You are a genealogy angel! Thank you so much for this information. I do have their passenger list, but the cost of the trip is very interesting and will be added to my gggf and gggm's history. I love this community who spends its time not only studying their own family, but reaches out to pass on their knowledge to others also. I contribute through RAOGK, BWO, and Rootsweb, so you have paid me back for others! Thanks again for such a wonderful touch of color to their history...

I am not related to GIRTONs at all, but have found what I think is your family in a shipping agent's book (Hamden & Co, Ltd) that was found recently in a loft in Blackpool, England.

John GIRTON 36, Mary GIRTON 28, Joseph GIRTON 2, William GIRTON under 3 mos. They paid their deposits to the agent on 1 July 1850. The fare for John & Mary was £4 5s each, for Joseph £3 15s, for William 10s. The balance was to be paid in Liverpool.

obit for Ira Girton, died 1904 Kansas

Delphos Republican, Ottawa County, Kansas, April 29, 1904, page 5:
Ira Girton Dead
Ira Girton, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Girton, died at his home in Garfield township Tuesday night after an illness of less than a week. The cause of his death was pneumonia.
Ira Girton was a native of this county and spent his whole life among the friends of his early childhood. he was married about four years ago to Miss May Whitley. To them was born a daughter, now some two or three years old. Mr. Girton was about twenty-eight years old at the time of his death.
Our acquaintance with Mr. Girton was limited to the past four years, but we had learned to regard him very highly as a man. The testimony of those who knew him best is that by his death a loving husband and father, a dutiful son and an exemplary citizen has been taken from our midst.
It is vain in a case like this to try to offer words of consolation. The heart is bowed down with grief and for a time the soul cries aloud, asking for a reason why the dearest one is taken away. But the voice of the divine Comforter and the loving touch of the great Healer will lead the mourning ones into paths of submission to His will.
Rev. McElroy conducted services at the Girton home at 10 o'clock today after which the Delphos lodge of K.P.'s took charge of the services and assisted by the lodge of this city tenderly laid all that was mortal of Ira Girton in beautiful Highland cemetery. --- Better Way

marriage of Dorothy Girton to John Chaney, 1927, Kansas

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, June 16, 1927, page 1:
GIRTON-CHANEY
Miss Dorothy Girton, daughter of Mrs. Charles Rupert, Garfield township and Mr. John B. Chaney of Junction City were united in marriage Sunday afternoon, June 12, at 4 o'clock at the Presbyterian manse. Rev. Marshall E. Lumbar officiated using the ring service.
The bride was gowned in beautiful pink Georgette with hat to match. Miss Francis Chaney of Junction City, sister of the groom, acted as the bride's maid and carried the bride's bouquet of tea roses during the ceremony.
The groom was attended by Wallace J. Newell of Junction City.
Miss Girton was graduated a year ago at Manhattan and taught the past year at St. George.
Mr. Chaney is an energetic young man connected with Uncle Sam's postal service at Junction City, being in charge of the Post Exchange at Fort Riley.
A wedding dinner was served at the country home of Mr. and Mrs. Rupert to the immediate family and a limited number of guests.
After an auto trip to Colorado, they will make their home in Junction City where their friends wish them every happiness.

obit for Henry Girton, born 1843 Pennsylvania, died 1925 Kansas

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, Oct. 29, 1925, page 1:
ANOTHER PIONEER GONE
Henry Girton was born in Berwick, Penn., February 19, 1843, and died at his home in Minneapolis, Kansas, October 22, 1925 at the age of 82 years.
He came to Kansas in 1870, settling on a homestead east of Lost Creek. The country at that time was new and thinly settled. Today the house he erected for his western home is surrounded by a beautiful grove of stately trees, planted by the thrifty Pennsylvanian.
He was a man of very positive character, honest and open as the day. He was a great lover of children, and was interested in all their activities and in their development and welfare. With his friends he was genial and kind in all relations of life.
He was married to Miss Emily Traugh in August, 1875, and to them was born one son, Milton Ira, who died April 20, 1904. Mr. Girton was never quite the same after this loss, which was followed in three years by the death of his wife, Oct. 1907. In 1909 he was married to Mrs. Gasaway. After her death he was united in marriage to Mrs. Andrew Ferris, August 29, 1912.
Mr. Girton was a member of the Knights of Pythias and a regular attendant of the Presbyterian church until failing health prevented. He enlisted in the Civil War, but was in its ranks only a few months when it ended.
For more than a year Mr. Girton had been failing, and since the middle of September, quite rapidly, necessitating a nurse's constant care the last three weeks.
Another of the sturdy pioneers of Kansas has gone to his reward, taking with him all that anyone takes, his character, moulded by many hardships, the social and business contacts of pioneer life, and whatever of Christ's spirit found reception in that character. The wintry blasts have again shaken the tree of life and another leaf has fallen. May the Revelator's words apply to us -- "and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations."
Beside his wife, he leaves only one direct descendant, Miss Dorothy Girton, a grand daughter, and now a young lady. He leaves numerous other relatives in Pennsylvania.
Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon at 2:30

Here are some questions that could be helpful
1. You do not know Virgil's mothers name---even her first name, is that correct?
2. You say he was raised by Fred McFarland---did Virgil's mother marry Fred McFarland---was she around to raise him with Fred or did Fred raise Virgil by himself for some reason?
3. Any idea of what county or what part of Nebraska?
4. Did Virgil have any brothers or sisters?
5. Is Virgil still alive? If not, do you know where and when he died?

I am researching Girtons also and would be happy to help you if I can get a little more information.

Valerie

My grandpa name was Virgil m. Girton. He was born in Nebraska.Later on he moved
to Mondamion Ohio.He either was living with or married my grandmother Mary I
think her madian name was Keating. They went on to have three
kids.Candiance,Terry,&Janice..Terry L. Girton is my father..
Virgil was born June 7 1930 in Nebraska. He was raised however by a stepdad by
the name of Fred McFarland..
The only other piece of information that I have is not Virgils mother but her
mothers madian name is Hawk???

If anyone has anyother helpful information I would greatly happy...Thank you
everyone.
Delbert:

I would love to get the file on your James Girton. I have been searching for the parents/siblings of my Joseph Girton born in PA or NY in 1813. He married Mary or Sarah (have found both names) and had my g-grandmother, Julia Elizabeth Girton in 1857 and Thomas L.E. Girton, Lydia C. and Sarah Amanda in the following years all born in Illinois. The whole family moved at some point while the children were still with the parents to Page County Iowa (very southwest corner of Iowa) They went there between 1861 and 1875. I would love to get your file even if we can't find a connection right now. There are not many Girtons and if it doesn't connect now, it might be the missing piece of the puzzle later.

I think that you might be going in the wrong direction - or I am! If your Jennie was born in Wisconsin and her father was from England, then I have your Jennie as the nickname for Mary Jane Girton, daughter of Joseph Lee Girton and Mary E. Powell. She was born in Wisconsin on Oct 25, 1870 and moved to Winchester, Tennessee with her father and grandmother after her parents divorced. Joseph married Sarah Amanda Bowers and more children joined the family. Jennie's full siblings were William R., John Lee, and Joseph Powell. Her half siblings were Charles B., Rosco Conklin, Laura D. and Fred Parmalee. So check her birth place in the census records and see which family matches!

Looking again at my information I realize that my Mary Jane's mother was born in NY, but her parents were from Ireland. Also, the 1880 Census states her age as 8, so this is a bit off. The marriage to George Smith I got from a cousin, Larry Jones, so I can't be sure. I will try to find out where he got the marriage information from.

G. E. Girton, b. 1885, birth name may have been McGuffy

Looking for info on G.E. Girton born in 1885, married Sadie McBride I believe. They had 6 children one who died in infancy. Childrens names were Gwendolyn, Catherine, William(Bud), married to Bena, Sylvia, and I believe Martha.
They lived on 9th street in Bloom. It is my understanding that GE Girton was from a circus family and the Girtons adopted him. But, I am not sure of this story or not. My mother thought that his original name might have been McGuffy. Any help you can give me would help. Burial locations would be a big help also.

The John and Ellen Girton you refer to are a part of my Girton family. Your Jennie and mine could be the same person but I can't be sure without further info.

I note your reference of Franklin Grove, Illinois; do you have connections there, or was the reference just to John and Ellen?

John Wesley Girton was born in 1842 in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, and died in 1917 at Dixon, Lee County, Illinois. He moved with his family to Illinois in 1853. Ellen (Cahill) Girton was born about 1847 in Ireland and died in 1903. Issue, all born in Illinois:

Henry Marshall, 1865-1936; m. Anna E. Eberly
William M., 1867-1934, m. Ruth Hardesty
Mary, b. ca 1870
Annie, b. ca 1872
Jennie, b 23 Dec 1873
Mattie, b. ca 1876, d. 1885
Louis B., 1877-1971; m. Julie Hanrahan
Katherine (Katie), b. ca Jul 1878
Louisa, b. ca. 1879

There was another Jennie, a third cousin of the above Jennie, who was born about 1871 in Iowa. She was the daughter of James L. Girton (1848-1883) and Flora E. Woodford. It appears she was an only child.

I have a Dave Goff who married Carlin Russell, a descendant of Marjorie Alberta (Girton) Clendenin.

Also a Gary Benson who married Cheryl Tomlinson, a descendant of Parthania Gerton. Girton and Gerton may be interchangeable; I've found both spellings used in one family.

Oh my! The name on her marriage certificate is "Jennifer Girton". I first find her 1900 Franklin County Tennessee. The census states she is born Wisconsin, father/ England, mother/ Ireland. The 1910 census states she is born Tennessee, and father/ England, mother/ Ireland. The 1920 census she is born Wisconsin, and father and mother listed as Wisconsin also. I have never been able to find another Jennie Girton other than the one I find with JOHN and ELLEN Girton of Illinios. I could very well be wrong with what I have. I do know that the marriage certifcate I have, is from Franklin County, most probably Winchester. I have been there many times. She and her husband, George W SMITH, brought the children up in Cowan, only miles away. Lets keep in touch, feel free to email me at my email address. I will dig some more. Thanks.

In the 1880 census John & Ellen Girton had children- Henry, William, Mary, Annie, Jennie, Mattie, Katie, Louisa. I believe this JENNIE is my great-great grandmother, who married George W. SMITH, in Franklin County, Tennessee in 1891.
I find JENNIE in the 1900,1910, and 1920 census Franklin County Tennessee. Their children were , IDA, LUTHER, JENNIE JOSIE and LAURA E. SMITH. *Luther Smith is my line, and he married Odessa FINCHUM, and I do know that Laura E. Smith, married a man by the last name of RAINES. I do not know for sure who JENNIE'S parents were, and on a couple of census, she claims to have been born in Wisconsin although I find no JENNIE GIRTON from Wisconsin with her birth year of approx. 1874.
If anyone is researching this line please contact me..too many brick walls are hurting my head.

George Girton/B.oomsburg, Pa

Looking for info on George Girton born in 1885,mother's name was Margerum (as far as we know) and was not married but was supposed to have left town. Was adopted by the George Girtons who owned a tavern in Bloomsburg. His adoptive mother died first no year and his father died when he was 15 which would have been in 1900. A Mrs. Rhoades gave him a home with her. She had horses and he took care of them and also worked in the woolen mill. We have been trying to put together his family history from when he was adopted and have not had much luck until he married Sadie McBride. Any information we can get concerning his adoptive parents would be greatly appreciated. The picture attached is of the McBrides but George is on the right in the red shirt.
