Since your post is pretty old and I don't know if you are still watching these boards, but just in case you are -- Horace Gladwin was my great grandfather. His sister Angeline was married to Frank Hollingsworth. Frank's nephew, Harold Hollingsworth, married Horace's daughter,Bessie. Harold and Bessie were my maternal grandparents. Hi,
There was a Wallace Jonathan Gladwin who married between 1871 and 1875 a Dorothea Miles in a Registry Office in India (Ref: Prefix N/11; Vol.No.4; Folio 509; LDS Ref. 498604; IOR Ref. Z/N/11/4).

Whether this Wallace Jonathan Gladwin was your Wallace/John Gladwin, or possibly the father of yours, I don't know, but what I can advise is that there had been a Charles Gladwin in India who had married a Mary Wallace, and although I do not have definite proof at the moment, we (as a family) strongly suspect that Wallace Jonathan Gladwin was one of their children. (we have a descent via Frances Amelia Gladwin [one of Charles and Mary's children] who married John Morgans in India (Calcutta area).

Hi my gladwin is from chesterfield to but i'm totally stuck. My grandad was george gladwin he wasn't married to my grandmother elsey silcock maiden name price. My dad is 6ft tall my grandma short, there is diabetes in the family..my dad has kinda green eyes quite distinctive..this is a long shot but you never know theres nothing to loose..let us know if we have any family resemblences.

1901 - George (1878) is lodging at 15 Eaton Court, St George Hanover Square. He's single, a wood pavior (from image - a note added later says road labourer) I can't see an obvious marriage for George.

Can't see what happened to Mary Jane after 1881.

You haven't given years of birth - but there is a marriage for a Elizabeth Ellen Gladwin in Marlborough district, jan-mar 1888, vol 5a, p128 - unfortunately her partner doesn't appear.

Hmm. My Great-Grandfather Fred Arthur Thomson, Sr. (1896-1991) was the son of Arthur William Thomson (b. England, ?) and Harriet Elizabeth Gladwin (1875-1963). I have confirmed this through family sources, as well as through his SS application.

I only recently found about the connection to Alice Gladwin, via the 1881 census in England. So the Alice-Harriet connection is not confirmed, except through the information you're providing. One confirming item is the "Hattie" - she insisted on being called "Aunt Hattie", as I've been told. I have several pictures of her (and one of AWT).

Does your Harriett Gladwin have a sister named Alice? My family descends from Alice Gladwin. Alice (DOB about 1874) had a sister named Harriett.

Do you know how Harriett and Alice arrived in the US?

My Harriett Gladwin married Fred Thomsom. They lived in Chicago. She was called Hattie.

Alice Gladwin married Ferdinand N Wittmeyer. They had 2 childred Ransom Ferdinand Gladwin(B-May 11,1896) and Marion Gladwin.

Alice Gladwin divorced Ferdinand Wittmeyer in 1903 and took back her maiden name and changed the children's last name to Gladwin. Alice Gladwin later remarried Phillip Schnepf.

Ferdinand Wittmeyer is the son of Frederick G. Wittmeyer. The Wittmeyer family is pretty easy to research on the LDS website. Victor Wittmeyer brother of Frederick was the founder of the American Huguenot Society.

Harriet Elizabeth Gladwin Thomson was my 2nd Great-Grandmother. Per her US SS Application, her parents were Edwin Montague Gladwin and Mary Atkins, from London. Harriet was born 3/17/1875. I think that this Harriet and your Harriet are the same person, but I'm not certain. If you forward me your contact information, I can send more information.

Thank you, that is very interesting. I knew he was a lithographer, but mo more. There is also a rumour in our family that Rowland worked at or for the Royal Mint. Did you find out any more about the pound notes?

After a lot of searching I have made some progress with my Gladwin ancestors. Please get in touch if you think you might have a connection. William Gladwin married Ann Bass at St Brides Fleet Street London in 1795. They had 6 children. The youngest James married Jane Powis i 1833 Southwark, though the resulting 6 children were born in Hoxton or St Pancras. Their son Edward b 1843 went to Australia (Maitland in the1870s and married Ann Chapman. Children were Edgar, Amy, (married a Waring) Emily,(married Ivan Browne) Gladys,(married Kenneth Mc Millan) Edgar had son Rowland.abt1907.
Another son of james and Jane Gladwin - Henry James b 1836 went to British Guiana in the army and colonial sevice, and had several children .
William (above ) was son of Rowland Gladwin whose ancestors came from Netteswell ,Essex..Any other Gladwins with Harlow ancestors?

Hi Alison,

I came across the name while doing research on my great grandfathers life, Walter Joseph Adlam. He was a Lithographic Printer in London. My grandmother still had her fathers "indenture" paper from December, 1902. There was a family legend that he worked on some British Pound notes, so I went in search of anything on the Company that might prove this. The company he apprenticed for was Barclay & Fry. There were two witnesses on the indenture paper, a George Barwick and Rowland P. Gladwin. I was just curious, and decided to see if I could track down the two men in the 1901 census to prove they were Lithographers. I got lucky, and found both, who were certainly working for the company at the time.

George Barwick was single, age 43, a Lithographic Printer (worker) born Spitalfields London. Living on Taellis Street, Southwark in 1901, with his mother Jane Nicholl, married, age 68, born Lambeth, London.

Rowland P. Gladwin, married, age 35 working as a Lithographer, born Islington, London. His two children Dora and Frances were born in Walthamstow, Essex where they were living at 43 Lansdowne Rd. His wife Frances M. was born in Malta.

It's very rare that you can find out where a family member was working, and I thought that these two mens families might like to know this little "tidbit".

Did you have an ancestor Rowland P. Gladwin by any chance?

Rowland was born about 1866 in Islington, London. His wife's name was Frances M. age 39 in 1901, born Malta. Children in 1901... Dora E. and Frances E. Gladwin.

Rowland was a Lithographer in 1901.

I'm trying to locate information on Mary Gladwin born ~1852 in Linclons Inn Fields, Middlesex, England. She had 2 daughters. Alice B. born ~1873 and Harriett Elizabeth born ~1875. This family is listed in the 1881 census. It says Mary is a barmaid and married but I can't find any record of the marriage or husband. Alice and Harriett emigrate to the US about 1886. Day has been mentioned as a possible maiden name. Any info is greatly appreciated. I know what happen to Alice and Harriett after leaving Eng. I'm trying to get ancestor info.

Hi, Hope this enquiry is still active. I have started to search my father's tree for him. He is Bernard James Gladwin born in Norwich 1932, His father Francis J. Gladwin born in Norwich 1900, his grand-father James Gladwin born in Market Harborough 1872, his great grand-father born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire (here is the connection) 1849 but that is as far as I can go. Hello, trying to find out about a Jane Gladwin born in England.
Unfortunately I don't know her date of birth or exact birth place but i'm geussing it was somewhere in the penge area London circa 1854. She had a daughter Ada Harriett Farrow, born in 1872, it is very probable that Jane Gladwin never married Ada's father, Edward Thomas Farrow as I have since learned that at a very young age Ada was placed into The Croydon Union Workhouse and is listed as illigimate it is also recorded that Jane at the time was in prison!! Although I don't know which London prison.
Ada Harriett Farrow married John Westcombe in 1895.
Can anyone help me trace Jane Gladwin?

I'm trying to find details of Parents and Siblings of William Gladwin born in West Ham or Plaistow in about 1822.He married a Caroline from the Maldon area of Essex, born about 1835.The oldest children were born in Whitechapel and then they settled in St George in the East, London.
I have found a possible marriage in 1854, a William Gladwin married a Caroline Spurgeon in Bethnal Green.
Can anybody shed any light on these?
