Matthew,
I don't know if I can be of any help to you but here is some info on some Gillilands, including mine.
Looks like there are several message boards with varying spelling of this name. I got lost trying to find the first one I posted on. Interesting. Every year around St. Patrick's Day I get Irish fever and since Samuel Gilliland and Martha (Dunwoody) are my only Irish ancestors I start trying to get more data on them. They were born in Ireland abt 1795 and 1823 respectively. They came to the U.S. between 1850 and 1860, I believe. I think they may have come in via Canada and they wound up in Franklin County, Vermont. They are buried there in Sanderson Corners Cemetery, Fairfax. I did find a Samuel Gilliland on the Castle Garden website who, along with, apparently his wife, Jane and several children arrived in NY on 21 Jul 1851 aboard the ship West Point. This Samuel was a weaver. I just offer this info for anyone else who may be looking for a Samuel. He is not my Samuel. I have found my Samuel in several censuses starting with 1860 where he is erroneously listed as Gillin.

Searching for Family

I am trying to continue my family history. I can only go back to my 5thG Grandfather, Killian Creek (Krieg, Grieg, Gerig, etc). I am trying to find his parents so that I can link back to Germany (his father).

The name Killian has been spelled Gillian, Gillien, Gilliam, Gilliom, Guillaume, Guillian, Guillien, Guillion, Guillan, and Guillen, among others. I am trying to find his mother my using his given name as her surname, as that was a common naming technique in the past.

The general conclusion is that Killian's parents MAY have been Rebecca and Jacob (John, Johannes, James). I have found record of a Jacob Krieg who came to Lancaster Co, PA on the Snow Louisa in 1752. I can't prove he's my 6th G Grandfather, however.

I believe that Killian's parents would have been born sometime between the late 1690's and 1730. Killian was born 1750 (either in Lancaster Co, PA or Germany).

If anyone has any information that might link with my search, I would greatly appreciate it. My email is: pretty_purple_polka_dot@yahoo.com

Thanks!

Desi

I'm replying two years after the date of this message. My family tree research has also wound its way back to this couple. One of my GG-grandmothers was an Ellen Gillian born in Oldham in 1824, whose marriage in 1842 was witnessed by a Sarah Gillian. This couple were the only possible candidates for her parents listed in Oldham, although their marriage date in 1801 seems a bit on the early side. At any rate, I have some Trade Directory Information for this period that relates to a William Gillian in Oldham. Get in touch if you'd like to have it - John
We are looking for information on a Sarah Jane Gillian, who married Rueben McGraw, a Civil War veteran, in the late 1800s. We think she may have been from Indiana or at least went there after their diviorce.
Rueben remarried in Meigs County OH and they raised the children he had with Sarah. Would like the names of Sarah's parents and would like to know what happened to Sarah.

Russ Blosser

Hello there,
My grandmother was a Gillen. Her grandfather was John Gillian who married Eliza Donnelly in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1854. I think that is Country Antrim, need to check.
After John served in the Civil War in the United States, his name somehow got changed to Gillen. His son's name was William John Gillen, who lived in Charlestown, MA. I suspect William John's grandfather was a William, too, but I'm still working on that.
Does any of this connect?

D
