Gobbell's of Wayne County, TN

I am helping my partner research his family tree. I thank all of you that have information that is available for public view as that has helped me immensely with this research.

I have a problem, however. I have a hand written account that was converted to an email by a son/grandson, but the original account was written based on a minimal amount of formal education on April 13, 1950. The person that wrote the original account was Joseph Edward Gobbell, Sr (b. 20 Aug 1893) who was married to Clara Hooks.

His account shows that his father was Isaac Harrison Gobbell (b. 2 Dec 1833), son of John Gobbell (b. cir. 1778).

This account indicates that John Gobbell was born in 1778 in Germany (Girmnie) and that he immigrated to the United States in 1800 and landed in New York. He stayed there for 2 years and then moved to the Dayton, Ohio area where he married Martha Short (Marthey Shote) of Allen in 1814. The record further states that they lived in Ohio until about 1844 when they followed the railroad construction work to the Cumberland Tunnel in Tennessee near Nashville. The family eventually moved to Wayne County, TN and settled on a farm at the head of Fort Eight Creek where John Gobbell died in 1875.

Through all of my research, I don't find any record where John married Ruhamy Maner. I also find no record that indicates that he was born or spent any time in North Carolina. Basically my research dead ends at a John Gobbell that I can't find and without being able to show that he did marry Ruhamy Maner, I do not want to accept this as the norm if it is not factual.

Can someone help us with this dilemma or give me some form of factual back up that shows this is the correct lineage? Please email me directly at cLanton923 (at sign) yahoo (dot) com.

Thanks,
Philip Weathers and Robert King

Jo,
I know its been a long time since you posted this message, but I am hoping you can give me a little information about the Gobbels. My Great, Great, Grandfather's name was Absolom Gobble. It appears that he came from Rowan County N.C. to Orange County in Indiana around 1827-1830. He was born
in 1795-96. You mentioned an Absolom as one of the children belonging to John Gobbel (1753-1827). Do you have any other information on the Absolom you have listed? My Absolom was married to a Betsy (or Bersey or Besty?) Miller. I'm trying to figure out if the Absolom you have listed is my relative.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Alan Lytle

I too am descended from the Gobbel's of Rowan and have the book authored by Luther. His and my branch split about 2
generations ago.
My Grandfather was Henry Gobbel and fought in the civil war.
I have his diary and can't find out what unit he served with.
The unit that I am told he served with can't be found, so I feel
there has been an error.
If anyone would like to communicate with me, please do so. I think that we are all related.
donwood@zebra.net

Gobbel

My g-grandfather was Thomas Wiley Gobbel, b.1873 Wayne Cty, TN. His father was William Allen Gobbel. Thomas married Martha Emmert (also of German ancestry) of Lawrence Cty. in 1899 after which they moved to Texas along with her parents. I have a letter written by a different Wm Gobbel in 1960 to my g-uncle Clarence Gobbel in which he recited his lineage same as yours (Jacob, John and Ruhamy, etc.) He lists all the children of John and Ruhamy, including James Riley but has nothing further on him. He descended from James' brother Isaac Harrison his grandfather). I have no idea whether this man is still living but his address at the time was in Truman, AR. Don't know if this is a lead for you or not. By the way, do you have any knowledge of my Gobbels? I can't connect them with any of the other Gobbels in Wayne County but surely there must be one. By the way - how do you say your name? My grandmother pronounced it like the noise the turkey makes. I suppose that would make sense if it was once Gabel. Any help would be appreciated.
Gary Caughey, Arlington, TX.

Thanks Jo for your response. I have recently discovered with the help of Harold Gobbel that I am descended from Edward W. Gobbel, one of the sons of John and Ruhamy Gobbell of Wayne County, TN. I knew there had to be a connection. Not that common a name. I guess that makes you and I cousins at some level. I'm fairly new to this game and somewhat ignorant but I'm enjoying each new discovery. I assume this implies that my line goes back from TX (Dallas/Ft.Worth) to TN to NC to Philly and The Rhineland of Germany. Fascinating! Thanks for your explanation of the name. In Texas we have the TN as well as the NC pronounciation. My Grandmother Caughey (Gobbel) always said her name was Gob-bel whereas my great-aunt (by marriage) insisted it had to be Goble, as in George. Sounds like they're both correct. Is there a way I could get my hands on a copy of the Luther Gobbel book?

My grandmother Florence was one of Thomas W. Gobbel's children. I am thrilled to find a connection as I was only guessing that William A. was Thomas W.'s father. I knew most of his children and grandchildren. All the children are gone now but many of the grandchildren are still with us, including my dad. I would be happy to share anything I know or can find out from my dad about the previous generation. I look fwd. to hearing from you.

Jo, the practice of using the same names generation after generation makes for "interesting" research doesn't it. My wife and I have researched the Gobbel line for several years also. Luther Gobbel's books are our primary source also for early info. Cary Anderson' research work which is quoted by Luther has helped some. Also a work by George and Betty Gibson, "Ancestry of the Goble Family". Our info agrees I think based upon our reading of these sources. I left Johann Phillip, Johann Frederick's brother, out since he was not my line of descent. According to my understanding Johann Nicholas is referred to by Luther as John Sr., a brother to Jacob Sr., both son's of Johann Frederick. Jo, I'm getting dizzy! You're right, Jacob's son John is my line and Godfrey is yours. Luther was a professor at Lambeth College in Jackson, Tn. and there is a library named in honor of him there. I have a large file from "my" John Gobbel to the present. I don't have anything earlier than you. Hope to get your address some way and continue our dialogue.
Gary, I live among all the Gobbel's that remained in Wayne and Lawrence Co., Tn. In the 1820 Tn. census, John Gobbel was the only Gobbel listed in Tn. He and his wife Ruhamy Maner Gobbel lived in Bedford Co., Tn. About 1852-3 they moved their family to Wayne Co. Tn. Near the Lawrence Co. line. They had eleven children. One of them was Edward Wiley who had six children. One of them was William Allen who had six children. One of them was Thomas W. Thomas W. had eight children. Wondering which one of them you descended through. Oddly, none of the descendants of John Gobbel in these parts spell Gobbel that way. There are three spelling used. They are Gobble, Gobbell and Gobell. They all descended through John. We locally pronounce it like the turkey noise. I can help you with your connection. I will contact you.
Harold

I sent an email to that address asking for confirmation that I was right or wrong. Have not heard yet. I guess that's not unusual since you folks have been replying to my post for months on this site before you got a reply from me. If one is chasing as many leads as I am, one (me, 'grin') may forget where they have posted. When you read this, I'm sure you can find me on the net. Matter of fact considering today's technology, I'm a bit puzzled by the secrecy pledge by the site for email addresses but "When in Rome...." .
Hi Cary,

Well about that book.... I used to have Luther's daughter's name and address. She is who I bought the books from, but I have no idea where I might find that right now. Let me have a while to look and I might be able to locate it. I do know that the call number for the film of the book is 0982194#9 and 1321130#6 in the Geneaological Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Salt Lake City. If you can find the closest church to you that has the geneaological library, they will be able to order it for you. The books themselves I think are out of print, but you might be able to find a copy to copy at Duke University (the last place he worked.) I know from another email from another cousin that he also worked in a university in Tennessee, but I can't remember which one. If you check the other messages on this board, you might come up with that. Then, they may have a copy of his books as well. I'm afraid that's about all I can do to help right now. If I find Rachel's address (his daughter) I'll send that to you and you can write her.

Isn't this fun?

Jo

Hi, Cary,

Sorry it's so late in coming, but I don't really have any information, except for pronunciation. Over here in NC, SC and MD we pronounce it Go bell, but with more emphasis on the Go than the bell, if you know what I mean. Actually, just like the actor George Gobel used to pronounce his. And we all pretty much spell it GOBBEL, although I know some of the NC family spells theirs with one b. Interesting, huh?

Jo G. Counts

Hello, Harold,

What's even more interesting is that hundreds of years later, the Gobbels are still using the same names. I happen to have a brother named Harold Gobbel!

At any rate, my information goes along with yours, except for the variations in the spelling, from Johann Jacob, Johann Frederick, but then I have a Johann Phillip instead of Nicolas. At any rate, I guess it makes no difference to me, because my family descends from the Johann Frederick, but I would like to know where you got your information. Mine came from the books of Luther Gobbel, The Gobbel Family of Rowan.

Most of the info appears to be the same, so I was curious. I understand that they came to this country from Germany aboard the Samuel in 1739, through Philadelphia, but I've not checked any passenger lists myself. I'm also interested to know if you have documented the spelling of Gable somehow.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Jo Gobbel Counts
(My name was not used by any of the ancestors!)
Hi, Pam,

I have some information, but need to know the date of Fannie's birth. I have one "Fannie" born in 1897, the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Gobbel (1874-1961) and Henry W. Conner (1856-1914). Mary Elizabeth is the daughter of Henry C. Gobbel (1814-1916) and Margaret Caroline Davis (ABOUT 1840-ABOUT 1915), who are also my great-grandparents.

There is also a Laura Frances Gobbel (born 1864) also known as "Fannie", who is the daughter of Godfrey Gobbel (1802-1870) and Unnamed McCullough (born about 1809 - no date of death listed). This particular Fannie is said to have married a Goshen McCullock, but I have no more information on her.

If neither of these appears to be the correct person, maybe you could send me her date of birth and I'll look through the books to see if I can find another name that matches.

If one does match, please let me know and give me your information, if you don't mind, so I can update the family records and tree. Thanks a lot for your reply.

Happy Hunting!

Jo

James Riley Gobbel

Dear Harold,

Sorry I don't really have information on who your James Riley could have married, but I do have a book that also shows Wayne Co. Tennessee as where John and Ruhamy lived. So, not knowing the geography of the area, you might could search the records of Wayne County. I show him in my records as being the 5th son of John and Ruhamy (with no date of birth.) But the 7th son was born in 1833. My information also says that Isaac was born in Bedford Co. and that all but the 3 oldest were also born in Bedford County. Isaac fought in the Civil War, and possibly your James Riley did as well - so there may be records there.

I have a great copy of some books on "The Gobbel Family of Rowan" by a deceased cousin, Luther L. Gobbel - although I'm afraid it doesn't have much on your James Riley. Good luck in your search. If I could help in any other way, would be happy to.

I've been researching the Gobbel family now for several years. Our lines apparently coincide until Jacob. Then, my line branches off of Godfrey, through Henry Charles, Henry Luther, and finally my Dad, Henry Roy. I've had a lot of fun, and would really like to find out who the family is in Germany. Would you happen to have any of that information? I'd be interested in receiving it if so.

Good hunting!

Jo Counts

Nicholas and Daniel Goebel/Gabel

First name of Nicholas was Johann. Johann Nicholas was the son of Johann Fredrick who was the son of Johann Jacob b. 1670 in Germany. They are all in my lineage. They repeated the same names in different combinations for future generations. This makes research very interesting. Will exchange info with those interested.

My brickwall is who did James Riley Gobbell marry probably about 1850, most likely in Bedford Co., Tn. or nearby.
