Sue,

You say that the DAR said that Thomas 1790 is not the son of Alexander, and that Thomas 1763 was. Alexander only names one son Thomas in his 1795 will, and while Rebecca his second wife was born 26 Jan 1749 and dies June 29, 1837 she would be the mother of Thomas 1790. What information do you have that proves Thomas 1763 as Alexander James's son? What did the DAR say?
I have e-mailed Theresa and Linda Gamble on this, but I have been quite busy on other matters, and have been away from genealogy for awhile. Theresa is my cousin, and I do NOT think than Thomas 1763 ties to Alexander James. Glad to hear from you.

Paul M. Gilliland

Many years ago I heard about a group of Gillelands going down the river into Tennessee from North of Pittsburgh. They are related to the Hugh Gilleland clan of Allegheny & Butler counties, PA. It is said they built flatboats and took their belongings (including mom) along with them. At one point I thought perhaps they were descended from an Alexander Gilleland from Northern Virginia/Western PA. Could never find anything but one mention of this Alexander Gilleland in an Allegheny County History book--early settler of the area.

I am researching the Gilliland's in Tennessee. In 1850 he lived in Bradley County, Tennessee. Does anyone have a Martha Gilliland in Tennessee in 1800's ? If so, can you tell me anything about her? I believe she was probably born about 1822 to 1830.

I need help because I can't find her anywhere to verify that Gilliland was her maiden name.

Thank you.
Wanda

Hello

I am helping Teresa Pridmore with her lineage on the Gilliland line. DAR said that Thomas 1790 is not the son of Alexander. That Thomas 1763 did not miragrate out of North Carolina and he was a son of Alexander's. Could it be possible that Alexander had two sons by the name of Thomas, one from each marriage? Would like to hear your thoughts

Sue

Re: John Gilliland b. 1820 Ireland Migrated 2 US in mid 1800s??

Ann,
It is hard to know where to start, there is so much. Let's start with Jane Gilson, I have seen it both as Gilson and Gillson, even one of the marriage indexes has it as Gillson. My notes were from the Highland Co. Courthouse, but on checking I think Gillson could be a better choice. Why? The 1850 US Census shows BOTH John Gilliland (age 21) with a Jane (age 17) as wife. Also listed is an entry for Warren GILLSON (age 42) with his wife Sarah (age 41) and his family -- Jane (age 17) [so she may be double listed] her sister Mary (age 11) and a brother Marion (age 8) AND Thomas Rogers (age 73) --[Sarah's father] Thomas's Wife Deborah is not listed and presumed dead. This fits together well. Also on the 1830 Census there is a listing for a Warren M Gillson (20-30) next to a Samuel Gillson (50-60) [could be Warren's father] It makes sense. Jane's sister Mary later marries Samuel Sharp (b. Dec 1832) in Highland Co on 5 May 1859. The 1860 and 1870 Census list John Gilliland and Jane's family, including Louisa age 7 in 1870. Well this is a start, what access do you have to the US Census? I can just point then and save some typing. Hope this helps.
Paul

Ann,
I have checked this line in the US Census. I can find it in some detail, but your dates are about ten years off. Your letters may refer to a story about the early Gillilands coming to America in the early to mid 1700's. Once here in PA and NJ they moved west -- including Ohio. The same for the Chaney's. The John you ask about is John Gilliland born 25 Jul 1829 in Highland County, Ohio. Married Jun 18 1850 to Jane Gilson according to my notes taken at the Highland County Courthouse in 2005. John had nine children including Louisa Jane born 19 Oct 1863; she married Robert Leroy Chaney (b. 24 May 1861) in Iroquois Co. IL on 29 Apr 1883. The 1900 US Census lists Robert's date as May 1861; and Louisa's date as Oct 1863; then goes on to list a number of children and their dates. John Gilliland is listed on the 1870 census in Clinton County Ohio with seven children including Louisa age 7. Does this seem to fit with your line? There are several researchers who have quite a lot on this line, some pictures, some documents, and look to fit well into your line. It is on the internet, and I would be glad to point you to them. Good luck on your quest !
Paul

I am looking for any information on this family. Through family letters we have peiced together this so far.

John Gilliland b. 1820 Ireland
wife unknown
Children:
Louisa Jane b. 1854 Ireland (prevoiusly reported in OH)
Charles A. b. 1859 Ireland
Joesph M. b. 1864 Ireland
unnamed daughter b. pre 1854

They would have came over the US from Ireland between 1864 & 1883. It was said in the letters that his oldest child a daughter stayed behind because of a falling out with her father. After that they never talked about her again.

Louisa Jane m. Robert Chaney in Milford, IL 4/29/1883

My information came from letters written between Louisa's daughters in the 1930s,40s & 50s. My GGGrandmother & her sisters were trying to peice together all this themselves back then and the letters just now have resurfaced. All this new information does go against some prevouis information we had but this is the right information because of the sources.

I have been trying to determine if this Samuel Gilliland is the son of Richard Gilliland(dob 1765 dod 1838 Ripley County Indiana). Richard had two sons and this Samuel is about the right age to be Richard's son. This son showed in the 1820 census in Indiana, but then drops off the map and is not mentioned in Richard's will.

Thanks for the info. One of my distant cousins thinks Richard's Samuel died young, but he was in Ripley County, IN for the 1820 census. Actually, I don't know how she came up with the name Samuel, since no names are mentioned in any records I can find except Richard's will. I will have to keep looking. Thanks again.

William, I forgot to add that the 1900 Census mispelled Williams F Gillian as William F Killian (Line 79) along with the Kemp name which was Mispelled as Kamp & Kampe. Further down you will also find Mary Ann (Nichols) Gillian Kemp (Line 61) mispelled as Mary Ann Kampe. If you're unable to retrieve the census, send me your email and I'll forward it to you.
Yes, William and my Gr-Gr-GrandFather were half brothers. I have found a freat deal of info on Mary Ann Nichols, their Mother. She married Amos/Amons Kemp who raised William. You will see them on the 1900 & 1910 AL Census for Jefferson County. There are other relatives on there also. What is your lineage to William if you don't mind sharing?

Hello...

If your Gillilans were from Greenbrier County, WV then it is very likely they are of the line of James Gillilan, son of Nathan Gilliland of Augusta County, Virginia. The Greenbrier Historical Society has quite a bit of information on this line. If you could provide some dates, places, and names of spouses that would be most helpful, as the Gilliland/Gillilan families had a tradition of using the same given names over and over again.

Since Nathan's line is also my own, I'd like to invite you to Gilliland Trails at www.gillilandtrials.org I'm the owner/administrator for this Gilliland forum & library. One of our number, Matthew Gillian (yes, same family and descended from James) has written quite a bit about the line of James Gillilan and we have a some information about certain branches of that tree.

-- Kate Maynard

So this is not one of Richard's children. Good luck.

Paulg85

Re: Alexander and Rebecca McCollough/McColeth Gilliland m. 1789

Hi,
Rebecca had three small children when she married Alexander James Gilliland in abt. 1789. Youngest born abt. 1779; so McCullough's death occurred around 1780. Maiden name is still not known to date. Rebecca's dates are 1749 to 1837 and she is buried in the Bethel Presbyterian church cemetery. Frances Elizabeth Baird (my GGGG Grandmother) was born abt. 1743 and died in 1788 in North Carolina on the Gilliland Plantation. I see no problem in either death date or place. I have seen a death date of 1808 in Ohio which is entirely wrong and I have discounted it. I used to firmly believe there were two Alexanders and two Rebeccas but after careful research I now believe there is only ONE. Dates are 1737 to 1795. Earlier dates were used to tie Thomas 1763 to Alexander James Gilliland. It is an isolated case by a single person wanting to use Thomas 1763 as a son of Alexander James Gilliland. It does not fit. Alexander and Rebecca's son is Thomas 1790 as named in the will of 1795. This Thomas 1790 went to Kentucky and married in 1812. Hope this answers your problems.
Paul M Gilliland
