I am looking for any information about Rose after she and her husband (m. Windsor, Berkshire, UK, 1911), William Albert GILLINGHAM arrived in Canada. They arrived aboard the "Caronia" in October 1920, disembarking at Halifax, Nova Scotia.

If anyone has any information on this family it would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Grahame.

I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THE INFORMATION YOU GIVE!!! I hadnt actually reached the conclusion about Sidmouth, I just used the same title as the previous thread!!! How are you related to the Gillinghams? I have nothing else on Robert - only from Alfred Henry onward.

Hmm, tricky one! Robert and Catherine were married in Madras in 1867. There appear to have been 2 daughters, Maud M born 1872 in Rangoon and Victoria E born "at sea" in 1874. The births of all 3 children are listed in the Army section of the civil registers and their father's regiment is listed as "10th" - unfortunately no more details. On Alfred Henry's marriage certificate of 1890, Robert is described as Colour Sergent deceased. The 2 girls are on the 1881 census in Prittlewell, Essex described as Orphans, and both later went into service in London.

Speculatively, Robert the Colour Sergeant may be the Corporal in Aldershot on the 1861 census (Battery A, Royal Horse Artillery) born about 1839 Devonport, Devon. Either or both of these Roberts may also be the Robert born Dec 1841 in Bideford to Alfred Gillingham and Sarah Newman. I like this possibility as Robert named his eldest child Alfred.

From the message title it looks as if you have also reached this conclusion? I would be interested to know how you got there and whether you have anything further on any of the Roberts?

best wishes

Sian

I am trying to find information on Robert W. Gillingham, who was married in the 1950's to Theresa Ann. They had two daughters, born about 1949 and 1951 and lived in Colorado or Arizona. After they divorced around 1954, I believe Theresa moved to CA. We have lost contact with them.

Hi Sian,
Thank you very much for getting back to me I am very interested in getting to you because i have some confusing question that need answering my email is p.durrant1@ntlworld.com so that you can get back to me that way. John Durrant(1856)not sure where born but believed to be Stourton Caundle Somerset and by the Family Search site he also lived in Jersey as a (British Subject),is my gggrandfather, but from him in my tree i go straight to his father which is
Samuel Durrant(1795)&Charlotte loder(1797)who had 13 kids,So that is one of the problems that i have it dont seem to line up perhaps that is one you could help with for now.I have also been told that the Durrants came across from Normandy but I am to sure of that one,and also that the U in Durrants name has two dots above it yet again i am not sure this is all new to me but i am willing to learn.I would like to give you my phone No 01202 677704 so that you could call me if you what to I also have a tree in
Genes Reunited called William Ewart Durrant Family Tree you are qutie welcome to look at that. From my side of the Durrants I have one uncle who Ithink is still alive and he lives in reading Basingstoke.I also had an email from a
Philip Brown who says that John Durrant married a
Georgina Ella Shepherd in 1885 in Wincanton, a year after his first wife Mary died. And that William Ewart Durrant married Clara Morris on the 14th July 1914 in Basingstoke,Hampshire.and that is where my side of the family come from hope this is helpful and cant wait to see if you can correct my any of my tree or add to it awaiting your reply Bill Durrant (Granson).

Hi Bill

I have a little information that may help you. Mary Gillingham was the daughter of Benajmin Gillingham and Sarah Brown of Buckland Newton. She was baptised there 18 April 1802 and married John Durrant there 3 July 1821.

Benjamin Gillingham descends from the marriage of John Gillingham to Mary Wakely at Corfe Castle 6 Dec 1756. They baptised 7 children in Corfe Castle and Buckland Newton. I can provide further details if you contact me directly. I don't know where John originated as there are numerous candidates.

The known children of John and Mary Durrant were Eliza bapt 1822, Ann 1824, Elizabeth Ann 1824, Sarah 1826, John 1828, Lavinia 1832, Rosanna 1834 and Mary 1835. I have more information on this family that was provided to me by another descendant of this marriage but by a different line to yours I think. If you like to contact me directly then I can pass it on - there is too much for a message board.

I looked at your tree on ancestry but I cannot see how John born c 1857 in Jersey who married Georgina Shepherd descends from John and Mary nee Gillingham. However, the connection with Buckland Newton suggests that this is the same family.

Hope this is helpful to you. Look forward to hearing from you.

Sian

Hi! I think our geneology intersects. My grandmother Wanda Gillingham Dillon who was raised in Bay Port/ around North Island was the daughter of Robert Louis Gillingham and Viola Tracy( Kinde). Roberts parents were Charles Josiah Gillingham and Nancy Edgar. I have dates and records for this couple from my dad, dating back to the mid-1700's in England. Please write back and we can exchange our info.

Hi Stephen

We are 5th cousins, sharing a common ancestor Richard Gillingham born in Folke Dorset in 1752. Our line goes back to a marriage in Lydlinch, Dorset in about 1570. You will delighted to know that your grandfather was absolutely right, his own father was born in Holwell, Dorset, married in London in 1892 and then moved to Derbyshire. He is also right about the horses, the Richard mentioned above was a blacksmith and my line continued in this trade through to at least the 1950s.

I can send you further details if you like to get in touch at gillingham@one-name.org

Look forward to hearing from you

Sian

I am assuming you are referring to Henry Legg who married Mary Gillingham in 1830? I contacted Dale back in 2001 and below is a transcript of the note referring to Henry J Gillingham. If your interest is with the Gillinghams rather than the Leggs then I have further details of this family - please let me know.

kind regards

Sian

September 3rd 1869

The uncertainty of life has been again demonstrated in
this city. Mr. Henry J. Gillingham, of the High
Street, statuary and mason, who formerly represented
the Ward of St. Maurice in the Town Council, rose at
an early hour (five o'clock) on Monday morning, and
whilst in the act of dressing was heard by his
daughter, Miss E.E. Gillingham, moaning. She went into
his bedroom, when her father, who was brushing his
hair, complained of pains in his chest. After dinner,
on the previous day, he had made a similar complaint,
but felt better after taking some stimulant, and
retired to rest, with Mrs. Gillingham, about nine
o'clock. Up till then Mr. Gillingham had enjoyed very
good health. Immediately after making the complaint to
his daughter the brush fell from his hand, and he
would have fallen, too, had not Miss Gillingham caught
him, and laid him on the floor, and she then fetched
her brother. Dr. Wickham was at once summoned, and
promptly attended, but it was of no avail, as Mr.
Gillingham had been dead some minutes. It was the
doctor's opinion, after examining the body, that death
resulted from a diseased heart. An inquest was held on
the body by Mr. J.H. Todd, at St. John's Tavern, the
same day, when the jury, after hearing the evidence,
returned a verdict in accordance with the above
statement, namely, that death was the result of
"Natural Causes". Deceased, who had attained the age
of 64 years, was an old inhabitant, and highly
respected by his brother tradesmen and numerous
friends and acquaintances in this city.

Hi there

Robert L Gillingham was born about 1870 in Michigan the son of Charles Josiah Gillingham and Nancy Edgar. He had 4 older brothers. Charles Josiah's birthplace is variously given as New York, Vermont and Hatland Co Michigan anywhere between 1828 and 1835 but was probably Michigan and probably nearer 1828. Nancy was born Ireland, Michigan, New York or Vermont 1824-1832.

Charles Josiah was the eldest of 5 children of John and Elizabeth Gillingham of Hartland Co, Michigan. John is said to have arrived at New York from England around 1810 with a brother (unnamed) and then moved to Michigan (this from Robert Charles Gillingham's book). He was born between 1790 and 1807 in England. Elizabeth was born Beaumont, Co Michigan 1810.

If you would like further details of the family please contact me off list and I'll be happy to send you a report.

best wishes

Sian

Hi Shannon

I have just found some information on your Elizabeth Gillingham - given that it is 2 years since you posted the query you may well know this by now, but just in case.

Elizabeth was the daughter of George Joseph Gillingham and Elizabeth Abbot Anderson. She was baptised on 17 Feb 1820 at St Dunstan's, Stepney, London. I have just obtained a copy of her marriage certificate which gives her father's name. I then found Elizabeth and George William Brown on the 1871 census which clearly shows age and birth place - I wonder if "Middlesex" got transcribed as "Exeter"?

anyway, hope this helps

Sian

As far as books go there were several written on the Gillingham family and you can find them on antique book sites occasionally. Try Abebooks.com.

If you will send me an address I will send you some information. I looked in by data base and I do not have anything on Elizabeth Bradshaw other than she married to George Hayward. Two children George Hayward (1880) Married to Mary G(thats all I have) and Carl Gross (1883) Married to Mathilda Tappeiner.

I would be interested in getting the information on your husbands family.

Allan Gillingham
Gilbert, AZ
Highpockets34@cox.net

Stephen:
I am Allan Dean Gillingham (1934). The U.S. Gillingham's started with Yeamans Gillingham who came to Pennsylvania in the 1685-1690 time frame with the other Quakers who settled Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Gillingham's then migrated to Ohio and then to Wisconsin in 1851. I grewup in a farming community in Wisconsin and my Grandfather had a general store that he started there in 1895. When he got the postoffice the area was called "Gillingham". I see that Sian Plant contacted you, that is a great resource for information.
Allan Dean Gillingham

A question of documentation has arisen -we are unable to document that Grace Gillinham and Moses Wright are in fact the parents of Aaron and Moses. What are your sources or what do you have that links Grace Gillinham and Moses as parents to Aaron and Moses? Wish I could give you more info on the Gillinham line. I know how frustrating it can be.
Jerry Maye Wright-Mueller

Hester/Esther is buried in an unmarked grave in Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack, NY. She died in the 1870s. Thank you.

I am trying to find out info about my mothers family however there seems to be quite a few Robert Gillingham's. My family has told the story of how the Gillingham family came to america from england and settled on North island and Charity Island in saginaw bay. However I can only find information back to Robert L. Gillingham and his wife Viola. We do have records of the settling and ownership of the island, however I still cant track down who the first to arrive were. If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated. I also know there is some relation to the last name Edgar, how I am not sure, I only know this because my Grandmother Nancy Edgar Gillingham was named after a Nancy Edgar whom was related to the Gillingham family.

Hello Pat

I am married into the Sparling lineage and just found an Isaac Sparling who was born in NY in about 1822. He was married to Venetia who was born in Pa in about 1823. In the 1850 Tioga Pa. census they had:V.E. age 5 a girl born in Pa
George W age 3 born in Pa David I age 2 months born in Pa.

Do you know anything about the parents of Isaac?
My husbands grandfather is Harold Isaac Sparling.
Thank you,
Diane

Re: Any Gillinghams hail from Stourton Caundle Dorset c1800 - 1900?

Right this is spooky, I am a Gillingham from the county of Derbyshire in England, before my beloved Grandad Charles Alfred Gillingham 1896-1979 (the given name seems to be a tradition my brother is know as Charles, even though he prefers Raymond) passed away we got to talking and he told me the family came from down south, my Dad Alan Gillingham 1936- poopooed this idea as one of Grandads stories, however it stuck with me and you know when and itch will not go away, any way I did some digging and my Greatgrand Charles Albert Gillingham passed away in the 1940s, he was in eightys his birth place is given as Dorset a place called Stourton Caundle, now do you see how this is so spooky, my greatgrand came to Derbyshire to work on the estate of the Earls of Hartington at Elvaston Castle( Im sorry the dates have been lost in the mists of time but Grandad had an older brother and an older sister so it pushes the date for the Gillinghams arriving in Derbyshire back to at least 1870ish), my Grandad his two brothers and sister were all born at Elavston, in fact as my Dad told me last year his uncle Tom had only just passed away at the grand old age of 94, if this helps Grandad said the family were always horse men, farmers and bakers. I hope this fills in a gap or two, it is rare that I get back to the UK as I work and live in China but it would be great to hear from fellow Gillinghams, I beleive we have a very strong branch ot the family in the USA

So far I've traced my direct ancestors back to a very small Dorset village called Stourton Caundle - it seemed a most melancholy place when I visited it in Autumn 2005, but bizarrely, something about it did rather stir my soul!

My grandfather, Frank Thomas Gillingham, and his 2 elder brothers, James (possibly Richard or Charles James?), and William Charles were all born there in the 1870s, as was their father Charles Gillingham c1841.

Does anyone have any information about what happened to these elder brothers? In the 1891 census they both are listed in Glamorgan, Wales, but beyond that nothing!

Thank you very much for the information. James's approximate birth year is 1834 in Ireland. It appears that Mary's family is actually in MA, USA then traces back to Ireland or Scotland. James came to New York aboard the Kate Hudson in March 1850. The manifest has him listed as 16 years old and I did not see any family with him.

Thank you again for your help!

His wife is Mary E born in New York with parents from Ireland.

He has a daughter named Grace Gillingham and a son I believe James as well.
Any info you can provide would be greatly apreciated
