Re: Looking for the Gipsons of Alabama/Texas

William Jasper Gipson was the son of George Washington Gipson and Mary Esther Atchley Gipson. George Washington Gipson died about 1845, because he is not on the census for 1850.George Washington Gipson is perhaps the son of Randolph or Randol Gipson but not sure of this yet.George Washington is buried under the name Thomas George Gipson. A woman who is also a Gipson descendant put up a headstone for him and was given the wrong info as to his name. His burial place is Union Cemetery,Woodville, Jackson County, Alabama. My line of Gipson goes from the older brother of William Jasper who was John A gipson. I have more info and am willing to share. Nice to hear from another family member.

Hello! I am the Great Granddaughter of Claude R. Gipson (son of William Jasper). I am looking to complete a family tree and can not find a birth certificate on Claude. Also, my grandmother (Ina Jo) has always said we were of the indian decent and remembers going to family reunions and everybody being really dark and did not speak english. I can not find any record of indian. Maybe, someone could help or knows if we are or not! Thankx!

Hello! I am new to this site and my Great Grandfather is Claude R. Gipson. I am trying to piece together our family tree. I hear we originated from native American and trying to verify that. Can anyone help? I do know his father is William Jasper Gipson and his mother was Lula Lovie Harris. I am not exactly sure where the indian comes in......

Wow. I never expected to be trashed in public.

I never claimed any information that I have or provided are "facts". My research includes:
Public records
Family stories
Family artifacts

I used to provide information to all who asked. In fact, I posted all of my data on a web site. Unfortunately, the hosting company went out of business and I lost the site. To make matters worse, we had a power spike (lightning?) that wiped out my computer and the external hard drive that contained my backups of the site and All of my genealogy electronic information.

Whatever I know about the Gibson/Gipson family in Texas is posted out there on the Web on many different gen sites. I do have paper records, but have not had time to redo everything.

If I have ever provided you with data, please consider sending it to me again. I could use the help rebuilding my electronic data.

Shannon

Catie Jane Gipson (Gibson?) Abt 1870-1908, Itawamba County, Mississippi

I am trying to find information on the parents of Catie Jane Gipson (Gibson?), my maternal great-grandmother. Catie was born about 1870 (in northeastern Mississippi?), was married on June 4, 1888 to James Patrick Pettigo in Itawamba County, Mississippi. She died about 1908 in same county. Their children were: (1)Bob J. Pettigo, (2)Luther Pettigo, (3)Cordelia Pettigo Oswalt (moved to Arkansas upon marriage), (4)Catherine Viola Pettigo Johnson (my maternal grandmother, wife of Luther M. Johnson), and (5)John Pettigo (wife: Lodara). I am somewhat unsure of correct spelling of Catie's maiden name. Her marriage record has "Gipson", but a hand-written family document has her maiden name as "Gibson".
Any information would be much appreciated and I would be happy to share any that I have.

You are right. I have found that tahe mother of William jasper is indeed Mary Esther Atchley. and His father was George Washington Gipson. George Wshington is buried in I believe the Piney Grove cemetary in Jackson County Alabama. G W is buried under the wrong name. He is buried under the name of Thomas George( ther was no Thomas George). This mistake was made by my cousin.I cannot find where Esther is buried, There a couple of william Jasper's children that are missing.

One is in Mason County, Texas where Beck is buried and the other is in Titus and Franklin Counties of Texas. You are not alone and I hope you stay with it. My family of Gipson is big we use to go to the family union's in Refugio, Texas where the hole town last name is Gipson i think they have like a liitle over 2,800 people but more then 3 Quarters of the town are gipson might just be about
200 to 500 that are not and most are my family are form ever where LA, TX, NC, SC, CALI, MI, AZ, most of us are french and black some of us are whites and others are black and indain so it's hard to say but for over 115 years one thing has never changed in the. Gipson way of life those who you run across with a P in their name instead of a B are family and their no taking that back are name were not only changed because of our scotland roots but as slaves they changed the B to a P so that the slave master could understand who were owned by the Gibson clain and as such in history those slave were given the last name of that owner as time went own my Great..Great...Great...Great... Grand parent's had half white and black children by some of their owners given us the Gipson name not just by slave rights but by born rights.... so i am proud to be a Gipson Man and will die a Gipson Man as my farther bvefore me.

P.S. as soon as i find out my farthers farthers name i will let you know thanks for the reply...
Your Family,
Bro.Michael L. I can't find James' parents. Family story is that he lived in W.VA with parents and 2 younger sisters. His parents were killed by Indians while the children hid in the loft. James then (age 19) packed up the two girls (age 14 & 16), wagon and possessions and moved to Crittenden Co. James worked as a logger for his future father-in-law (Francis "Marion" Travis). It is said the girls went to work for wealthy Tenn. politicians as maids.
Anyone with any info, please respond. Thank you

Thanks for the information Michael. I'll keep it as a reference and if I find anything in my "digging up of old bones" I'll let you know. I haven't found anybody in particular, in my branch of the family anyway, that lived in, or recently settled in, Refugio, Texas. Most of the Gipson family I'm related too lived in the Terrell area, the Port Arthur area, the Woodville area and the San Antonio area of Texas. They migrated from South Carolina to Tennessee to Texas. And the "B" changed to "P" in the last name as a result of Census takers mis-spelling what they heard when they interviewed people as they took the census. I know of some records from the 1700's in South Carolina that shows my "family" had a slave or two back then. But as far as I know, when they moved to Tennessee there was no reference to any slaves being associated with the family once in Franklin County.

Again...thanks for the input!
I have 12 James Gipson's, one of these is a Frederick James. Do you have any middle names or middle initials for any of these possible uncles? Maybe an idea of when they were born, or where?

Hello Michael. I've searched my rather extensice spread shett on the Gipson's and didn't find any reference to a Harold L or Beatrice. This doesn't mean there isn't a tie-in here. Can you give me the names of Harold R Gipson's parents and where they were born? This may help. You also answered back to a query I had on Rebecca Fern Gipson. Are you related to her in some manner? If so...how? Rebecca is a first cousin of mine 2x removed. Her grandfather is/was may great great grandfather.

Joseph Alfred Gipson (1911 or 1912 - )

I'm looking for some specific information on Joseph Alfred Gipson, a 1st Cousin 2 times removed of mine. According to the 1920 Census, dated Jan 1920, Joseph was 8 years old at the time the census was taken. Seeing as how 1920 had just started, that would make the year of his birth 1911. I cannot find anything in the Texas Birth Index for Joseph Alfred. His parents, Solomon Odell "Sol" Gipson and Lula Mae Dudley didn't contribute a lot to the records back then. I have been only moderately successful in getting birth info on any of their children. When I looked in the Social Security Death Index I found a Joseph A Gipson born on 29 Jan 1912 but that would make him 7 at the time the 1920 census was taken. Now...his parents may have "said" he was 8 at the time because the date the census was taken was a couple of weeks from his 8th birthday. This is only a conjecture. There was also an Alfred Gipson with a birthday in April 1911. This would make him 8 in January 1920 and he would turn 9 in April. With the propensity of my family to use first and middle names whenever it pleased them, it seems, this Alfred may have had Joseph as first name. Can anyone shed some light on when it was that Joseph Alfred Gipson was born, probably in Kaufman County, Texas? How about when he died, where he passed away and where it is he's buried? I have some information on his children and it's possible they are still living. Thanks for any help. One other thing...his wife's name was Gladys Laverne Wooldridge, if this will help.

I'm obviously researching the Gipson family and their members that were in the Kaufman/Terrell/Tona, Texas area. I've reached a dead end on Rebecca Fern Gipson. She was born in Feb 1905 and was living/working as a secretary in a Texas Military College in Terrell in 1930. Her father's name was Joseph Miller Gipson, Jr. and her mother was Lela D. Skipper. If anyone has information on her after 1930 please get in touch with me. I have a lot of info on hereimmediate family and ancesters that I can share as needed.

Joseph Miller Gipson is my Great Great Grandfather. He was first married to Texas Ann Sutton and when she died he married Geneva Tidwell. Texas Ann gave him 9 children and Geneva gave him 8 more. Joseph died in 1915 and is buried in the Henderson-Mosely cemetery outside of Terrell, Texas. Geneva died in 1945 and I think she's buried in Terrell itself. I'm at work right now and can't access my genealogical info at home just yet. I have photographs of almost every Gipson tombstone in the Terrell cemetery and can verify whether she is there or not this evening. If this is the same Joseph Miller Gipson you are speaking of...let me know.

I believe the mother of William Jasper Gipson was Esther as listed on the Tallapoosa County, Alabama census of 1860. This family is also listed in the 1850 census in another Alabama county. I believe Jackson County. Possibly the father of William is G W Gipson. There is a marriage recorded in Rhea County for a G W Gipson and an Esther Atchley in June 14, 1827. I believe them to be the parents of William Jasper
