Clara Gilson's second husband was John Murphy. I am a descendant of Clara's sister, Mary. I have corresponded with other Gilson cousins - and have learned there may be at least 4 revolutionary war ancestors thru the Gilson side.
Elizabeth (Lizzie) Waggoner Gilson - is buried in Brier Hill Cemetery, in Rice Township, Sandusky County, with her husband Levi, and a few of her children. Levi's mother, Lydia, is also buried there. From my research some of the information posted on the trees is incorrect. You may contact me privately at mgoss@windermere.com.

Joyce - I have more info on the Gilson side to share with you, and would love to have info on Elizabeth (Lizzie) Wagner Gilson's and Clara Gilson's family. My mom always told me Elizabeth Waggoner's last name was pronounced Wagner - and perhaps there was some connection to the composer - but nothing verified. Do you know who were the parents of Elizabeth Waggoner?
My name is Mary Joyce Lemmon Blackburn. My father, Charles William Lemmon was the son of Clara Gilson, who was the daughter of Levi and Lizzie Wagner Gilson, who has the same history ...being from Luxenburg... with relationship to the composer..second cousin..I think...Richard Wagner..we have a copy of his birth certificate. I am anxious to have more info on my family ancestry. My father died in 1956. He married my mother in Oklahoma..Lottie Leone Cagle...

Stomach/Colon cancer runs, as a resessive trait, in the Gilson family. It's starts as a form of adenomatous polyposis and can be screened with early colonoscopies. I got it from inheriting 2 copies of this gene from my mother and father. It was discovered following routine colonoscopy when I was 50 years old. Following colon removal, i'm 4 years cancer free. Still in surveilance and have yearly CT scans and sygmoidoscopiesand endoscopies. I have had genetic testing and counseling and truly have 2 copies of the AFAP gene.

Hello!
I know it has been years since you posted this message but I just happened to come across it. I am interested in your Eleazer Gilson I believe he lived in the province of quebec approx. 1825. Although I have been looking for a Eleazer Gibson, I believe the spelling was wrong and it should have been a Gilson...Very interested in your reply.

In my case, the name was originally Gilenson, and my grandfather changed it at naturalization. So I'm quite certain that most other Gilsons are not related to me. My father had only one brother, all the others were sisters, so only these two lines are related to each other.

No direct relation that I'm aware of. However it could have been a cousin. Do you know where in Maine he originated from? Our line originate in Groton, Mass and then Harrison, Cumberland, Maine.

The historical papers of Groton, Mass. are an excellent source of genealogical information which are available for viewing on here under publications. Also checking with the New England Genealogical Society or utilizing Heritage Quest will also afford you access to those papers.

Good luck in your search!

I have that same info Arlene. From what I've found with contacting some of the other Gilson researchers that have dealt with my cousin Mildred, no one has been able to prove a direct connection to William Gilson. Also, every research I've located has always linked me to Joseph Gilson and Mary Caper - not Cooper and Thomas Gilson has not proven to be a direct connection. Of course, I am not the detailed researcher that Mildred was, but her records do not support a connection with Thomas.

My line follows down from, Son of Joseph and Mary Caper Gilson, Joseph Gilson and Hepsibah ?. And I have 5 names listed for their children, but who knows - as I look at the records, I think there may have been a typo in copying Mildred's info and/or I may have merged one too many files.

I have Timothy and Samuel as children of Timothy Gilson and Rebecca Gates. Which line do you hail from?

BTW - Hi Sari too!!!!!! I'm sure you are reading this one too!

We all need to compare notes!

Glad it helped. BTW - Is there anything that you had, that I didn't have in my list - a single date, a location, a child? Any additional names that would bring my info more in to the present?

I wish I did have photos - the earliest I have is of my grandfather when he was a child about 1890 or so. The photos and the letters as well as any other earlier family documents were lost in a fire at his home in the late 1890's in Garrettsville, OH. Fortunately, my great great grandfather at that point, decided to start compiling information on the family line by communicating with David Gillson (Jillson)and was able to get our line down on paper going back to Joseph Gilson and Mary Caper. My Dad's cousin, Mildred James, had researched since the 1970's, doing all by snail mail and travelling with her husband all over the country, making connections with Gilsons all over, and going to town clerks, courthouses, and libraries, researching what she could. In 1995 I started putting her information in to my FTM program and I started researching as well, but most of mine is done online. I really would like to see how the tree has truly branched out. The history and the stories are great, but I'm unfortunately not the dutiful genealogist with documenting all of my sources, as I should. Now that I've retired, I am trying to do so and I am still trying to input some of Mildred's work in as well, but there are thousands of sheets of Family group sheets that I have to go through - and it's almost faster for me to find them on the computer and merge the census information that way!

Here is what I have on Evaline Gilson's family. I have her as the daughter of Joseph Gilson and Anna Faulkner. The Josh you have may possibly be an abbreviation for Joseph.

Much of my info is merged from One World Tree, BUT none of my names in this immediate line have OWT as a source, so I have to assume this in info I put in to my database when I was copying my elderly cousin's research in to the file.

Maybe this is your link!

Hope so!
Judy

1.
Re: Who are the Gilsons?

I would say the Gilson/Gillson/Gilston/Jillsons are about 6 out of 10 related - possibly. I've found Gilsons who told me their name was changed to Gilson from Goldstein when their family came from Germany during WWII. I've found a Gilson like that changed it to Gilson from G??????, a Lithuanian name.

Then there are many branches of the Gilsons that are English, Irish, and even African American - but haven't found out how that came about?

I wish I could find the English Gilson links between the lines that are here. My line is from Joseph Gilson (b. 1610 Freeing, Kent, ENG/Mary Caper from Groton, Mass. We have always figured he was descended from William Gilson, but others have him descended from a Timothy (I think).

There's a line of Gilson(Gilston(e))'s that started in Ireland (Richard Gilstone) in the early 1700's and came to PA in the 1730's.

Then there is Mayow Gilson (b 1824 Canadian/English) and settled in Michigan.

There are Irish Gilsons that settled in Maine in the 1700's or 1800's. There's an Irish Gilsn line in New Jersey that apparently came over in the late 1800's.

There are Scandanavian Gilson's in Minnesota/Wisconsin.

There's a Gilson line associated with Oil City PA and a line associated with Crawford County in OH. Off the top of my head, I can't recall if I am linked to either line, and can't remember their origins.

The Jillsons settled originally in Attleboro (I think). What's strange is trying to prove some of their names changing to Gillson/Gilson are included in my line, but names of parents don't match up. Don't know if I'll ever be able to prove.

I haven't found anyone that has any info back earlier for the other English Gilsons that settled here later. And I haven't made any connections with Gilsons from England that may have that info.

Sure would love to find the English/ Irish connection, cause there sure has to be a link somewhere!!!!!!!

Judy,
It's been a year since I've visited the board and someone may have answered you request by now, but here os my version.

My records indicate That Daniel was the son of William.
William and Mary Margaret McBroom were married in Orange County, North Carolina in 1782. (I have a copy of their marriage bond). The family moved to Washington County,Virginia and at some point in time moved on to Clark and Rush Counties in Indiana circa 1818. Mary Margaret died in Indiana and William married Sarah McCormack on November 29 in 1821, according Clark County, Indiana marriage records.

Daniel was the son of William and Mary Margaret Gilson. He was married to Jane Bruce, They had four children, Sarah, Samuel L, Alexander and Evan. The family moved to Iowa prior to 1840. Daniel died in 1840 in Iowa and after his death the family moved back to Rush County, Indiana. Sarah married Morris Murphy and according to the 1850 Rush County census the family was living in Rushville. By 1860 the census reported that Jane and Evan were living with Morris and Sarah Murphy. Samuel had moved to Knox County, Tennessee and there was no trace of Alexander. After the 1860 census Evan disappears. My reseach leads me to believe that Alexander died prior to the 1860 census and Evan died between 1860 and 1870. I drew these conclusions from a statement that Samuel L. gave to a surgeon general during his medical discharge from the uniom army in 1962, The doctor diagnosed Sam's disease as a lung disorder similar to TB. Sam informed the doctor that both his brothers had died of the same lung disorder.

My records show that Polly, Archimedes and Robert Harvey were not children of Daniel and Jane. Also That David Gilson's wife was Mary Boone. Icould be wrong.

I am a descendant Horace Maynard Gilson who married Martha Armstrong Turner(Mattie). Horace and Mattie had two boys, Samuel Alexander (my grandfarher)and Edward Carl. Horace was born in Rushville, Indiana in 1864 and Mattie Turner Gilson was born in Knox County in 1866. Your records show an adopted child in Samuel Alexander's line I have no record of that. My mother Mary Louise Gilson was the only daughter of Samuel and Sophronia Birthlee Boley and I am the only son of Mary Louise Gilson Peltier.

I trust I have not confused you. If my records are wrong plesde let me know. I am also interested in the parents of William Gilson. I would like to find out where they came from and their names. If you have any clues, please contact me. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

Regards,
Randy Peltier

Randall,

I show another son for William and Margaret - Leonidas, b 1796, same year as William. Always wondered if this was correct and they were twins.

Also, apparently Mary's mother, also named Mary McBroom went with them or went to live with them at some point, as evidenced by her will, dated October 9, 1809 and entered into probate February 20, 1810. She stated that she is a relict of Andrew McBroom and leaves her estate to William Gilson, his wife Polly, and their heirs forever.
There are some small bequests to her other children, whom she doesn't name unfortunately.
.

Sorry, I have not checked this site for awhile. I tried to send the pictures but I couldn't send the post. I guess it won't take pictures. If you write to me, I will send the pictures.

Lenora

Jane Gilson born 1856 Stowmarket Suffolk

Any info on Jane Gilson, my great grandmother? She married my great grandfather Eugene Ryan. At the last count they had 12 children. I am at a full stop with my great grandfather, I know he was born in 1841 and died in 1941 in Woolwich. I cannot find any trace of his birth or marriage. Also on different census he gives his place of birth as Jersy, London, France and Ireland. I know he was a mariner for many years. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Chris
