Gillis - Tyrone to New Zealand

Hi guys

I have Eleanor Gillis marrying Andrew Wall in Dungannon, Tyrone in 11 Jul 1837.

I have Eleanor leaving Ireland with her 5 son's on the Black Eagle arriving in Auckland NZ Nov 1861. I believe her husband Andrew died in 1847.

I have since discovered that they were heading to NZ on request from Eleanor's BROTHER John Gillis - he was established in NZ by the looks of things with a farm etc. & MAY have some legal knowledge - I have a court hearing where he is representing his nephew over a pay dispute.

Anyway I have recently found a marriage of JOHN's daughter Sarah Jane Gillis in NZ to a Robert Fleming - it mentions John was from Dromore, Tyrone. I THINK I have also found Sarah Jane Gillis on the LDS website for her birth listing John as her father - for her birth it says 18 NOV 1838 Arboe, Tyrone, Ireland.

So yeah - I'm looking for info on this Gillis family from the Dromore, Arboe, Tyrone area. It list's Sarah Janes mother as Jane (John Gillis wife).

An info would be great as I'm stuck on this generation!

Cheers
Anihana

My mama is now 90 years old and I know that she would love to see Elva because she talks about all her relatives all the time. My mama lives in Axson. My uncle is John Spivey, so he must have got his name from Papa George's dad. I never got to meet Papa George cause he died before I was born. Thanks for keeping in touch. My granny still lives in Douglas. She has just been diagnosed with cancer. Please keep her in your prayers.

Joseph Gillis is the father of Lester Gillis, AKA Baby Face Nelson. In fact, this Friday, 9/4/09, I plan to go to St. Joseph Cemetery where Joseph Gillis is buried. You can contact me at my email (kathy@glowacz.info) and I can forward what information I have.

Thank you for your reply. I would like to learn more about my grandfather, Joseph Gillis. The only real information I have is he met my grandmother in the village of Maret in Belgium where he was visiting and needed someone who could speak both French and English. The exact years are not clear but it had to be in the late 1880s or early 1990s. She later went to Chicago to visit him and stayed there and became his wife. They had 6 children. Their daughter, my mother was born in 1903 and married Robert Fitzsimmons in 1921. Grandfather Joseph died in 1924. I was the last of eight children and was not born until 1944. I never learned much about his family before he married my grandmother. If this Joseph Gillis is your great uncle, I would be interested in knowing more about him and the rest of his family.

Sincerely, James Fitzsimmons

The Angus Gillis I'm familiar with came to Colorado from Nova Scotia around the 1800's or mid to late 1800's. I didn't realize this name is like Smith. I am however, related the person you replied to about March & April in this site. Aren't you the one who said your Angus Gillis remained in Nova Scotia?

Angus Gillis,s one son John Gillies. Sorry for spelling John,s last name Gillies and not Gillis, but John changed his last name in Ontario when he and his Kids moved there beside one other Gillis family. I think you mite be related to John's older brother Donald whom had an son named after there father Angus. As far as I know Donalds one son moved to Colorado, but for the time line when I do not know. The Angus Gillis I am look for was born 1760 Loch Arkieg Scotland and came to Nova Scotia in 1802 on the Dove. If you are related to my Angus Gillis I would like to share info with you.

Lawrence Gillis

Some researchers have listed several of the earliest Gillis settlers at PEI together as a family unit with Angus as the father Sarah MacPherson as the mother. Earlier versions had them possibly arriving at N.S. on the Dove, etc., etc. Regardless, I don't know that this family unit is confirmed to a valid source, so was a bit curious about your Angus and the child Donald.

I have a set of gr gr gr grandparents in the form of Donald Gillies and Elisabeth MacNeill, with spelling variations of course.

Donald is said to be of the Isle of Barra, yet no arrival or ship list connections can be proven. He and Elizabeth were baptising babies at PEI (Rustico and Miscouche areas)from about 1814 onward. The earliest child I know of was born in 1810 making them born about 1790 - 1795 or earlier.

If you are familiar with any source showing migrations from Scotland to Nova Scotia, then PEI, I would appreicate that very much.

Regards,

Dawna

Angus Gillis as far as I know live the rest of his life in Nova Scotia and the same for Donald Gillis. Donald was Born in 1780 in Loch Arkaig, along with his younger brother John whom is my gr,gr,gr,gr,gr, Grandfather. As far for Donald he married Nancy Ann McMillian also born in Scotland. The McMillians and Gillis family are said to have lived beside each other in Hawthorn Nova Scotis. I have read some posts that Donald Gillis family still lives there today. Angus wife is listed as Mary McMaster, they had 5 kides Janet, Ann Mary, Donald And John. They Came out of Scotland to Nova Scotia on the Dove in 1801. The best soures that I found is LDS Files. I am sorry that I can be more of help to you but if I come across a Sarah MacPherson with a Angus Gillis and Son Donald I will pass it on to you.

Lawrence

Thanks for the information! I, too, have run into some walls. My gg-grandfather, Archibald Gillis (1 Aug 1814 - 7 Dec 1880), was born in NC according to family history and all the censuses I found him in (staring in 1840 through 1880 all in Winston County, MS including the 1853 MS census). I've found Gillis' in NC that may be him and family but aren't sure. Do you have anything that might place him? parents? siblings? I have tons of stuff as far as descendants go, if you need any of that.

Thanks again,
John Gillis

Hi,
I sent you an email directly to hotmail but just in case you didn't get it... My husbands great, great, great grandfather was Roderick Gillis(1794-1869). He settled in Irish Cove, Cape Breton in 1817. His parents were James and Catherine Gillis, both from Scotland. He arrived aboard the ship William Fell. He married Anna and had 2 daughters, Ann (later Mrs Michael MacDonald) and Catherine (Mrs Stephen McLain). Roderick also had a brother John and they apparently had property close to one another. I have an extensive family tree if that would be of any help...I am not sure if James is the same...what do you think? Natalie Gillis

Bigjohn 56: You can buy Clayton Metcalf's book,"The Gillis Family in the South" at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~alprhgs/
I believe the cost is still $20.50.
It is listed almost at the bottom of the page under;
ONLINE PRICE LIST OF PUBLICATIONS FOR SALE
which are being offered here online

The book has doubled in price since I bought my copy from Clayton in 1974. lol Bet he'd be pleased to know someone is trying to sell it for $235. used.
You can email me at vanneh@bellsouth.net I have researched the NC gilies for over 35/40 years. Still hitting brick walls.
