Thanks so MUCH for the location of his death. I have the Hough Cem. records that says he died Sept. 17th. Is your date correct? I have searched for his will to no avail. In fact, I thought maybe he died elsewhere because I couldn't find it in the Shelby Co., IN records. Do you have it? If so, will you please give me a hint as to how to locate it?

Re: Richard/Charlotte. I don't have much - just their marriage date and estimated dates of birth/death + names of 7 children. As you probably know, they were in Nebraska in 1860 and 1870 census. Let me know if you need anything.

Barb

Mary Jo,

I have no direct information on any such connection. It is possible that there is one, however. A large number of Gird family members came to America around 1812 and settled near Washington, D. C. The family members then split up and the ones that I am related to went to New York, Arizona and California.

Re: GIRD

I am from South Africa and my mother's surname was Gird before she married. I didn't realize there were so many Girds in the world as there are only a few in Cape Town and they are direct family.

Gird, Gossett, Speiser

FYI

GEORGE GIRD, joint editor and proprietor of the Humboldt Sentinel, was born and reared in Shelby County, Ind., where he was identified with the farming and stock industry. In 1859, at the age of twenty-seven, he came to Nebraska and located in Richardson County, was actively connected with farming and stock raising, until 1882, when he retired from it and engaged in the present business, which he very ably represents. In 1855 he was married to Miss Mary E. Gossett, who was born and reared in Indiana. They have a family of four sons and three daughters living--William, Ida M. (now Mrs. David Speiser, jr.), whose sketch appears in this work, George, Mary, John, Arthur, and Gertrude. Mr. and Mrs. Gird buried their son Edward, aged sixteen years, February, of the present year in the Steele Cemetery, Falls City. Mr. Gird has always taken an active interest in the growth and development of the social and industrial life of his locality since coming to the State and has been an efficient official in his county.
Source:
Andreas' History of the State of Nebraska
