I had figured they would prove to be interconnected as I moved forward. I would appreciate any help and info that you could pass on to me.

Hi Patricia
I have quite a few James's in my tree
the problem I have is that I cannot trace any of the
births in Ireland I know they came from Northern Ireland
because of birth certs of their children state their parents were born in Coleraine and Dunboe
all the names in my tree are repeated over and over through
through the generations
the furthest back I have this family are about 1796
with the birth of Solomon Given he married a Ruth Gillespie
I think they married in Ireland their oldest son was called
James born 1821 so I am presuming that Solomon's father was called James if naming patterns are anything to go by
Elaine

Patty,

Pennsylvania seems to have been a hot spot for Given immigrants. Mine came through there as well, and predominantly stayed in the area (Philadelphia, mostly).

I've heard of Dungiven, but have never heard a definitive connection to the Given family.
Hello all,

After 15 years of collecting data on my family tree, including my primary Given line, I've begun pulling together this information into a One Name Study. I have started to publish a blog to document my progress, and provide others with a resource for information on the Given name and history.

In addition to updating the blog regularly, I am pooling this information into a common family tree file that I will make available as it comes together. I am hoping others here will be interested in it and my come along for the adventure.

Craig Given
givenroots.wordpress.com

I'm trying to find more info on my gg-uncle, Emory Winfield Given. He was born in 1857 in Auburn, ME. He was the son of Ezra and Naomi Given. He was married twice - first to Nellie with whom he had a son Phillip, and second to Helen with whom he had a daughter Winifred. He lived most of his life in Orange, NJ and was a college professor. You would think I would be able to find more about him, but I can't. I want more info on his wives, his life events, and his children. If you have any info on any of these people, I would most appreciate it. Thanks! Lisa King

Sorry for taking so long to find this, I don't seem to be notified of replies...

My Given line traced their ancestry back through one William 'Laird' Mark who inherited the estate of the Laird of Drumochrin (lots of different spellings) from Ayrshire. This lairdship goes back to the McAlexander family I believe.

Peter

Dear Pam,
I gave my sister all of my family genealogy because she and her son were interested in it. I am expecting her to make copies and give the originals back to me soon, but so far she hasn't done so. My father was Thomas Eugene Given, born in Ottumwa in April of 1921. His father was Thomas Henry Given. I know that before the Givens came to Iowa they lived around Peoria, Illinois and had come from West Virginia before that. Please contact me at my email address and I will give you my telephone number so you can call me directly, or I can call you. I have unlimited minutes on nights and weekends on my cell phone plan. I would love to talk with you and let my husband talk, too. He is actually the one who does the research.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Given Sutton

Hi Rebecca: We may have met many, many years ago at your dad's Jefferson Street address in Ottumwa. I was probably a teen ager at the time. I seem to have a vague memory of something like that. Anyway, I would love to talk! Where do you live now? I recently was contacted also by a descendent of Thomas Henry's sister, Leora Weirbach. Her son, Bob, who is a cousin of my mother, is also interested in the family history. The Givens came to Iowa from Streator, Illinois, and Braxton County, (Charleston area) West Virginia. I have some information that I can send you. Your grandfather and my grandfather, Lloyd Jasper Given were brothers. Their parents were William Franklin Given and Cora Crandall. I happen to have both of their obituaries, along with a sister of our grandfathers. Her name was Alice and she died when she was about 14 years old at the farm of Cora's sister, near Hedrick, Iowa. It would be great if we could talk. I would like to contact you at your email address, but it isn't available to me. The only way I can contact you is through this message board at this time. Best regards, Pam Tippett

Margaret Given b.c. 1828 m. Joseph Ford

I'm looking for information about the family of Margaret Given/Givens (middle initial possibly V), b. c. 1828, d. 1861-67, who married Joseph Haines of Salem Cty., NJ. Their children were William Haines, b.c. 1854 in DE or NJ; Rebecca Haines, b.c. 1856 in NJ, and Mary Mattson Haines, b. 18 Feb. 1861, in Smyrna, Kent Cty., DE. I haven't been able to find birth, marriage, or death dates for Margaret. The family was living in Smyrna, Kent Cty., DE, in 1860, and Joseph was living with Rebecca and Mary (and a new wife) in Philadelphia in 1870.

Dear Craig,
I belong to an organization, in Ireland called The Ulster
Historical Foundation, and as a member there are a lot of
databases that help with research. I am just getting into
this, but i thought you could contact them and possibly join
yourself, the membership secretary is Mark.campbell@uhf.org.uk, Through this foundation, they sent
me a list of researches for Northern Ireland, and I contacted
one who also said that she did not find any info. to connect
the town of Dungiven and the castle with the name, although
I think I mentioned to you that the name was very common in
that part of northern Ireland. There were a lot of Given
names in the phone book there, I wanted to get more
information, but I was limited on time because I was on a
tour. Also there is a castle there called "Dungiven Castle. Let me know if you have any information, Patty

Elaine

I believe the family originally came from Scotland. Also two of John's brothers (James and William) immigrated to Scotland. However, I would believe that it was after 1841, as John immigrated to Canada in 1861. No idea as to occupation in Ireland. John was a farmer in Canada, but many immigrants became farmers when coming to Canada
