Hello Jennifer,
Thank you so much for your email about GEORGE GILMORE my second cousin. Sorry I haven't got back to you sooner but I have been away then not too well.
I would love to know more about GEORGE, I met him a couple of times when I was very young, but living at the time in the UK, we didn't see a lot of our relatives.
You wouldn't happen to have a photo of him that you could attach to my email which is disce50@clara.co.uk as I don't remember what he looked like. I remember more of his aunts my Great Aunts 2 of who lived in Hillside Terrace, (Now Thornmanby Road ) Aunt Ollie (Olive) and Hatty, (Harriett)Angus. who ran a little tea shop in Howth. My Dad Georges Cousin was born and brought up in Howth.
Please get back to me.
There is a gentleman in Dublin who I believe has a lot of Georges papers and belongings and is going to put them in Dublin Museum at some stage. I would dearly love to see some of them.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Heather,
Worthing,West Sussex,UK

And I know the names of most of their, his and Martha Ann Gilmer-Portwood's children which included my grandmother, (Katherine Elizabeth Portwood-Hooper) most of her siblings, John Van, Newton, Ridings, Eugene and Lucile.

Yes, we are talking about the same man. He was the son of Thomas Gilmore who was killed in July 1763 during the 2nd Indian attack on Kerr's creek, and grandson of John and Agness Gilmore, who were killed on 19 Oct 1759 during the 1st attack.

Known as Indian John by some early researchers, the name was not as fitting as reported. John was captured in July 1763 and reported as released by the Shawnee Indians in a military record of 15 Nov 1764; his mother was released the following Jan. For info re. some of the many historical sources about the captives from Kerr's Creek, see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~qvarizona/...

I'd be very happy to exchange info. either here or by email
at qvarizona@yahoo.com

--Joanne

If your g-grandfather was 80+ yrs when he passed, it is a possibility that he was the brother of my g-grandfather William Thomas Portwood. I find in my research of Micajah Campbell Portwood & Katy Foust, that their 3rd child was Micajah Campbell Portwood, b.22Feb1850 in Anderson Co. TN.
This would have been three generations of men with this name. If this isn't your g-granddad, thanks for replying with me to figure this out. If you think it might be, then I have a little more info for you. Happy hunting. ~Ronda

My great grandfather Micajah Campbell Portwood, passed away in the 1930's and is burried in a Nashville TN Cemetary. I don't think we are referring to the same person, wheter or not he was married more than once, one thin I am sure of, his wife that mothered my grandmother, her name was Martha Ann Gilmer (married to M.C Portwood), of whom is my grandmothers mother and he, her father.

My great grand father was James Gilmore who came from Leitra near Glenamaddy in County Galway, he moved to Brickens in Co Mayo circa 1838 and then ran a Corn Mill on the local river in the village. He first married an Ellen Ruane and had 5 children, when she passed he married a Brigid Fahey and had 7 more children, one of whom was my grand father Patrick Gilmore. My father was Joe(PJ)Gilmore. I would love to hear from any relations who are connected to the Gilmore's of Brickens, Co Mayo.

I have 2 Micajah Campbell Portwoods in my family tree. My g-g-grandfather B: 24Mar1820 was married to Katherine "Katy" Foust B: 18Dec1825. My g-g-g-grandfather was married to Phebe Adkins. His parents were Page Portwood II & Sara Frost. Of course it's a possibility being in that time period, that either of these wives could be a 1st or 2nd wife.

Re: Quells

My first intro to the QUELL family was via Catherine MUENKER, nee QUELL, who resided in Ashland, Schuylkill Cnty, PA.
Also, in that location was a Philip QUELL, who I believe was related to the aforementioned Catherine.
About the same time, within Schuylkill Cnty, PA, are found (1)Joseph QUELL (in 1860 Pottsville) & married to Augusta. They relocate to Clinton Cnty, MO, along with their PA-born children: Josephine, John, George, Louis/Lewis, & Joseph.
(2)Louis QUELL who married Mary Dunnigan, who also relocate to Clinton Cnty, MO, with children: Thomas, Jacob, Joseph, Elizabeth & Catherine. (more children are brn in MO)

I do not know with any certainty that all these are related to one another. My info is based upon census, for the most part.

Per death certificates, Philip QUELL/QUILL's father's name was given as John; Catherine Quell Muenker's, as Michael.
Both gave place of birth (in census) as Kuhr-Hessen.

Along with this, I recently saw, at St. Munchin Cemetery, a listing of graves for George MUENKER (1869-1896) & his wife, Anna. The "George" that I've had in my records for 10yrs+ was brn 12 March 1869, Ashland, PA, & went "missing" after the 1880 census of Ashland, PA. He was s/John & Catherine (Quell) Muenker.
The cemetery listing leads me to believe that he moved to MO, near cousins.

Does any of this ring a bell?

You probably know that your relative, George Gilmore, who was born in Portadown, Co. Armagh, in 1898 and died in Howth, Co. Dublin, in 1985, played an active role in Ireland’s history. I met him a few times in 1985 when I was trying to find out information about my grandmother, Mabel FitzGerald. He told me a few stories about his family and was very helpful to me, even though he was in great pain. He was very independent: he was very crippled with arthritis, but he insisted on traveling by train from Howth, north of Dublin, to Bray, south of Dublin, where I was staying so we could talk. I know the circumstances under which he was living meant he didn’t want me to visit his place.

There are many websites where you can find out information about George and the books he wrote. He was very concerned to find the manuscript of a play he wrote called Betsey Gray. He thought he had lent it to the actor, Cyril Cusack; as Cyril was a friend of my family, I contacted him to see if he had it. He did not and had no memory of being lent it. I was never able to find the manuscript of it, but I see that notes relating to this play were in
Gilmore’s papers when he died and are now archived along with the rest of the papers at the National University of Ireland at Galway.

Here are some of the websites I have found that give accounts of George Gilmore (try Googling ‘George Gilmore Ireland’):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Gilmore

http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/George_Gilmore

http://www.searcs-web.com/gilmore.html

http://smeagol.library.nuigalway.ie/cgi-bin/col_level.cgi?G4... (Papers of George Gilmore)

http://openlibrary.org/a/OL1594002A/George_Gilmore (Books by George Gilmore)

Richard English, Armed Struggle: the history of the IRA (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2003) mentions George Gilmore

Hi,

My name is James Gilmore. I grew up in the Gilmore family home in Brickens, County Mayo. My great grand father was James Gilmore (1819-1885), he started a mill on the local River Robe in Brickens soon after the famine. He married twice I believe to Bridget Fahy and Jeane Ruane. One of his sons was Patrick Gilmore my grandfather, and one of Patrick's sons was Joe (PJ) Gilmore who was my dad. I am very interested in connecting up with any Gilmores out there who have a connection to my family. See enclosed Land Evaluation report from the Brickens area compiled in 1856. Also enclosed is the 1911 census information on the Gilmores living in my family home in 1911.

Hello,
If you are still reading I hope you will share what information you have with me.
I am an ancestor of Davidson of Dickson County TN and have information about George Davidson, including his pension statement, will, and other. At this point I don't see a connection to my Davidson group but one never knows.
Evidently George Davidson came somewhat early to Blount County with the Gilmores. His pension statement states he was born in Albemarle VA then lived in the Craven District of SC. The only record I have found at this point that looks related to these Davidson/Gilmores may be for a land record in which a James and Elizabeth Gilmore selling land to Thomas McKnight in 1774.
George Davidson left his will in Dickson. He is also listed as one of the RW vets who are buried in Dickson. But you have peaked my interest by stating that George lived in Humphreys County. Do you mean his son, George, and/or widow came to live there?
Thank you for any feedback you are willing to share.
Robin Garland
Dear Robin,
my email address is gildent@msn.com. WOW, I am excited
to hear from you! I have been researching this for 20 years
and you are the first Davidson descendent I have come across! I would LOVE to hear any scrap of info. that you have!!! In the "Genealogical Abstracts of Rev. War Penison
Files Vol.I A-E " it states that Elizabeth Davidson's brother Matthew (my line) at age 71 in 1840 living in Dickson County verified her claim. Matthew's son was James Gilmore.George and Elizabeth Davidson actually lived very
close to the Dickson/Humphrey's county line, as did Matthew
Gilmore. In the 1830 Census they were listed as living in
Humphrey's County, however I personally believe they actually really lived in Dickson county, but were so near the line that they were listed in Humphrey's county. In the
"Rev. War period XOL #9" at the Tenn. State Archives Library
on page 31 It lists George Davidson married Elizabeth Gilmore 10/20/1784 in York Dist. SC. In 1840 Matthew
Gilmore of Tn gave statement of marriage" In Dickson COunty
Tennessee on July 1, 1822 the court records record that
" GILMORE-- 1,July,1822 . Georege Davidson made oath that
Matthew Gilmore, William Gilmore, John Gilmore, James
Gilmore,James McCrory and his wife Jane, George Davidson
and his wife Elizabeth, Alex Scott and his wife Mary, are
the legal heirs of Margaret Conn of the state of Delaware".
Dickson Tennessee County Court Minutes book #2).ANYWAY, if
you are George Davidson's descendent, you have a GIlmore
relation because his Wife Elizabeth was the sister of
Matthew Gilmore. I have more info. than I can post here!
If you will send me your email address (I'm at gildent@msn.com) I'll send you what I have and would
be MOST interested in what you have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have a great day!
Caroline Gilmore
Be sure to put in .net and not .com sometimes this happens and won't go through.
I will try to e-mail you some stuff about Charles if I get your e-mail address.
Dennis, I will be happy to send copies of what I have but it is way to much for E-mailing. Send your address and I will mail you copies. Who is Steve? What relation is he to you?
Charles Emery SR's father Nelson was married to a German woman whose father John Stolicker came from Germany to Canada and that is where the Emery's lived until the 1890's
in Leeds Canada. They emmigrated to Michigan by train crossing a bridge by Port Huron and settled around Saginaw County. I'm always happy to find someone interested in the family. Joanna

Hi again, I was just looking at the previous posts fom awhile ago. Steve Badgely contacted me a year ago and I realize you come from the Charles Jr branch of the family. Do you have access to the info I sent him? Charles jr was an interesting character who served in WWI. I have an original letter he wrote about the end of the war in France. I probably sent a copy of it to Steve. Joanna

hello Dennis, My name is Joanna Emery Miller. I have extensive information on the Emery branch but have met a block when it comes to Ellen McKnight Gilmore and Moses Gilmore. Do you have any info on them? I have picture of their cemetery plot in Freeland MI where most of the Emerys are buried. I would say we are distant cousins as I am decended from Roy Emery son of Charles and Abbie Emery. Are you decended from Nell, Roys sister? I'll have to get my book out and check. I would like to hear from you again. I think she had a daughter Elaine. Please keep in touch Joanna
my e-mail is jomill35@verizon.net

GILMORE, SWINDELL, CARMACK

Searching for: Mrs. JOHN CARMACK and/or OPAL M. GILMORE and/or MAXINE GILMORE from Baxter Springs, Kansas and/or HARRY EDWARD SWINDELL (b.abt 1926) and/or JOE WESLEY SWINDELL (b.abt1928-29) were born in Picher or Miami Ottawa County(?), Oklahoma.
Maxine Gilmore (b.abt1908) from Baxter Springs, Kansas and William Ralph Swindell (b.1897-GA) married on March 22, 1926 in Gerard, Kansas. They lived in and around Picher and Miami, Oklahoma while her husband William Ralph Swindell was working in Mining Operations in the areas around Joplin, Missouri with their children. They were divorced (“abandonment”) in 1929-30 in Ottawa, County, Oklahoma and their children (Harry Edward age 3 years and Joe Wesley age 9 months) custody and care were awarded to Maxine (Gilmore) Swindell. William Ralph Swindell apparently had moved on as he elected not to appear in court and sent a certified letter, dated May 8, 1928 from Burke, Idaho to the courts in Ottawa advising that he waivered his right to appear in court. Maxine and her children were believed to have remained in the Picher or Miami Oklahoma area for at least a short time or she and the children may have moved back to her family’s home in Baxter Springs, Kansas.

Information below from Montana, death index, and newspaper obituary archives show the following that could very well be the same William Ralph Swindell discussed above:

Montana Death Index:
Name: William Swindell
Age: 53
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1897
Gender: Male
Death Date: 15 Dec 1950
Death County: Silver Bow
Index Number: SB 7727 Source:
Montana Office of Vital Statistics

__
12/17/1950
Montana Standard
Butte, Montana
RALPH Swindell
Ralph Swindell. 53. died suddenly
Saturday morning while at work in
a stope on the 3200-foot level of
the Leonard mine. Coroner R. E.
Sayatovic said death apparently was
due to a heart condition, although
an autopsy will be performed.
Mr. Swindell had lived at 257
East Park.
The body Is In Duggan's Merrill
mortuary.

December 22, 1950
Montana Standard
Butte, Montana
WILLIAM R. SWINDELL
The funeral of William Ralph
Swindell was conducted Thursday
afternoon at Duggan's Merrill
mortuary, with the Rev. Dorranee
N. Jensen officiating.
Burial was In the American Legion
plot In Mountain View cemetery,
where officers and members of
Silver Bow post No. 1, American
Legion, held military rites.
The Rev. Mr. Jensen served as
chaplain and Arthur Clark as
bugler. Commander Robert Heckman,
was in charge of -a firing
squad of Hugh Doyle, William Carlson,
Henry Gardner, Jack Wulf and
Pete Johnson. Al Bartle was the
color bearer and Maurice Kiely and
William Hepoia were the color
guards.
Pallbearers were William Hepoln,
Arthur Clark, Henry Gardner, Jack
Wulf, William Carlson and Ervin
Laity.

We are not completely satisfied that the Montana Death Index and Obituaries published in the Montana Newspaper “Montana Standard” in Butte, Montano is the same person as the William Ralph Swindell that was married to Maxine Gilmore and the father of Harry Edward Swindell and Joe Wesley Swindell in Ottawa, Oklahoma in 1926 through 1929-30.

Any help in location any descendants of Maxine Gilmore Swindell, Harry Edward Swindell, Joe Wesley Swindell or any of her family, (parents, grandparents, relatives, etc.) could be very helpful in helping us to locate Maxine Gilmore and William Ralph Swindell’s children and their descendants.

Any help will be appreciated and thanks for reading this posting.
My grandmother was a gilmore. (Lillian) her mother was Lena. My grandmother moved to New york anmd is shown in the 1920 and 1930 census. She married a David Tredell Rapelyea. in the 1920 census it shows my granmdmother along with her sister Elsie living in her household. In the 1930 census, it shows my great grandmother living in the household. I know that my grandmother (lillian) died in the 1930's because of delivering her last male child.

Hello Steve,

Wondered if anyone else had responded to your query. My name is Dennis Emery Mathews. Elaine (Emery) Mathews was my mother and Florence (Badgley) Emery was my grandmother. I don't have the exact dates at hand but I believe that Florence died in Indianapolis in 1965. My mother died in June of 1970. My mother had a cousin, Helen, who would have been the daughter of Grace.

Best regards,
Dennis Emery Mathews

Hello Joanna,

I was interested to see your post on Ancestry.com to Steve Badgley regarding Charles Emery. I take it he was brother to your grandfather Roy. Charles was my grandfather and his daughter Elaine was my mother. Since my mother was an only child and died in 1970 and my grandfather died in 1975 we (my two sisters and I) have not had much in the way of connection to the Emery side of the family.

You had mentioned in your reply to Steve Badgley that you have a letter from my grandfather written shortly after WWI as well as photos from their residence on Grant St in Indianapolis. I would by very grateful if you could provide me with copies, especially the letter. I'm not sure that I have a copy of any correspondence from my grandfather.

I would also be interested in information you may have on Emery family history. I have often thought of pursuing that investigation but have not started and have little to go on at this point. I recall a story my mother once related saying that somewhere in our ancestry was a German mercenary soldier (Hessian) hired by the British to fight during the Revolutionary War who located to Canada after the war. I don't know if this individual would have been on the Emery side or on my grandmother's (Badgley) side, however.

Again, I would be grateful for information you could provide.

Best regards,
Dennis Emery Mathews

Joanna, I would prefer not to post my address. I had tried to send you an email to your verizon address but it had bounced back.

Was your mother or father an Emery? My mother spoke of cousins on her mother's side but I don't recall her mentioning the cousins she must have had on her father's side, which would have included your father (mother?).

Steve Badgley must be related to my grandmother Florence Badgley, who was the wife of Charles Emery (Jr).

I recall my grandfather stating that he had grown up in Pelston, Michigan, which is in the northern tip of the lower peninsula. I knew he had brothers and sisters but I don't recall if I ever met any of them. They may not have lived in the Indianapolis area where he had moved and lived the remainder of his life. I do remember often hearing of one brother who went by the nickname 'Bus'. There was another brother who must have lived in the Columbus, Indiana area. One of my sisters who also lived in Columbus during the 1980s had an opportunity to meet him.

I'm not very familiar with this web site as I just happened upon it today after doing a google search with my mother's maiden name.

It sounds like I could learn a lot from you. Thanks for your information.

Dennis

I'm looking for information regarding William H. Gilmer/Gilmore, born about 1800 in North Carolina. He married Sarah T. Lewis, born about 1802. His children include James Alexander Scott Gilmer (b. 9-9-1823, d. 5-17-1866). If you have any information regarding William H. Gilmer/Gilmore's ancestry, I will appreciate you sharing it.

Re: David Gilmore of Wrentham, MA

Adam Gilmore was born in 1763 and discharged from REv War in 1780. He then went to Ct, STamford MA, and then to Williamstown MA. He married the daughter of Epenetus Ketchum from Clarksburg, MA. They then moved to Bristol, VT. Elihu Ketchum, Epenetus cousin, married Sarah Seelye, they lived in Williamstown. I though Adam married Elihu's daughter, but the Seelye geneologist said they had only one daughter and her name was Sarah. She would have been a Ketchum, not a Seelye. I sent another thread with more information on the relationship of Adam to the Pawlet Gilmores.
