I am a direct descendant of Sarah Gilman, daughter of Edward Gilman 1587 of Hingham, Norfolk, Eng who married Mary Clark in 1614. Sarah of above married John Leavitt and were the first immigrants to America in the 1600's. Edward and Mary Clark Gilman also arrived in Massachusetts and are buried there. I do not have Robert Edward Gyllman's wife's last name, her first name was Mary and they were married around 1579.

Re: Mahala Gilman of Henrico Co VA

Well, I at least think I do. It all fits, but I could be wrong. Georgiana married a man named John Ford. They are buried in Hollywood Cemetery which is in Richmond,VA. In their lot (which is section B lot 69), 17 people are buried. Two are them, I know at least one is their child who died when she was 4 (I have the obituary), and there are many little(ages 0-2) Fords. Anyways, a person in this lot is named Mary J. Gilman who died in Oct 1856 being age 46. I cross checked the 1850 census for a Mary J. Gilman who would be living around Richmond and I found a Mary J. Gilman who was married to a Dudley Gilman (who had a Georgiana and a Mahala in the household) The dates for Mary J. Gilman are a little off, but that is normal with census records. I then used Familysearch.org to look for a Dudley Gilman and got this:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/AF/family_group_recor...

I also found somewhere else that in the Henrico Marriage Bonds has a Dudley Gilman who married a Mary Jane Brown on Dec 20 1831. In these records is also a Dudley Gilman who married a Polly Ford in 1799 (when he was 13) and a Mahaly Tharp in 1809. I would assume then that Dudley's child was Dudley who named one of his daughters after his mother. So there you have it. I have tried to put these pieces together, and in my mind it makes sense; however, like I said before I could be jumping to conclusions. -Michael
Mary GILMAN - wife of Nicholas JACOB: Matrilineal Descendants Wanted

For more than a decade, I have been developing the theory that my great-great-great-great-grandmother, Dorothy (DYER) MINER, lastly of Greenwood, Steuben County, New York, was probably a daughter of James and Dorothy (WHITMARSH) DYER, originally of Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts and lastly of Plainfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. For more information, please see…

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~streeter/d...

Unfortunately, conventional research has not yet yielded “the proof” to confirm this placement. However, definitive proof that Dorothy (DYER) MINER was the daughter of James and Dorothy (WHITMARSH) DYER could be obtained by comparing the Mitochondrial DNA of her living matrilineal descendants with the Mitochondrial DNA of living matrilineal descendants of Dorothy’s probable matrilineal ancestors:

Mary (GILMAN) (JACOB) (FOULSHAM/FOLSOM) BEAL/BEALES , wife of Nicholas-1 JACOB
|
Deborah (JACOB) THOMAS, wife of Nathaniel-3 THOMAS Jr. (Nathaniel-2 Sr., William-1)
|
Mary (THOMAS) (GARDNER) Goold, wife of Rev. James-1 GARDNER
|
Dorothy (GARDNER) WHITMARSH, wife of Ezra-4 WHITMARSH (Ezra-3, John-2-1)
|
Dorothy (WHITMARSH) DYER, wife of James-5 DYER (Joseph-4, William-3, Christopher-2, William-1)

If you have a well-documented and unbroken *matrilineal* (“umbilical”) line of descent from any of the women shown in this lineage, please contact me privately at perry@streeter.com, without fear of any further obligation. Mitochondrial DNA is only passed from mothers to their children so the only male that can exist in a line of descent for the purposes of this comparison must be the last living link in the chain. This situation is essentially the opposite of surname-based DNA projects which are based on the fact that the Y-Chromosome and the DNA it carries is only passed from fathers to sons; for more information on this topic please see…

http://www.familytreedna.com/inheritance-chart.aspx

A DNA-based approach to confirming that Dorothy (DYER) MINER was the daughter of James and Dorothy (WHITMARSH) DYER may sound far-fetched to some readers but that is exactly how Mike Morrissey and I confirmed the origins of another one of my “grandmothers.” The first-of-its-kind article that resulted was published in New Netherland Connections as:

Perry Streeter and Mike Morrissey, “Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) Testing of Probable Eighth Cousins Confirms Their Kinship and Proves Their Matrilineal Lines of Descent from Aeltje Cornelis (COOL) (VAN COUWENHOVEN) STOOTHOFF; Simultaneously Proving Two Long-Held Theories Developed Sequentially Through Conventional Research; Mary (UPDIKE) RICHEY of Greenwood, Steuben County, New York Was a Heretofore Unidentified Daughter of Roliph-5 UPDIKE (John-4, Lawrence-3, Johannes-2, Louris-1 Jansen); Eleanor5 "Nelly" LANE (Gizebert-4, Mathias-3, Gysbrecht-2 Laenen, Matthys-1 Jansen) Was the Heretofore Unidentified Wife of Roliph-5 UPDIKE” (April, May, June 2005; Volume 10, Number 2).

To read a version of this article, please see…

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~streeter/N...

Some living matrilineal descendants of Mary (GILMAN) (JACOB) (FOULSHAM/FOLSOM) BEAL/BEALES might be interested in scientifically confirming their descent from her because she was also the ancestor of Presidents George Herbert Walker BUSH and George Walker BUSH and an aunt of Presidents Abraham LINCOLN and Gerald FORD:

home.comcast.net/~pammysueb/DOCUMENTS/GILMAN_Pres.pdf

Thanks for your help!

Perry

Perry Streeter (perry@streeter.com)
www.perry.streeter.com

I'd be happy to share what I have! I haven't been able to break down the brick wall on either of these two, but I may have things about them and their kids that you don't - and vice versa.

My husband also descends from Eri, through William.

Why don't you email me at swimminginpaper(at)yahoo.com - I'd love to chat.

I'm the son of Rex Gilman and looking for additional information as well. Would very much like to hear from you. Thank you, Gary Gilman.

Re: Frederick GILMAN

I think this Frederick would be the son of James Gilman (1851) my great uncle. James was born in Denton, Lancs, where his father William was working as an agricultural labourer.
