My mother, Janet Schramm, is the middle daughter of Oval and Rose Gillison. As you know, Oval was Tom's brother. Oval, Rose and both of their sons, Eddie and Billy, have passed away, as did Billy's only son, Little Eddie. There are no surviving male Gillisons through Oval and Rose. My mom would like to make contact with you. I've found it impossible to track backward from Great-Grandpa Murray and Great-Grandma Maude. I actually went to Indianapolis, IN a few years ago to track through the archives for ANY records. Grandpa Oval's birth certificate shows he was born in Indiana, but there were no records, whatsoever, on the Gillison family. Mom said her Grandma Maude said the famly was a mix of French, German, and Irish. Research I've done shows Gillison name is Scottish in origin. Mom also said that my Great-Grandpa and Great-Grandma Gillison, Murray and Maude, moved to E. St. Louis before Oval and Rose met.

It is interesting. I started this "thread" back in 2000 or 2002. It has come this far and I still don't have an answer to my original question. Seems like the question has gone all around Robin Hood's barn and back again.
My husband's mother was Julia Gillison, born in Beaufort, SC in 1899 of William Gillison (had a brother Thomas). Julia's mother was named Margaret Mulligan. Julia Gillison married John Frank Martin some time in 1930 in Savannah, GA. They are now deceased.
As everyone has probably gathered having Gillison problems.Cannot get the son to match the father. On all the censuses I have a James Gillison Marriage Certificate with his age etc, I have so far got 2 wrong birth certificates as the fathers not stating the correct name with me so far - deep breath - James born around 1860 father on marriage cert. states Thomas his occupation - moulder. The only james I have left on the 1837 site around this time is a John James Gillison and according to LDS site father as Thomas mother Elizabeth. I have a question is it possible for someone to state on certificates etc by their 2nd name but infact they are not born that name - do you folks understand what I am trying to say!!. On the family History Site last night I found a Thos. Gillison during 1851 no age etc but hey it stated he was a moulder Piece No & Part 2179/1 Folio 0130a Reg. Dist. 461/3 Can anyone tell me any more info on this Thomas Please.

I am now going to have another sip of the old well good stuff - night night - regards Jeanette

Hello Louise-

I believe you would be my 3rd cousin, if you are Gladys' granddaughter.

I am the eldest of Janet (Gillison) Schramm's children. Wanted to update some of the information you have on your message.

Virgil (Bud) passed away in June 1970.

My Uncle Eddie, Rose and Oval's eldest child, passed away in March 2002. (We miss him terribly!)

Bill Cornwall was a cousin (either 1st or 2nd) to Grandma Rose.

Billy Gillison's son, Eddie, passed away April 19,1993, as a result of a car wreck.

Thanks a bunch for the info you provided. I have made a trip to Indiana to find out information regarding Great Grandparents Murray and Maude Gillison, but had no luck.

Take care!
-Dawn

Hello, Terry!

My mother is Janet and, of course, my aunts are Sharon and Barbara. A lot of the specific history I was able to learn from Grandma Rose before she passed away, so I was very lucky!

Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of a move from an apartment to a house and so I don't have access to the specific family history right now. I am very anxious to get back to work on my family's history.

I did visit Indiana some time ago and couldn't find anything in the archives as far as birth or death records regarding the Gillison family.

Have you been able to find out very much new information from posting a message on this website?

-Dawn

Terry-

My grandfather was Oval Gillison, born in Indiana in 1902. He had several brothers and sisters who primarily lived in the Missouri and Illinois areas.

His father (my great grandfather), Crate Gillison was born in Kentucky and I'm not quite certain of the year.

Oval Gillison moved to Illinois and married a German lady named Rose (aka Rosa). Oval and his family moved back and forth between Illinois and Missouri for many years.

During their lives, Oval and Rose had 5 children (2 boys and 3 girls). Both of my uncles have passed away in recent years. One uncle, Charles, served in the military and finally retired in Missouri. My other uncle, Bill, resided in Illinois.

This is, basically, how my family of Gillisons came to be from many of the states you named.

Hope this helps!

-Dawn

You wrote me and I don't remember if I wrote you back or not. The Gillison in our family are from Beaufort, SC. Our set of Gillison's were African-American with a whole lot of McGillicuty, Fogarty, etc., and my maiden name of Cook in their history. The Martin in our family is from Savannah, GA. However, on my side, the Cooks' went from South Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri in the early 1800's. However, on my husband's side, John F Martin (from Savannah) mother was Julia Gillison from Beaufort and the father was also John F Martin. What stories have you to tell me?

From what John is telling me about the Gillison's in South Carolina, is that they are all related at some point. It seems the Martins and Gillison's have known each other for a very long time. John's father had uncles and grandfathers that all had brothers. Even though John's mother, Julia Gillison was an only child in the early 1900's, she had a father and grandfather who all had brothers and sisters. What I'm thinking is that our connections could be with someone in the family a bit removed from our direct line. Your Gillison and Martin could be brothers, sisters, of our Gillison-Martin connections. There was at least two William Gillison's, one of whom remarried twice. Don't you think it would be worth a try to find out?

Linda Bradshaw Glass and I are still looking for the burial place of John Y. Bradshaw and his second wife, Roxanna Gillison Monroe. Roxanna is the sister of John's first wife, Laviney Gillison (Woods?). According to a Bradshaw researcher, Diana Pankonin, John and Roxanna were admitted to the Kenesaw Methodist Church on 25 Nov 1888 and dismissed March 1890.
One of John's sons is John Gillison Bradshaw, from the first marriage to Loviney. In John G. Bradshaw's bible, there is a reference in his handwriting to the death of John Y. Bradshaw.
It says: "John Y. Bradshaw died 22 March 1891". Does ANYONE have any information that might lead all of us who are working on this family to find the burial place of John Y. Bradshaw and his second wife, Roxanna???? After much research in Nebraska on Linda Bradshaw Glass's part, and help from some of you other descendants, we are still looking
for that all important burial place. We appreciate any help that anyone can give us. Thanks, Loline Bradshaw Carter
