillette. My third great grandfather’s, Abel Ferris Gillette’s, history states the Gillet family in Newtown dates back to 1709 when John Gillet (I believe the one that married Sarah Tryon) came from Wethersfield, Connecticut and settled it is believed in the Palestine district. There are several Abel Gilletts and several John Gilletts, etc. I want to make sure I am putting this family together correctly. Any information I can find on these families from Newtown would be greatly appreciated.

My gg grandfather and your gg grandfather were brothers. Probably born in Washington county N.Y. I would like to find out when they came to IL. and when Linus and Julia were married. I would like to find out who and when their children married. If they owned property and what they did for a living? I would also like to find a picture of Linus which I may never find.
I tried reply to your e-mail address but for some reason it failed.
Thank for any help you can give me and again if I can help you please let me know.
Valerie

Gillet yDNA Surname Project Update

We now have five participants in the Gillet/Gillett/Gillette surname project. One participant uses the Gillet spelling. Two participants are from the USA, one from Canada, and one from France. The fifth is anonymous. The yDNA results show that none of us are related. Two participants do match on 9 out of 12 markers, which is not a close match at all. We need more participants to help us discover family lines. If you are interested please visit our website hosted by Family Tree DNA (www.ftdna.com).
Hi, I was searching for information and i ran across your post of 2003. I have some info on Linus. I was born and raised in Sterling/Rock Falls, Illinois and my gg grandfather was Henry Holcomb who would be an uncle to this Linus. I found Linus' grave in Amboy, Lee County, Illinois and I have a picture of the grave. He did die in 1892 and was married three times, according to the info I have. I have birth dates on his children but not much else. If you still need info, I could take a trip there this summer. I still have family in the area. Let me know what you are looking for and I will see what I can do. Sheila

Does anyone have a Lester Gillet in their database? Don't know when he was born or who his parents were. I do know he was related to my Gillet/Gillett/Gillette line. I have come across two letters written by Lester Gillet from Farmington, CT, to Abisha Gillet in Gustavus, OH. One letter is dated 1818 and the other is dated 1823. He refers to Abisha as "cousin". Abisha is a half brother to the Amos Gillet I have been researching and finding these letters proves Abisha was in OH by 1818. His half-brother, Amos, came c. 1837. I'm guessing this Lester Gillet was b. abt. 1790. Any leads as to who Lester Gillet is would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ron, So that would make Lester and Abisha second cousins or first cousins once removed, right? If Lester is Benoni's son, is there also a Hart connection?
In the letter dated Feb. 6,1819, there is a section addressed to Joseph Hart (Joseph is Abisha's uncle. He is brother to Abisha's mother, Almira Hart) The part addressed to Joseph reads: Worthy Uncle, I take this opportunity to return you my thanks for favoring me with a letter in connection with Abishas, I hope you will continue in so doing every convenient opportunity, and I hope I shall have the pleasure to wait on you and some if not all of your family at our house next fall, as my circumstances are such that I cannot visit you with convenience, I will here myself mention to you that Levia and her husband reside at Mr Eben Thomson's this winter, as he has hired a part of his house--and how long they will stay there I know not--but I think they will not remove to any great distance at present. I have no more to write you at this time in particular so I close by sending my regards to you and yours and subserviling (I really can't make out this word. It definitely ends in 'ing' and I think it's a version of the word, subservient or servile) myself your affectionate nephew, Lester Gillet
Below that, it says: In looking over my letter I see I have not mentioned anything in particular about your Mother, I now mention it here, she is comfortable & chunk for her

And that's it. I thought perhaps Lester might be a son of Isaac and Elizabeth (Hart) Gillet. I don't know the names of their children, do you? Isaac and Amos Gillet were brothers (both sons of Noah) and Elizabeth and Almira were sisters (both daughters of Gideon and Elizabeth (Woodruff) Hart. So-o-o confusing. Thanks for the reply.

Pierre Frederic Gillet & Elizabeth Marguerite Roux of Seloncourt, France

Pierre Frederic Gillet was born about 1796 to Pierre Gillet and Catherine Marchand. He married in 1816, Elizabeth Marguerite Roux, daughter of Charles Roux and Anne Marie Gillotte. Might Gillotte and Gillet been related, but the names spelled differently? Pierre Frederic had children: Pierre Frederic Gillet, 1818, Susanne, 1820 and Adele, 1822. He died in 1824. Elizabeth married Jacques Frederic Tuefferd (sp?) in Seloncourt and had two more children: Marianne Elizabeth, 1829 and Jacques Frederic, 1832. I have more on the Roux line if anyone is related.
