There are two Robert Barclay Glasgow's, the elder was born in 1783, married Rosannah Finley and had Robert Finley Glasgow in 1820, he died in 1887 in Weldon, DeWitt County, Illinois, he married Nancy Jane Campbell, daughter of Robert Campbell and Ann Nancy Glasgow.

Robert Barclay Glasgow was born 26 Nov 1804 and did not have a child in 1820. He married first Phoebe McFall in Jan 1827; after she died in 1854, he married Matilda Jane Campbell, in 1855. He died 18 Nov 1882 in Washington County, Iowa.

The goals would be to: (as stated by the Project Cor.)

1. Collect, document, and extend Glasgow pedigrees to find common ancestors.
2. Help researchers of the Glasgow surname work together to determine whether they have shared heritage.
3. Identify the DNA of the ancestor families and compile the families and their lost branches into distinct genetic lineages through DNA matches.

There would be a cost to be tested, and we hope to have a website and/or page to give the results of the testing, if you give permission.

The cost would depend on the test that you select. We will be testing Males carrying the Glasgow name.

If you or a male family member would be interested please let us know. We are now gathering names, e-mail address, so we can send more detail information.

His Glasgow family came from around Paragould, Arkansas.
The furthest back he knows is Luther Glasgow.

I have just started working on his genealogy for him.

Leonora, I have several Roberts in my Glasgow family tree. They are a grandfather and a grandson, both born in Northern Ireland but the grandson immigrated to South Carolina. I know from my own research that there are many, MANY persons named Robert Glasgow, from many states and countries, so for anyone to answer your post helpfully we would need to know more about YOUR Robert Glasgow. Is he your grandfather? Great-Grandfather? Where was he born, and about when? If you are just starting out with research, it's best to start with the present and work back. Most people know their own parents, and maybe their grandparents, where they were born and approximately when. I generally start with census records and work back. I was fortunate enough to know my great-grandfather's name, so I was able to find him in the census in Arkansas, which is where I knew he lived. The census gave his birthplace as South Carolina, so I looked for him in South Carolina and found him in 1880, as a young man. Going back further,in 1870 he was living with his step-mother (a widow) and two half-brothers. Then I found him in 1860 when he was a baby and his father was a widow, and his grandmother was living with them. I was able to tell that his father had died between 1860 and 1870, also that his mother had died when he was a baby. Then I found the grandmother on an earlier census. That is how you do it. You go back as far as you can that way, and then when you find that information, you post it here and people will be able to help you out. Hope this helps, and I know you will enjoy researching your family!

Probably the reason you haven't received a reply is because this is the Glasgow SURNAME board, not the Glasgow, Scotland board. Perhaps there is a McShane surname board? Have you tried "Scotland's People" at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/?

I see...so the U.S. Census Records will not be of any help to you. I do seem to remember hearing of a Robert Glasgow who emigrated to the West Indies. I will have to check my records. Maybe others know of him, too. Most people with the surname GLASGOW originally came from the area of GLASGOW, Scotland. I found one record of a James GLASGOW who emigrated from Scotland to the Windward Islands in 1792. The source publication is DOBSON, DAVID, Directory of Scottish Settlers in North America, 1625-1825. His source, in turn, was the Ediburgh "Register of Deeds," 1750-1825.

When you study your ancestors from Scotland, it is helpful to know about the naming patterns they used. Usually the first born son was named for the father's father and the second born son was named for the mother's father. In my family the first born sons are named James-Robert-James-Robert, etc. The names repeat every other generation. You can read up on naming patterns on the internet; just do a search on "Scottish Naming Patterns". This has helped me a great deal. We are working on getting an DNA Glasgow project going. I'm interested in your line, since my grandmother, Laura Glasgow, wife of John Lee Glasgow lived in the Kennett, Rector Ark area. I know there are other Glasgow's buried in Clay County Ark graveyards (some in Rector Where my Grandmother is buried) , and have not found any connection to our family, but am interested in your line, and when your Glasgows arrived in this area.

I have asked for more info from family tree DNA. We would need a Group Administrator that would receive and review the results. You can use the DNA to seperate the branches of the Glasgow family using the most recent common ancestry. So someone who match with my fathers common anncestry in the last 5 genarations, would most likely be a decendent of Henry Glasgow, or John Glasgow of South Carolina, the most common ancestry of 7 genarations would be related to John Glasgow (which is as far as I can go back)

You may find that John had brothers (3 is the family story) that arrived here in the USA at the same time, and if one of these branches knows the Parents name, we can try and use this info going back one more genaration.

Who were the parents of Nannie F. Glasgow (b 1803) who married Marshall Brown Lamar Hurst (Marshall B. Hurst) in 1865? Marshall B. Hurst (1836-1909), son of Rev. John Alexander Hurst and Sarah Marshall McDonald, was born and he died in Chambers Co. AL (Fredonia community).

Nannie had a daughter Julia Hurst who married A. J. Penn, a son Nathan Hurst who married Ida Ivey, a son P. A. Hurst, and another son Rev. Henry M. Hurst. Nannie's husband Marshall B. Hurst is buried at a cemetery in Five Points community in Chambers Co. AL. Is Nannie buried at the same cemetery? What is her birthdate and death date?

Robert Sanders Glasgow was born 9-15-1843 in Marion co. Ala. He had brothers and sisters. His father was William Glasgow born abt. 1816 Kentucky or Tennesse. His mother was Nancy Jane Wright born 12-19-1818 and died 7-15-1875 and is buried in tishomingo co. mississippi in bethany church cem. The family moved from Marion co. Ala. to Tishomingo co. Miss. and then to Navarro co. Tx. Robert died Sept-22-1932 and is buried in Prairie Point Cem. Bazette, Navarro co. Tx. (Online). He was married to Sarah Catherine Underwood. It would be great to connect William and Nancy to their parents. Lots of Glasgow's but getting past them has been hard to trace. By the way some of Robert Sanders brothers went to Faxon Oklahoma. He is my husbands gr. grandfather and his son Samuel Cleveland is my husbands grandfather.

I have discovered that Robert and Nancy were married 15 Sept 1857 and the Robert's father was William GLASGOW and Nancy's father was John SLOANE.
