I just found this post through my search for info on the Glovier family. My grandmother is a Glovier from southeast VA. I would love to have whatever information you can share on the Glovier family. I'd like to hear more about our French ancestry. Other sites have traced Gloviers to Scotland via Northern Ireland.
Thanks!

Gloviers in 18th c. Northern Virginia

Since my last posting here some years ago, I've done a great deal of further research and a DNA test. From what I can tell, there is one of those strange coincidences that is counterintuitive. The Gloviers from southwest Virginia, who are from Alsace-Lorraine, are not at all related to the Gloviers of northern Virginia, who were of Scottish descent. The northern Virginia name was usually Anglicized to Glover sometime during the middle of the 19th century. My website www.glover-glovier.com traces them. This is a bit confusing, but true. It's interesting that some of my Scottish Glovers settled as far south in the Shenandoah Valley as Augusta County, not far north of where some of the Alsace-Lorraine Gloviers settled. Some of mine kept the spelling Glovier, but they're clearly of Scottish descent. jd-glover@comcast.net

David,

I also have the history that Lois Hagan has as well as the history compled by Laura Glovier and Suzanne Meredith. I have used all three including what I myself have found . There is not much recorded on the Glovier family. However I did find a Michael Glovier who took the oath of allegience in Montgomery Co Va.
At one time I had all three references on my geneelogy program but lost it. I do have a paper copy that I need to reenter on my computer program.
I will be happy to share however there is probably nothing new that you don't already have.

Your Cousin
Charleen

Hi Doug,

I would be very interested in the Glovier History from the Dallas gentleman.

Strangely enough, when I was in the military at San Antonio in 1978, a man once asked me if I knew the Gloviers in Dallas, but I never heard of them until now.

My family history is that Great Grandfather Jasper Glovier moved to Pennsylvania from Roanoke, Virginia. Once when I was passing through Roanoke, I called some of the Gloviers in the phone book and was directed to my Great Aunt, Lois.

She has sent me a copy of the extensive research she has collected over the years. My Grandfather Rutherford C. Glovier and my Uncle John have also compiled a family history.

David R. Glovier
Originally from Freeport, PA, son of Robert E.
Mr. Jay Glover,

Sorry, but my family history does not indicate any blood relationship between the Glovers and the Gloviers. I saw a similar website and replied to the author with the following:
The oral history is that two brothers named Glovier, from the Alsace-Loraine area of France, arrived in America by ship in 1740.

I also contacted a Bill Glovier in North Carolina that told of the oral history of his family that confirmed the same story.

My Family Crest is very different from the one on the www.glover-glovier.com website.

My family history is that Great Grandfather Jasper Glovier moved to Pennsylvania from Roanoke, Virginia. I also contacted a Bill Glovier in North Carolina that told of the oral history of his family that confirmed the same story.

The oral history is that two brothers named Glovier, from the Alsace-Loraine area of France, arrived in America by ship in 1740.

My family history is that Great Grandfather Jasper Glovier moved to Pennsylvania from Roanoke, Virginia.
I am a descendant of Legrand Glovier (as he is listed in census records) of Linville VBirginia. I would be very interested in the Glovier genealogy. I have corresponded with Jay Denis Glover, who has made a previous posting, and is descended from a different branch of the same family. My great-grandfather was Americus, grandson of Benjamin Glover and Dorcas Alexander Glover. My name is Stephen Charles Glover.

The correct spelling of the ancestral home was Alsace Lorraine. One family member, in the JT Glovier line, from Maryland has record of having gone there during WWII and finding gravestones and other evidence of the Glovier family having been residents.

I am wife to Malcolm Abernathy Glovier, son of Montezuma (Mont) and grandson of George Garman from Radford, VA. We and our sons, James Mont, George Garman reside on the Eastern Shore of Md and son,Thomas Floyd who resides in Charleston, SC, Our daughter, Susan Glovier Cook lives in Pulaski VA and attended a Meredith/Glovier reunion at in Radford, Va June 23.
Dear Dawn,
William and Ida (Trent) Glovier were my great-grandparents. The hub of our branch of the family is mostly based in southwestern Virginia. If I'm not mistaken William and Ida originally came from Hot Springs, Virginia. When they moved down to the coalfields mostly in Russell County they built a home and raised their family. We still have family reunions at the old homeplace where the remnants of the house can still be seen. There is also a large family cemetary on the estate. I've known all of William and Ida's children which are my great aunts and uncles. Several of them are no longer with us but my grandfather (Rev. Walter Howard Glovier) is still very much alive. Most of my grandfather's brothers and sisters have always really been into our ancestry and they have volumes of information and pictures. My grandfather is now 86 and for the most part still has a good memory. I will talk to him or my dad and see if we can't hook you up with the information. I know one of my cousins that lives in Rockford, Illinois has about the best written history.

Yes, I believe there an excellent chance of a connection. My mother(a Glovier) has been in contact with a man who has sent her a very extensive genealogy of the Glovier line. Included is a Jacob Clifford Glovier who married a Mary Lucinda Nay, July 28,1885 in Kansas, IL. Their children were William Derrick, Bertha Lucinda, Clifford Ashby, Walter Alden, Nettie Ethel, Lille May, Dora Ineze & Luther Edgar. There is alot more, which is of course too long to include. We may not be of the same branch of the family though. Let me know what you think. Karen

My great-great grandfather was Benjamin Glover of Linville, Virginia (Rockingham County). I believe his father's name was Richard (probably originally from Culpepper area). Benjamin had 13 children, of which 7 were boys. Half of his family (4 of the boys) used "Glovier"; the other half used "Glover." I knew both. I was told there was an argument in the family in the middle of the 19th century, and some of them put the "i" in, but I doubt that is correct. The Civil War records list them both ways. I have various records. If the Glover/Gloviers were from Alsace-Lorraine and were Dunkards (as this page implies), that would explain their intermarriage with other Anabaptists.

JDG
