Re: Gilliam Family of Franklin Co. TN

You can be sure that Harris Gilliam 1836 Franklin Co, TN is the son of Braddock and Mahala. I am thinking he must have been the "Black Sheep" from what I have been told about him and from what I have found in research. CAMP CO FAMILY HISTORY Camp Co, TX has an article submitted by his sister Catherin "Rhyna" Gilliam Courtney (married Lemuel Courtney) and she didn't even list Harris as a brother. You will find him living near Braddock and Mahala in Hopkins Co, TX in 1860. He is in the household of his brother in law Andrew Jackson Cochran with his wife Elizabeth Cochran Gilliam and 2 of their 3 children. My great grandpa, Francis Marion Gilliam wasn't born until right after Harris returned from the Civil War. 1866 Independence Co, AR. You will also find him in the household of Braddock and Mahala in 1840 census of Franklin Co, TN. That might be 1850 because I am doing this from memory. Harris was the eldest son and left TN before Braddock did. My grandfather told me he came into Independence Co with 2 Uncles one name Edward and one named Edmond. I am convinced that Edmond was a cousin and had a child born in Independenc or Lawrence Co before moving on to Ft. Smith, AR where he stayed and died. Reportedly, Edmond and family stopped off in Pope Co before moving on (about 75) miles to FT Smith. When I first started researching, I thought the Harris you found in Pope Co might be mine and married before Elizabeth Cochran but that wasn't the case as far as I know. Actuall it doesn't fit in with my information. I do know he married Elizabeth 1857 in Independence Co, he was in Hopkins Co, TX after that, he joined the 6 Mts Volunteers in Jacksonport, AR in July 1862, served in that capacity until being mustered out Bento Barracks, MO, then rejoined at Batesville, AR a short time later. He and Elizabeth both signed on her father John G Cochran estate sale in 1865 in Independence Co, AR and in 1867 they sold land owned jointly in Independence Co. He dissapeared after that and she lived the rest of her life in Independence Co. She died in the home of her son Francis Marion Gilliam in 1901 and is buried in Union Cemetery, Doudy,Independence, AR. I would suspect that is where her father is buried because it was the nearest cemetery to where they lived when he probably died (post 1865) but know one knows for sure.

Contact me at Jangill62@yahoo.com if you need to.

Re: Gilliam Family of Franklin Co. TN

I am very interested in Harris Gilliam, the son of Braddock and Mahala Gilliam. The reason is that I am seeking information on a Harris Gilliam who was in the home of Lucinda Gilliam on 1850 Pope County and Van Buren County census records in AR and I believe the two may be intertwined in records. Harris Gilliam appears to be Lucinda's son, born about 1832 in TN. That same Lucinda was in Independence County, AR, in 1860 but had married to a farm hand who was in her home in 1850 named Severs. She has several other children with her named Gilliam on all of these records, as well as young Severs children in 1860. I do not know the name of the Gilliam children's father, who seems to have died between 1840 and 1850 census records. I believe the Harris Gilliam in Lucinda Gilliam's home married a Syntha/Cyntha/Cynthia/Synthia Rackley in 1850. Cyntha appears very close to Lucinda in the 1860 census with the Gilliam children. The last was born in 1856. I read on Genforum that Harris Gilliam of Independence County married Elizabeth Cochran, and sure enough found a marriage record for 1857 in Independence County. However, I have read repeatedly that the Harris Gilliam who married Elizabeth Cochran was a son of Braddock and Mahala Gilliam. I cannot find the Harris Gilliam from Lucinda Gilliam's home in the 1860 census. I have read a lot online about Harris Gilliam, the Cochrans, etc. But, I have found nothing about the Harris Gilliam in Lucinda Gilliam's home and what happened to him. I cannot tell from the records I see that Harris Gilliam who married Cynthia Rackley (Pope County) is not the same Harris Gilliam who married Elizabeth Cochran in 1857. However, he appears to be Lucinda Gilliam's son if this is the case, and Lucinda was known to be in Pope, Van Buren, and Independence County based on census records. I would like to know anything about any Harris Gilliams who were believed to be in this area at the same time. Any records that would prove the Independence County Harris Gilliam who married Elizabeth Cochran was a son of Braddock and Mahala Gilliam would be greatly appreciated. I have contacted a decendant of Docia An (Dosha) Gilliam who appears to be Lucinda's dau and Harris' sister in the 1850 census records (same family appears on two seperate AR county records in 1850). She remembers and was aware of Severs/Sefers/Seffers relatives of her Grandmother, Dosha's Granddaughter. We are certain from what records reveal and from what this descendant recalls that the Severs were half-siblings to the Gilliams in question (Lucinda's children). I am descended from the Severs side of the family.

My great-great-grandfather was William Harris GILLIAM, b. 1817 Georgia, died 4 Feb 1887 Maxeys, GA. His wife was Lucinda FAMBROUGH.

William Harris Gilliam's father was William Gilliam. William was born in NC (possibly SC) and died in the early 1820s in Alabama. William Harris Gilliam had one drawing in the 1827 Georgia land lottery (successful). That property was in Troup County but it was rendered for taxation by Edward Harris (on behalf of WHG) in Oglethorpe Co, WHG being a minor.
William Gilliam's executor was a Mark Smith who was married to a Nancy Gilham but the estate file contains no other information.
WHG eventually was given land by Amy, Polly and Sarah HARRIS, daughters (and possibly widow) of Edward HARRIS who owned adjacent tracts as did his son Gilliam HARRIS.
Can anyone supply the connections between these Harrises and the Gilliams?

Look up the family of Abraham Childers, Childress.
I have not found documentation yet, but supposedly
John Gilliam married Susanna Childers, Sookie, and one
of their daughters married William Lewis.
This was in Washington Co. I will let you know if
I come up with anymore information.

Re: Gilliam Book by William Baker

I have chaced these Gilliams extensively. I know they are related but not quite certain exactly how. Edmond had to have been either a close cousin or maby an uncle to my Harris Gilliam born 1836 Franklin Co, TN. I found where Edmond came into AR via Lawrence Co. My family were in Independence CO which was taken off of Lawrence. My grandpa told me when Harris (his grandpa) came to the Cord area of Independence, he was with 2 uncles."One was Edward or Edmond". "No, I think there was an Edward and an Edmond" He went on to say one of them went on up into the Ozarks (FT Smith?) and he didn't know what happened to the other.

Any clue if any of those Gilliams wound up in Arkansas or Tennessee. I'm trying to find information on my grandfather, Robert James Gilliam. Born in the 1890's. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Barney Gilliam

Barney Gilliam was my uncle by marriage. He died in 1976. I know next to nothing about his family, so I'm afraid I can't be of assistance. His wife Bonnie died a few years back. They had an adopted daughter Sheila who, at least 10 years ago, lived in London, KY, but I doubt if she could/would be able to supply any info. about Barney's family. Barney's last brother died about a year ago, but his first name escapes me. There may still be an obit on line at the Tri-City News or Harlan Daily Enterprise.
