I'm am probably not related to these folks, but since you mentioned Gipe and Illinois in the same message, it got my attention. The 1910 census for your group shows that Harry was married previously. If you go back to the 1900 census, you'll see him with his first wife, living with his folks. If you look up to the top of that census page, there are McCarty's listed. Could they be closely related to your group?
There is a piece at Ancestry that may clarify. The book is:
Biographical record and portrait album of Tippecanoe County, Indiana : containing portraits of all the presidents of the United
Date of Publication: 1972
The section of the book details the life of S.R. Gipe, son of Michael Gipe and Mary Magdaline Hilderbrand. S.R. Gipe's wife is identified in this piece as Sarah Ann McCartey who was the daughter of William McCartey, a prominent pioneer of Tippicanoe County. Perhaps that will help you figure out where they connect. Also, the piece notes that S.R. Gipe was a Civil War vet. If he applied for a pension, you may have some luck by ordering his pension file from the National Archives. Though it's getting a little bit distant from his wife, you never know what might be contained therein. Sometimes depositions were taken by other relatives which can help you sort out family lines.
