the glennie mystery

Could anyone help please. I am trying to track down William Glennie born about 1890-1891 in London, Chelsea I believe. His mother was Fanny Alice. Her former name was Kilsby, but I think this was a married name and not a birth name. William is on the 1901 and 1911 census with Alice as his mother. I have not found a marriage for Fanny Alice ? and John Glennie. They may not have been married, she may have been married before. If I could find William it would solve the mystery. She did (and I have details) have 3 children. James 1894, John 1897, Margaret 1900. She died Feb. 1947 as Fanny Alice Glennie.

My great grandfather was Frank Glennie son of Frank and Alice, brother to William Glennie. Frank Jr. was killed (crushed to death) at the Huron Portland Cement Plant when my grandfather (Joseph Glennie) was a toddler.

If you would like any more information on the Glennies of Alpena let me know. I grew up there and my father still lives there.

My own research has been focused on locating additional background information on my ggg grandfather Joseph Glenney, Civil War soldier, husband to Mary Jones. More to the point, their life in Canada prior to moving to Michigan.

Hi, My name is Debbie. I am a direct decentant of Joseph Glenney and Mary Jones. The Glenney name had morphed to Glennie completely by the time my grandfather Joseph William Glennie was born(1911). I grew up in Alpena, Mich. My research has hit a brick wall regarding Joseph Glenney I can't find any trace of him prior to his moving to Mich. I know he and Mary lived in Ontario but not when or where they married. Does anyone know when Joseph or his family may have moved to Canada?

You can find it here: https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/

I just ran across your old message from 2000. I hope this reaches you. While you were (still are?) looking for descendents of George Michie Glennie, I am trying to figure out the puzzle of the Glennies and Michies in Montana.

My grandfather's aunt, Mary Michie, immigrated to Harlowton in 1908 to be with her son, George M Glennie, after the death of her husband, James Glennie, in Scotland.

I have everything on her but the 1910 census as she is not in the household of her son, George M Glennie who is single and appears with brother(??) George and hired man John Glennie in the Meagher County census. Thereafter Mary (nee Michie) Glennie appears in the 1920 & 1930 Meagher Co MT census as a wife's widowed grandmother in the household of John and Mary Duncan.

Said son, George M Glennie was born 5 Jun 1870 in Insch, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and died according to the Montana death index 12 May 1917. I have not found a marriage for him.

Could this George M Glennie be, perhaps, the father of your George Michie Glennie, b. 23 Jan 1918, as it is well within the realm of possibility that he was "on the way" when his father died?

Mary Michie Glennie had a brother, Adam Michie, who immigrated to Ft. Collins, CO, in about 1886. His descendents still live in the area. Mary and Adam were aunt and uncle to my grandfather, William Michie, who immigrated in 1887 - first to Ft. Collins and then on to California.

Kind regards, Barry Michie

Hello Phil:
I will be mailing you a Glennie packet in the next day or two. You are the third Phil Glennie I know about. There is a Dr. Phil Glennie I met in Tucson about two years ago. His clan, although unconnected to ours at this point, is from Alpena, Michigan, as well. His father was Phillip Glennie (b.1907), son of William Glennie (b. 1880), who was the son of Francis "Frank" Glennie (b. 1849), who was the son of Joseph Glenney, who was married to Mary Jones, who was Irish. I think Judge Phil Glennie may be from this line. Joseph Glenney was the sheriff in Alpena at one time, according to Dr. Phil Glennie. I can send you copies of this as well.
Regards,
Rich Glennie

She lived only half an hour away, and I cannot believe I never met her. Her maiden name was McComb. You can find the notice under London Free Press Death Notices, but the actual notice is in PDF.
Rich, Thanks again: I have never seen a photograph of Alex Glennie. I have been told all of my life that I look like the Glennies, but I have never really met one (I mean with the actual surname--all of the ones who stayed here were married Glennie women with new surnames); Nellie died young, and Aunt Myrtie never had children. I would be very interested in your information. Do you have any knowledge of the Harbour Beach connection? I know the older generation here was very close to them, and to the Michigan group. If I recall hearing it correctly, George Dixon Glennie lived near International Falls? Somewhere I have the copy of my g-uncle Will Glennie's will (he was a dry goods merchant in Aylmer, Ontario), in which James B. Glennie is a witness (it's dated 1924). My guess is that this was a pretty close group. My grandmother and her sisters often talked of visiting their cousin Annie Glennie in Nova Scotia, and were very proud of the Maritimes connection. There was also a 'great-aunt Hattie' mentioned: do you know anything of her?
Regards,
Bill Acres
PS: This is an amazing site, as it could have taken me years to find all of this.

Hello again Bill:
Thanks for the clarification. My tree goes along the same lines until hitting James B. Glennie. His oldest son was named George Dixon Glennie, my grandfather (1878-1968). I'm assuming James B. was fond of his brother to give his oldest son the same name. My grandfather, George D., had six children: George L., James Alvin, Grace Lucille, Charles Everett, Peter Maule and Marjorie Eleanor Glennie. Only my Aunt Marj is still alive. My father was Peter M. Glennie (1917-1976). Have you seen a photo of old Uncle Alex Glennie? I have a few from the 1930s before he died. By the way, where do you live? I'm in Glencoe, Minn. Mine is one of the few branches of the clan that apparently came to the United States, at least that I have found to date. There is another Glennie branch in Michigan that is related going back to John Glennie and his first wife, Ann Fernie. I'd love to exchange data and compare notes. Stay in touch.
Rich Glennie

Rich, Thanks for your speedy reply. Of course, you are quite right: I knew as soon as I posted that my g-grandfather was George Dixon Glennie. We all have plots in the same cemetary and I have walked by his and Ellen Maria's grave probably a hundred times. Just for clarification (since I did not know completely until today), my line is: John G, John Glennie and Mary A Dixon, Alexander Blair Glennie, George Dixon, Wilola Glennie Acres, A. Dixon Acres, me.
I will email you. If you would like to know anything else, please just ask.
Regards,
Bill Acres
PS: We are 3rd cousins?

Hello Phil:
Spotted your message today. Thanks for the information. Your's matches with what I have. If you go one more generation back, you will see our common connection. Thomas Clinton's father, James Donald Glennie (1817-1880) was a brother to my great-great-grandfather, Alexander Bair Glennie (1811-1853). My great-grandfather James B. Glennie and another brother, John William Glennie, came to Michigan in the 1850s and 1860s. John settled in Au Sable and James in Sand (Harbor) Beach. James' oldest son, my grandfather George Dixon Glennie (1878-1968), homesteaded in northern Minnesota in the early 1900s and that's how my clan ended up in Minnesota and some of us are still here. If you are interested in sharing family information, let me know. I can send you a master list of Glennies found to date if you give me a mailing address. Always nice to find a "new" relative.
Regards,
Rich Glennie

Hello Randy:
I'm not directly related to the people you are seeking, but I know a Glennie who is related. His name is Dr. Phil Glennie, who lives in Tucson, Ariz. Some of the same names you list are in his direct family lines from the Alpena area dating back to Joseph Glennie and Mary Jones, who had sons Joseph and Francis "Frank." Frank married Alice Hanley, whose son William was married to Anna Bouchard. I have a little more information, but I do have Phil's e-mail address if you are interested. My Glennie line also comes from Michigan, but in the Harbor Beach area. I can trace my line back to the Maritimes in Canada in the 1790s. Phil and I could not find a common relation when we met last spring, but if we go back far enough, there may be common relations somewhere, probably in Scotland.

I would like to contact any descendents of John & Elizabeth Glennie who emigrated from Glenkindie, Scotland to Melrose, Wisconsin in the mid to late 1800s. John's grandparents were James G.& Agnes Murdock. My line is from Jame's son William G. (and Jean Paterson). John's brother was James G. (& Isabella Howie) who emigrated to Mass. Their son, Charles D. Glennie, was married to Eliza Glennie, sister of my grandmother (Isobel).

Dear Jeannette, Paula, & Anne. I just stumbled on this site. I may have useful info. I got into genealogy via files I inherited from my mother's sister who was secretary to Charles D. Glennie. His wife (Eliza Glennie) was my grandmother's sister. Uncle Charlie was into genealogy and wrote a booklet about the family. He said that back in the 1700's, an ancestor and his two sons worked the farm, "Rinavoan", in Glenkindie. The farm is still there. I have seen it. When the sons married, the father and one son moved to the farm, "Lockrie". This is C.D.'s line of Glennies. The other son moved to a different farm, probably in the Glenbuchat area. This is the Glennie line from which I descend. C.D. gives the names of his grandfather as John Glennie (b.19 Jul 1794) married to Ann Dawson, later to Isobel Yule. I have a second cousin in Aberdeen who is also researching our line. We have identified our g.g.grandparents as William Glennie (b. 1799). married to Jean (Jane) Paterson. We have not yet been able to positively identify earlier ancestors. It appears that William's parents are James Glennie (m. Agnes Murdock).
Many of the Glennies are buried close to each other in the graveyard at Kildrummie including William G. and Barbra Reid and John G.and Ann Dawson. The names Wiliam, Barbara, Ann and Reid are common to both lines of our Glennies. The book "Upper Donside Monumental Inscriptions" by Alastair and Margaret Beattie is very helpful. We have not yet been able to local the burial of William and Jean Glennie.
Glennie, Fife, Sct. to Nova Scotia and beyond

John Glennie married twice, had seventeen children, emigrated from Fife, Scotland to Nova Scotia 1788 and settled in the River Hebert, Minudie area of Cumberland County. My great great grandmother was one of eleven children born to his second wife Mary A. Dickson of Westmoreland, New Brunswick.

I am now concentrating on Catherine's half-siblings, children of John and first wife Ann Fernie who died ca 1797 buried Barronsfield, Cumberland Co., Nova Scotia.

Margaret b 1776, James b 1778, Isaac b 1781(Captain in the Fencibles?), John b 1785, William b 1787, all born in Fife plus their sister Jean b 1783, who died 1784 and is buried Scotland.

Two more children were born to the couple after arrival in N.S.-Annie b 1789 and Douglas Charles/Charles Douglas b 1791.

While some of these remained in Nova Scotia, married and unmarried, a number moved to Ontario, to New Brunswick (Westmoreland and Midgic area at least) some western Canada and with second and third generation into the U.S.

I have initial record for John's christening in Scotland and cemetery confirmation of his parents' burial. His father was given as John Glenny (there were three spelling variations in records from 1690 to 1881) GROS record 1715.

Because the offspring in turn had large families, many of the Glennie names in Elgin County for example are connected even with spelling variations.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who believes they trace through this line to John and Margaret Smith Glennie of Fife. John and Margaret Glennie had a son James whose descendants reside outside Canada. A daughter Jean Leslie Glennie christened Fife, died there 1849, apparently unmarried. Two sons William and Andrew remained in Scotland, their death dates I haven't located in parish records yet.

Looking for intermarriages with surnames Rice, Card, Foster, Brine, Richardson, Carrol and others.

Since first posting this message in 1999, I thought it is time for an update. My Glennies have been traced to John Glenie, 1715-1800, in Leslie, Aberdeen, Scotland. He married Margaret Smith and had five children, two of whom (James Glenie, 1750-1817, and John Glennie, 1855-1839) came to Nova Scotia. From John and his two wives (Ann Fernie and Mary A. Dickson) came 17 children. My clan comes from the second marriage and their son, Alexander Blair Glennie (1811-1853). He married Elizabeth Conners, and one of their children was James B. Glennie (1846-1924), my great-grandfather. I am now trying to push the family search back further in Scotland and would like to know more about John Glenie from Rayne, Scotland. Any help would be appreciated. By the way the Glennie name was changed from one 'n' to two 'ns' when John Glennie came to Canada.

Montana Glennie - Michie links

Debra:

Just found your message of 4 years ago. You may be able to solve a "mystery" in that family lore of a collateral Michie family of mine says that an "Annie Michie", married to a Glennie in Scotland, came to the US after being widowed to be with her son near Helena, Montana. I can find no Annie Glennie in the census and other materials, but said Annie did have a sister "May" or "Mary" and a Mary Glennie shows up in the Montana records in the same district with George Glennie and in the household of a John Duncan in the 1930 census as a grandmother, having immigrated in 1908. A Montana death record in 1932 for a Mary Glennie fits Mary Michie's age to a tee, but is 2 years off for her sister Annie.

Both these women are daughters of William Michie (1800-1891) and Mary Grant - of Banffshire - and sisters of my ancestor, John Michie (1841-1917), and Adam Michie (1856-1944) who immigrated to Ft Collins, CO, in 1887 and from whose descendents I have heard this story.

Am just interested in trying to nail down some information on the Michie-Glenning connection - whether it was Annie or May/Mary Michie who married a James Glenning in Scotland and then came to Montana much later in life.

Regards, Barry Michie

I can run off a copy and send it if you can give me a mailing address. By the way, Nellie and Wilola are not the daughters of James B. Most of what you wrote is new information for me. It is exciting to say the least. I have been in touch with Gordon Seabrook as well as other relatives from other Glennie branches.
These message boards are indeed great. As to the Harbor Beach Glennies, I knew them fairly well. There was Christine, Mabel and Robert Glennie, who all lived together for many years. Mabel and Christine died in 1972 and Bob died in Tucson, Ariz., where a lived for awhile with another brother, Dr. Blair Alexander Glennie, a dentist who died in 1980. For some reason, my grandfather George D., who was ornery, never told his kids about his family, so it has been a struggle piecing things together. Have you been in contact with Diane Sibley in Nova Scotia or Don and Glenna Hanson in St. Thomas? All are direct relatives and active in the family search. I also ran into a Donald Glennie in Winnipeg who is a direct relation as well. If you need their e-mail addresses, let me know. Thanks for giving me a shot of adrenelin after several months of little activity on the family search. Send me a mailing address, and I'll bundle up some information for you.
Rich Glennie

Hi Bill:
Just rereading your messages from yesterday. Noticed the reference to Hattie. I have 1890-91 letters that Alex Glennie wrote back home to Michigan while he was riding with the U.S. 7th Cavalry. He made a reference to Dix and Hattie among other family members. After researching it further, Dix turned out to be his uncle and your George Dixon Glennie. Hattie, meanwhile, is likely Minerva Hopkins Mooney, wife of John William Glennie (1837-1880). John W. was the oldest son of Alexander Blair Glennie. He was a distinguished businessman and banker in the Au Sable, Mich., area when he was killed by a cannon explosion while in the middle of a rescue attempt of a stranded Great Lakes ship crew in 1880. I have some additional details of that family as well. It was interesting to note your g-uncle Will's will and the 1924 date. That is the year James B. Glennie died, on Dec. 22 in Lakewood, Ohio, while visiting with his brother Alex, who resided there. Alex died in 1938 in Ohio. I'd love to get any additional information on your branch of the family.
Regards,
Rich Glennie
I am descended from John Riach and Janet Glennie of Towie via their daughter Barbara who married James Coutts. James and Barbara had a daughter Jane (christened Jean) who married Harry Kellas. Harry and Jane's son James was my grandfather who migrated to Australia in 1911. Would love to hear from anyone with shared ancestors.

Dear Anne

I see you posted a couple of replies to Paula who was in turn replying to my posting. I am of the same line as Paula, i.e. John Riach/Janet Glennie. I think Paula is right about Janet's parents being William Glennie & Barbara Reid because she had children William and Barbara as well as others. I am descended from Barbara Riach. Anyway, love to hear from you if you find a connection to us.

Regards
Jeanette Dall

Dear Norman
Great to hear from you. I am descended from Barbara Riach (b. c 1799) who, from her death cert, was the child of John Riach and Janet Glennie. No certificates back further, but my guess is that my Janet Glennie was the child of William and Barbara Reid, based on the following:
The IGI has a Janet Glennie born 1770 to William Glennie and Barbara Reid in the parish of Towie where my Barbara Riach lived; and as well as my Barbara, she also had a child William, presumably both named after her parents.
(Barbara Riach married James Coutts who farmed Tinnaboth in the parish of Towie, their daughter Jean/Jane was my great-grandmother).

Two things – do you know where Kildrummie graveyard is in relation to the old parish of Towie? and
Could you let me have the MI for William Glennie and Barbara Reid? I keep meaning to buy the booklet and will get round to it one day but would love to check this out straight away.
Any more info you have on William Glennie & Barabara Reid would be much appreciated. Have you connected them to your Glenkindie and Glenbuchat Glennies?
Cheers
Jeanette
