Good day David,
I think my partner Helen must be related to you. She is descended from John McDonald who married Anne Gillies in 1841 - at the time they both lived at "Dunmore" near Morpeth. I assume Anne must be the daughter of Donald Gillies who I found listed as a family head from the Midlothian in 1837. I wonder if you know anything about this couple. Also, can you give me a lead to find a passenger list from the Midlothian in 1837?

Graham Patterson

Colin,Thanks for your information,I saw more than one Margaret Gillies, listed at Largo, some reseachers listed one dying at Collierley later named Dipton in May 1950. and born 1860...then I find a Margaret A> Gillies on the 1901 as a domestic aged24 with Joseph Dryden,Draper atElswick
Newcastle. possible daughter of above? Local registrar was
unable to locate her birth when trying via her age. our Dipton Gillies were tailors seems to connect with Dryden a draper, 20yrs on I shall keep trying, let you know, Jim Taylor

I am descended from Annabella Gillies of Applecross. I believe she married Peter McKenzie of Applecross and Plockton on 11 October 1846 at Barony, Lanark, Scotland, after which the two went to Canada. Annabelle and Peter lived in the area of Huron and Bruce Counties, Ontario, where Peter was a ship captain on the Great Lakes. He died in 1865 of unknown causes, she died in 1893. This Annabella is a sister of Anne, apparently, and five years younger than Anne. Annabella was born in 1826 whereas Anne was apparently born in 1821, as you have indicated. Both Peter McKenzie and Annabella (nee Gillies) are buried at Lochalsh Cemetery, Huron County, Ontario, Canada, where their family headstone indicates, "Capt. Peter McKenzie, 1820-1865, His Wife, Annabella Gillies, 1826-1893, Natives of Ross-shire, Scotland," along with some younger family members named.

According to an 1841 Scottish census, John Gillies had the following children, he being 65 at the time: Rodrick, age 30; Kenneth, 25; Anne, 20; Annabella, 15; John, 15 and Isabela, 22. John's wife is not mentioned on that census where he is listed as a farmer and boat carpenter.

I'm assuming I have the right info here and hope I haven't steered you wrong in any way. The names and dates, as well as family tradition seem right, so hopefully I'm on track.

HERMAN GARLEB
Lancaster, California, USA
mcatak@verizon.net

He was a soldier in the army and fought in WW2. He had a sister called Hannah Gillies who married a William Mclennon. Together, We had 4 children...Hannah, Frank, Elizabeth Christia (Tina) and Patricia. I am looking for anyone who knows of any of the names above and are possible relations.

Martin,

I have started a new Gillies search for a friend of my mother-in-law who goes to the same church. The information I have is:

John Cecil Gillies (believed to be born in Canada)
his son
Peter John Gillies - born 1969

I believe John's wife and Peter's mother is Carol Fay Severson.

Somewhere in the family record is an Ivadell (I believe to be Peter's grandmother and John's mother).

I believe John's father was born in Scotalnd and moved his family to Canada.

As I mentioned I have started this research.

Do any of these names sound familiar to you?

I can be reached at:

keith.pitner@sodexo.com (preferred) or
krentip@sbcglobal.net

KEith
Hi Nancy,

I'm sorry for not responding sooner, I either didn't get or didn't see the notice that you had posted a response. The problem with the people in Wester Ross is that they all had the same names! I don't know how they kept each other straight.

I will go back through my family notes to see if I have anything that may be of help. We did visit Lochcarron in 1999 and met some of my father's cousins a few times removed. There are a lot of Mackay's in the area. I know that the name Roderick isn't in my line, but I do remember seeing census records that included the name Roderick Mackay, I'll have to see if I have copies of any of those pages.

My grandfather and his brother didn't leave Scotland for the US until about 1900, so your ancestor imigrated earlier than mine did.

Thank you so much for sharing your information. It's very difficult for me to tell if a person I see listed in the census or OPR's available on-line is the one I'm looking for or not. I've been told the OPR's are incomplete and with census records, you don't always find the right record the first time you search. I don't think I've found the 1841 census record you mentioned but I'll look again. Perhaps your ancestor's sister Anne is the person I'm seeking. It will require some more research.

I really need to save up for another trip to Scotland where I can do some research in person. Unfortunately the one time I was there the genealogy bug hadn't yet bit me so I spent time looking at the buildings and scenery rather haunting record repositories.

Regards,
Sandy Mackay
Newburyport, MA
sandra.mackay@comcast.net

I have nothing about Anne Gillies, but I think you have information I need. My great grandfather was Donald Henry Mackay, son of Donald and Margaret Mackay (maiden name unknown). They had 5 sons, Donald Henry (b. 1807), Duncan, Neil, Roderick and John. They had 3 daughters, one named Annabelle. They owned the Strome Hotel until the 1830's. Donald Mackay sold it because he felt it was not a good place for his children. Donald Henry went to live in America in 1840. Duncan had a son Donald and daughter Mary. This information was in letters written in 1939 by Christina Mackay Mackenzie. Her daughter Mary Christina married a MacDonald. She named her son Colum. He lives in the USA.

Re: James Gillies, pastry baker, born Glasgow 1868 or 1856

Yes, could be. Thank you!! In the 1861 census`I found James Gillies with his mother Catrine and his father John, who also was a baker. I cannot find James or the family in the census`from 1871, but in 1891 I found James Gillies with his spouse named Margaret. Still living in Renfrewshire, and James`occupation is Pastry baker.....

I have problems following him any further, and to find information that proves that he is my great grandfather. I have searched in passenger lists, but maybee I have to find crew lists or information from the merchant navy.

James Gillies, pastry baker, born Glasgow 1868 or 1856

Iam looking for my great grandfather James Gillies. He was born in Glasgow. Some papers tell me that he was born 22. April 1868, his memorandums shows that he worked as a pastry baker 1881 Dundee, 1888-1889 in Ayr, 1892 in Glasgow. He emmigrated to Cape Town in 1893. I dont find him in the scottish census`with this birthdate, so it could be wrong.

Some other papers (seamans certificate) tell that he was born about 1856 (he also worked as a baker and confectioner on ships).
