I don't think it is the same William, mine was born 1821, he was a cab driver,he had twins, Robert and Rosa, Robert born 1853 St John Marylebone was a coachman, he had a son Charles (Frederick)born 1885 who was my grandfather, who married Agnes Mary Beckingham in 1911.
Unless I have got it wrong!
My only definate source is a marriage certificate for Charles (26 at date marriage in 1911 therefore born 1885)showing his father was Robert and he was a coachman and I have tried to work from that.
I hope this helps you to see if there is any relationship.

Hi Diane,
It must be 3 years since I have checked this message board. My William W. S. Gillett was born in Lyme, New London Co, CT on May 2, 1808, according to his death article in New Lyme, Ashtabulah Co, Ohio, abt Feb 5, 1854. The only Gillett Family that I can find in Lyme, is Joseph Gillet & Mary Miner. So I THINK he is their youngest son, but there is NO hint as to who WWS parents are. WWS youngest daughter Mary Elln Gillett/Blue/Wright, writes that her father was "Disowned" by his family. Of coarse no further explination is given. WWS was maried in Lyme CT to Huldah wade. They moved almost immeadiatley to Ashtabulah Co, Ohio.

I am looking for research on Joseph Gillett, b-november 1756, & lived in Lyme, New London Co, CT. Two books say that he & Mary Miner, had a son William b-1808. If this book is known to have any information about this. I'd move a mountain to find it. My feble memory seems to remember that Wilma may have provided the information.

Somehow, some way, Lyman, Virden and Harkness (who married Ruth West, and named a son Virden) all relate and I suspect it is through Joab.
As I said, my mother Molly still lives in Rye but not in the big house on Grandview Ave. She's at the Osborn retirement community. We were talking about Aunt Kay McClintock the other day. How is she doing? I live in Seattle but get back to Rye about 3 or 4 times a year.

I am a newcomer to Ancestry.com and have a lot of information about the Gilletts, going back to Jacques de Gylet who fled France after the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre of 1572. The info is listed on my "Laird Family Tree".

I am a great-granddaughter of Charles Ripley Gillett and Katherine Van Kirk. My grandfather was their younger son William Van Kirk Gillett. I have recently started looking for information about Katherine's family and haven't gotten very far. I have her d.o.b. as 12 April 1857. Her father was William Van Kirk born in about 1821 in NY, and her mother was Deborah J. ?, dob circa 1830. If you have any further information about the Van Kirks, I would love to be able to add it to my tree! My mother, age 87, remembers the time of her grandfather death but not when her grandmother died. They are buried in Norfolk, CT where they had a summer home.

I am researching the New York strand of the GILLETT family for a friend of mine whose name is Dennis GILLETT. His ancestors were Truman GILLETT Sr (wife, Phoebe SLITER), Truman GILLETT Jr (wife, Fidelia TEAL). and Maxon Kinyon GILLETT. GILLETT Sr. was a Free Will Baptist minister and GILLETT Jr. was an Elder in the Mormon church. Both were born in upstate New York (Sr. in 1783 and Jr. in 1812). Do you have any idea who GILLETT Sr.'s father was and where he was living at the time of Sr.'s birth?
Samuel Gillett b 1855 Marston, Beds

Hi, looking for info and descendants of the above who married my 3x great grandmother May Clark in 1890 in Woolwich. He adopted my 2xgreat grandfather John Robert Jones who became John Robert Gillett and followed Samuel into the Royal Artillery. Samuel trained as a tailor as a young man but joined the army between 1871 and 1881. His first wife was Annie Elizabeth Hadley, with whom he had at least 2 children - Annie Elizabeth Gillett who married George Mitchell, and Hannah M. Gillett. There were other children but doubts Samuel was their father as at least one was fathered by Sam's brother John. Sam's first wife died in 1887 and after Sam married May they had 3 more children that I know of - Samuel Charles who died in WW1, Cuthbert and Lena May. Lena May married Chiltern Wilkinson. I would be very glad to hear fom anyone descended from any of Samuel's children, from either his first or second marriage, or anyone who has info regarding his army career. Thanks

Please contact me direct at jthorn7376@aol.com & I'll hook the two of you up directly. Seems as though theres more on Fred at the library.
Jake

I found some info for the people who wanted it but did not have their e-mail so I am sending to you to forward or else send me the address so I can.

John E. Ulmer was the father of Freds wife May.I found an obit of sorts but could not figure how to turn on the copy machine. They do something to it because people keep forgetting to turn it off and I was alone up there.
John E. Ulmer was born in Carlisle, PA. in 1845. He moved to Monmouth, IL when he was 7. He died 16 Jul 1909 and was buried in the monmouth cemetery. He was in the 11th IL Calvary, Co. K in the Civil War under Col. Bob Ingersoll. He was married to Josephine Shellenberger. For about 20 yrs he was asst superentendant of streets for Monmouth.
At the time of his death it says that his daughter, Mrs Fred Gillett lived in Wichita, KS.

I didn't have a lot of time so when I go back if no one is there the people downstairs should know how to turn it on and I will copy the article and email it to them or you.
Hi Robin, thanks for the note. My Wm W. S. Gillett is from Lyme, New London, CT b-1808, but I need to find a record of his parents. That one bit of fact will take me back to when the Gillett boys came to America. Just that one little gap to fill. WWS youngest daughter says in her husbands Blue Family records. That her father was "Disowned" by his family, but does not give a reason. As far as I know, no one in my network has family that remembers his parents. They just disappear. There is circumstancial evidence that his parents may be Joseph Gillett & Mary Wimer. Who seem to be the only Gilletts living in Lyme.
Smile lots!

Hi back at 'cha. I have sent your message on to my Gillett network. We are in contact with most branches for the family in those areas. We even have folks still living in Galesburg. So even though I do not have your Charles Fredrick in my smattering of information, there is hope that those REALLY into our family's history may. I do see folks from that time period in Knox Co, IL. You may already know that you can't throw an old shoe at our Gillett Family in Warren Co, Illinois without hitting a William or a Charles. So we will see what the Network comes up with.
Smile lots!

I would like to know what evidence for Loucinda Kelley being a Gillett, daughter of John and Jaly you have. I am working on this group of Gillett's and documentation is sometimes scarce on members. I am having to do lateral lines and other family groups to piece together a bigger picture. Any shortcut you have would be greatly appreciated.

Roswell came to Texas in 1827 with the family of Henry Smith, who was
married to his sister, Elizabeth. Henry was also married to Harriet Gillett until she died in 1820. He later married yet another Gillett sister when Elizabeth died. His family came from Kentucky to Missouri in 1820. His father Jonathan and mother Hannah Shackelford died in Missouri around 1827.
I am working on the family history beginning in 1790 and going to about 1870.
Roswell had either 8 or 9 brothers and sisters and we have a lot of info on each of them. It is an interesting family and every one was involved in early Texas history.
The most frustrating part is I can't trace father Jonathan back to Connecticut, where he came from. There are five different Gillett families there but making the connection to the right one has not yet been done. I do have a lot of stuff so if interested e-mail me

All of my family (the later generations) were in Illinois and Kansas. Before that, they had come from Pa. and NY. None of the names you gave tie in with any of my Gilletts, but they are probably linked if you go way back to the 1600's to when Jonathan, Nathan and Richard (I think the 3rd brother was Richard; Jonathan and Nathan are the more promiment ones mentioned) immigrated from England. Go on the Latter Day Saints web site and do some looking. That's where I found a lot of my info. My line is descended from Jonathan.
Robin

Hi Jacob. Ohhh, those Gilletts! Troublesome bunch it seems! My greatgrandfather, Lloyd, seems to have just taken off and left my ggmother and his 2 sons and married again. Ggmother Mamie did remarry (2 more times!) but I can't find any official records about a divorce or anything. Can't find out why he took off. I did find his and the second wife's grave sites in Ca. Can't find my grandfather, Eugene's burial place. Can't find anything on his brother, Otto. I've done better with the early generations than with the more recent! Now I don't remember exactly how I found it, but on the LDS site there is a library and in that I found a book about the Gillett family history. It listed a lot of the land records in Conn. Since my line were long gone out of Conn. by the early 1800s, I don't imagine we are too closely linked. But I will do some poking around since a couple of the 1700s generations had huge families. I'll put your query in my file and let you know if I come up with anything interesting.
Always smiling!
Robin

But considering I knew nothing of the Gilletts when I started; I'm pretty amazed that now I know all my ancestors all the back to their origins in France. I only wish I could be so successful with my other family names, McCullough (my dad's mom) and my mom's family the Bernards and Knitzels. Send me a list of the 10 childrens names; you never know what I might stumble on.
Robin

They had a son, Samuel (born 1677/78) who married Rebecca Bancroft(b. 1679/80) in about 1700 in CT. The line continues on down to my direct descendants. If you look at the Underwood/ Gilbertson family tree you'll see the other names. I'm quite new at this so I don't know if there were more children than Samuel or if this tree just shows him because he is in my line of Gilletts.
Hope this is of some use. So we must be distant relatives!
Robin Gillett

Hi Jake. I just finished reading thru all the posts in this thread; I didn't realize that William had all those children! I am descended from Jonathan. My problem lies with my more recent relatives (grandfather and great-grandfather) in that I can't find any death or buriel records for either of them. I'm also looking for info on my grandfather's older brother. There is a family tree, Underwood/ Gilbertson that has quite a bit of Gillett history in it (which is where I got a lot of my info from). I was able to trace it right down to my great-grandfather, Lloyd Merrit Gillett.
Just thought I'd pass this along to you; might be of some use.
Robin Gillett

Does anyone know of an Altig marrying a Bill Gillet or Gillett? The Altigs were from Cass Co., Iowa and Menard Co., Illinois. I have photos of a man and woman standing by a chair covered with animal pelts and one of a blond haired boy in a dark dress with large white lapels, tie and cuffs, his photo is a from Elwood, Nebraska studio. The woman is an unnamed sister to Marie Jane Altig Marvin (1861-1892). Marie lived in Marne, Iowa. My husband is related to the Altigs.

I am looking for a Pluma Mae Ward (NY) who married a Gillete and had two sons (that I am sure about), one whose name is Robert Charles Gillette (my father). I am trying to find out more about my grandmother Pluma and her husband (my grandfather). thanks.

I found the reference below in a story while researching my family tree. If the dates fit this might be the link to your Roswell Gillett.
"Joel Gillet was born on May 28, 1778 in Milford, Connecticut. He was the son of John and Comfort (Plumb) Gillet. Joel married Cloa Griswold in the late 1790s. Cloa was born October 11, 1779 in Burlington, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Jeremiah and Phoebe (Case) Griswold. Joel was a carpenter by trade, and also a shoemaker."
The next was in the list of thier children....
"3. Roswell was born about 1805 in Hector, Seneca County, New York. It was said that Roswell “went south and died.” Nothing else is known of Roswell."
I am a Gillett living in Texas as well...Christy Gillett

Hi Jake,

I'm tracing Gillett's in and around Warren County, IL, but am not sure how I fall into this.

My gg-grandfather was Charles Frederick Gillett, born 1867 in Galesburg, IL. He was living in Monmouth, Warren, IL at the time of his marriage to May Ulmer in 1894.

His parents were William Gillett (born 1849 in Ohio) and Francis Raymond (born 1850 in Illinois). They were married in Knox County, IL in 1867

It seems likely that they, and therefore I, must be part of this same family, but can you tell me how we tie in?
