The story is very interesting and telling. I have followed the path to this person which can be traced back to Vienna, Austria where the majority of the Ginter family originated. The family crest bares a striking resemblence to another major family crest of the area...can't recall the name. Perhaps someone can tell us?

Re: James Albert GINTER

My name is Kristian and the following information was given to my mother-in-law, Naomi Ruth Maddox Connley. Let me know if I can help.

The research from this report is from many sources of information, and many family members who have devoted their time and effort to discover where we came from. I, Mary Ginter Stone, personally thank the many Cousins, Aunts, Uncles and Mom and Dad for their input into this research. I want to especially thank Wanelyn Ginter, for the fountain of information, and will remember her request for information on the McKinney family. Now to begin our journey into our past.

Our ancestry begins in Frankfurt, Germany. Our German name was Gunthur, being changed yo Ginter, possibly when the Gunthur men boarded the ship bound for America. Many ship's first mate, or captain's could not understand German, let alone, spell it correctly, it is believed the Gunthur name was misspelled to Ginter, and the boys kept the Ginter name for their American name. We found a passengers list from an unknown ship listing, a Michael, Conrad, and Dewalt Ginter, who had sailed from Rotterdam to Philadelphia in 1748.

In the early 1700's, one of our male ancestors was murdered in Frankfurt, Germany. He, and his three sons, were cutting firewood in the woods, a friend was helping, and for some reason the friend killed their father. His three small sons witnessed the murder, and swore vindication against the man. As the years went by, and the boys grew into manhood, the murderer was afraid for his life, and fled to America. The boys now men followed their fathers murderer. They followed him to Rotterdam, and set sail for America, landing in Philadelphia in 1748. They continued to follow him. On an undetermined day, in Lexington, Kentucky they found the man and killed him. The three men split, one believed to have settled in Lexington, one in Richmond, and one in Bath County.

We have not found any activity from 1748, until Michael's will was probated in 1799. That was a total of 51 years, were the boys in hiding, or just getting used to a new country. Remember they came to America with no family, friends, work, or least of all a home, and separating from each other in Lexington, they didn't have each other.

Needless to say we believe these three Ginter men to be the three small boys that made that long term commitment to vindicate their fathers murder, and made the long and dedicated journey so many years ago.

There are yet to be facts found on this story, however we found the passengers list with the three Ginter men landing in Philadelphia, the rest of the story comes from our elders, many of them still live to tell the story. Maybe someday we will know the rest of the story. Who was this so called "friend" that killed our ancestor? Why did he kill him? Is his family around today? So many unanswered questions!!!

In Michael's will in 1799, he listed his sons as Conrad, George and John.

Below you will see some of the findings from Census Records, Court House Records in Estill and Bath County, the Estill and Kenton County Libraries.

The first record of the Ginters was in Bath County, Kentucky in the census of 1830. There was a John Ginter who said he was born in Philadelphia. This John was married to Polly Oakly and they were the parents of Samual born 1829.

In 1840 in Bath County Census there was a Jacob Ginter listed, along with John, Polly and their family.

It is at this point we believe we can say that the information we found in York County, Philadelphia in 1888 indicated Jacob and John were brothers, and came to Bath County from Philadelphia.

By 1809 John is dead, leaving seven children, 4 girls and 3 boys. The boys were Jacob, John and Henry. I believe that Jacob and John were the two that both came to Bath County, Kentucky and John is the father of Sam.

There were lots of furnace operations in Philadelphia in the 1800's and I believe that is where the Ginters started working in that line and developed quite a skill of it.

William Henry Ginter, born Nov. 05, 1836 in Bath County. He married Jane Moore on Feb. 25, 1860 and William died Aug. 29, 1891. They had 8 children: W.P, John Morgan, Richard, Thomas, William, Leonard, Jacob and Lafayette.

John and Polly both died in 1848. I'm not sure what caused their deaths, but they left six children. Sam was the oldest child of John and Polly. We have not been able to find were John and Polly are buried but we believe they are buried at Cave Run. When they put the lake in they moved their bodies into another graveyard on higher ground.

Sam and Mariah Stuart were marries about 1851. We can find no record of their marriage. The marriage was probably in Bath County because their first two children (Charles and George) were born at Clear Creek.

By 1855 the family was in Estill County, near the Cottage Furnace. Sam was a clerk for Mason and Wheeler, owners of the Cottage Furnace. By 1859 Sam along with two others(Pierce and Vaughn) had purchased the operation.

The McKinney's purchased the furnace from them in 1867 and operated it until 1879.

Sam enlisted in the Confederate Army in September 1862 but was taken prisoner in November 1862 in Letcher County, Kentucky and was sent to Vicksburg in December 1862.

John Morgan Ginter born June 14, 1863. John married Susanne Nolan July 19, 1875. Susanne died April 15, 1903. Their children were Willie, James Albert, Ida May, Jessie Bell, Mollie, Jerry, Edward and Johnathan. On Nov. 17, 1904 John Morgan married Jeannetta Jones and they had 4 children: Martha Ellan. Tom, Newt and Lucy.

In 1864 Sam's little nine year old sister, Mary, died. I believe that was their first child. Charles had died as a baby while they were still in Bath County. In 1866 Mariah died leaving Sam with George of age 13, Nancy age 8, Richard age 5, and baby Adelia age 1.

Sam remarried in June 1867 to LeAnna Adams who was 21 years old. Sam of course was 38 by then. Baby Adelia died in Sept. of 1867 and shortly thereafter LeAnna died.

Sam married Laura Tipton and their eleven children were born from 1869 until 1894. Laura was about 20 years old when they married. She died in 1902 from cancer. It is said that she had a cancer on her face and she locked herself in her room and would not eat, starving herself to death. She is buried at Marbley, along with Sam. Sam died in 1906.

Mariah, Sam's first wife is buried in a remote area on Hardwicks Creek in Powell County along with Mary and Adelia. A church used to be near this cemetery but is now located across the road. This old cemetery is overgrown.

James Albert Ginter, born April 02, 1889 married Nannie Ellen Jones on June 23, 1909. Nannie Ellen died in 1926. They had 8 children: Floyd, Roy, Ollie, LouAnna, John, Austin, Ruth, Coleman. James Albert married two more times, Ema Warren and Anna Sorrell.

April 03, 2007

The above article was given to Harold Louis Ginter several years ago. Since that time on this 04/03/2007 date only three of Alberts children are still living. They are Austin, Coleman and Robert. The second oldest Ray passed away this past year on Oct. 06, 2006. He was 96 years of age. His first wife was Hazel. Hazel passed away April 1970. Ray and Hazel had 2 sons: Ray Ervin and Harold Louis.

Ray Ervin had 4 sons and 2 daughters. Harold Louis has 2 sons. I, Louise, am married to Harold Louis.

Hope this is some help.

Louise Ginter

April 03, 2007

Feel free to check out the information I have found in my tree: http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/pedigree.aspx?tid=1775108

I read your posting and you said anyone who spells their last name "Pifher" is related so that makes us related. My grandfathers name was Charles Edward Pifher and his fathers name was Charles William Pifher. My mother's maiden name is Carolyn Rose Pifher. She is the daughter of Charles Edward Pifher and Ava Agatha Baldock. The story I heard was that my Great-Grandfather Charles William brought my Grandfather and his brothers Robert, Francis and Jerry to Oregon and they settled in Baker in the late 1920's. They were all carpenters by trade and built many homes in the Baker area. My mother was born in June of 1935 in Baker, Oregon. She was followed by Carl, Josephine, Robert, Earl and Patricia. My Grandpa Pifher was raised in Minnesota. He was born Oct. 29, 1909. My mother always said his mother's name was Rose Gamall but the Census records show it being Mary.

George GINTER b. 1885 Kentucky

Looking for info on a George Ginter (b. abt 1885 in Kentucky) who I know had a daughter named Dora (b. abt 1923 in Kentucky). This person and his daughter was listed on the 1930 census with my Loar family in Lawrence Co., Ohio. From what I have been told....that one of the Loar daughters was divorced and moved back home and she had children with this George Ginter. Some of the names of their children were Rosie, Hazel, Clarence, Gertie and Emma Jean. The Loar's daughter name was Eva. Unsure of anymore details. This is why I am asking for help. I am trying to unravel this mystery and find out any info on them.

Thanks, Kelli

Re: John GINTER and Martha Celestine

David and Lucinda (Shelhammer) Ginter were both born in Pa. abt 1810. They had 3 children, Catherine, Eliza, and David by the 1850 Pa. census. They show up in Indiana with another child, Abi, on the 1860 census. From there, no one knows what became of them or their 3 daughters. David married Sarah Caroline Murphy in Indiana, 2 sons were born in Indiana then they go to Missouri by 1866. They are in Andrew Co. Mo, Rochester Twp. with a Whitesville post office address. David Melton's son, Wilfred Ellis and 2 of his brothers, Clarence and James Oscar moved down to St. Clair Co. Missouri and lived their lives there. All 3 are buried at Appleton City, Mo. I think David and Lucinda went back to Pa. but at least 2 of the girls probably married and stayed in Indiana. According to some family members, David Melton was born in Harrisburg, Pa. and David and Lucinda Ginter are buried in York, Pa. I haven't been able to verify any of this. David M. and Sarah had approx. 12-14 children. Some of their other children's names, Henry, (Ark) John R., Ida M. (Co), Annie Dora, David M.,and George.
