Hi Cindy, thanks for the info and questions. My Smelser (Smelzer / Smeltzer) family was in Hart County, Munfordville, KY in 1820 near Horse Cave ... Mammoth Caves. But, they must have move shortly there-after to Crawford County, IN ... I would guess about 1822 since the last son, David Clark Smelser, was born in either 1821 or 1822 in KY ... we haven't figured out exactly when. We believe they were associated with the Sturgeon family as we find Sturgeon's in Hart County and later married to Perry Smelser in Crawford County IN. I'll have to check further on Williams ... no specific name comes to mind off the top of my head. We do have the Peckinpaugh connection. George Smelser is living with the Peckinpaughs in Warren County IL and we believe his sister is married to Peckinpaugh .... but that's not proven. We do have Smelser's who moved into the Keokuk area but haven't connected them to our line yet. They changed the spelling of their name to Smeltser .... and their direct genealogy goes back to VA and not KY best we can figure at the moment. Not sure where they were at in 1810 .... Casey County is a possibility. We believe that they were in Overton TN in the late 1790's to the early 1800's ... maybe 1805 or so. We have Smelser's with likely connections to this same family near Nashville and also what we believe to be another Smelser with trading / speculation connections in New Orleans in that same time period. The Goad connection is as indicated elsewhere .... by association only at the moment. Proximity and links to others like Sevier, Peckinpaugh, State of Franklin .. probably the Watuga Association. There's something here that we might be able to work out. This Smelser family was right on the edge of the frontier ... often in advance of it ... since the 1700's. Looks like we were involved in blacksmithing, wagon building and repair, wheelsmithing, trading, hunting, some land speculation, gunpowder prodcution and mining.

Hi John,

Where was your Smeltzer in 1820? Gabriel Goad & James Williams were both enumerated in Perry Cnty, IN in 1820. In 1810 they are both in Casey Cnty, KY. I can't find any Smelzer marriages in the Williams bunch. James' dau Sarah/Sally was Gabriel Goad's second wife, but they had no children. James Williams' son, John U. married Gabriel's dau, Mary.

A number of James Williams offspring ended up in Knox or Warren Counties in IL, usually via Vermillion Cnty, IN. Namely, Rachel H. Williams w/o Solomon Peckenpaugh. She died in Knox Cnty in Nov of 1900 at over 90 having outlived her two sons and dau-in-law. James D. Williams, one of James' sons, married Ruth Peckenpaugh. They can be found in Vermillion Cnty, IN and then in Keokuk Cnty, IA (1850 as Douglass Williams), along with James D.'s brother, Thomas T. Williams. I haven't found a connex to Knox or Warren Counties with either James D. or Thomas T. James D. ended up in KS and Thomas T. died in Keokuk. James William's grandson, Benj. Humphrey and Gabriel Goad's granddau Mary/Polly Williams Humphrey are enumerated in 1850 in Knox county in the thick of the Peckinpaughs, however by 1860 they are in northern MO, Putnam County to be specific. If there's any overlap with your Smelzers, please let me know. Good luck. Cindy

William Goad, brother of Gabriel, did fight at Kings Mt. and received bounty land in E. Tenn. (then N.Car) from the State of N.Car. He was in Watauga before his parents and stayed after the rest of the family left E. Tenn. as he was richer. His first wife was Betsy Morrison, daugter of {atrick Morrison, also from Piittsylvania County and Watauga and a Kings Mt vet.

- Ken
Gabriel Goad was born in Pittsylvnia County, Va ca 1775 and went to Sullivan County, Tenn (then N.Car.) ca 1782 with his father John Goad. As a young man, Gabriel moved to Ky (Lincoln/Casey counties) and by ca 1820 to Perry County, Ind in the part that became Crawford.

He is said to have married Sarah Williams. daughter of James Williams, 14 Jan 1803, in Lincoln County, Ky. I do not think this was the end of the Goad/Williams marriages but we do not know of all the marriages of Gabriel's many grandchildren.

- Ken
I believe you have solved a problem for me. My grandfather, Charles Alexander Goad, Sr's father has been a bit of a mystery. His father left the family, as we understood, to the carribean and begin a rubber manufacturing plant. I believe given Mary Elizabeth's name that we have the same link with Lawrence and that our story to the carribean may have been miscontrued. I believe my grandfather was born on September 9, 1905 ish. His wife was Marie (marretta) Goad. does this link with your line?

Just checking to see if anyone in this thread is still active in Goad research. I have my Jacob Smelser living next to Gabriel Goad and family in 1830 Crawford County and the path of the Smelser family is also TN to KY to IN ... and later into IL and IA. However, some of the family goes the path of TN to IL to MO to TX. Associated families with Smelser include Peckinpaugh and Rice ... so there does seem to be some association. Both Peckinpaugh and Rice are found associated with Smelser in Illinois in the Galesburg, Knox County and Warren County areas. Some Smelser family members are buried in the Rice-Blue cemetery near Galesburg. Would love to continue following this trail.
Hi Ken ... thanks. Well, they are neighbors in 1830 Crawford County. And, they signed the Petition for the State of Franklin. And, they moved from TN to KY to IN at just about the same time .... maybe together. And both families were directly associated with Gen John Sevier and likely both families fought at Kings Mountain. But, no marriages that we have been able to document.
