From "History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 756.

City of La Crosse

WILLIAM GOBEL, of the firm of Hoff & Gobel, contractors and builders; was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1831. His father, Jeremiah Gobel, was a native of Ohio, and his mother, whose maiden name was Hannah Moore, was born on a farm where the city of Cincinnati now stands. Mr. Gobel learned the carpenter's trade of his father; came to La Crosse in 1857, and has resided here since, except three years in Cincinnati - from 1858 to 1862 - settling up his father's estate. He was married in Cincinnati, in 1854, to Miss Mary Harrison, and has two children living - Mary and Elizabeth; lost one son, Jeremiah, who died in 1865, aged 6 years. Mr. Goble has worked at the carpenter's trade ever since he came to La Crosse, and has been contracting since 1873. The present partnership was formed in January, 1877.

[I am not related to this family and have no further information. I'm posting this as a service and hope it helps!]

FOLLOWUP with appreciation to the Mass Historical Society

Our copy of the Sewall Diary (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1973) contains a reference to the Goble executions on page 22 (entry date September 22, 1676). His mention of Goble is simply "Stephen Goble of Concord, was executed for murder of Indians." A footnote reads "Stephen and Daniel Goble had killed three friendly Indians. Daniel was executed the 26th." In his entry for 9/26, Sewall writes "... Daniel Goble is drawn in a Cart upon bed cloaths to Execution."

Hope this is of use.

Best,
Jeremy B.
John White and Elizabeth Goble: Goble/Gobel Executions Massachusetts Bay Colony

Samuel Sewall's Diary was originally published as a 3 volume set. It was abridged and published in edited version in 1927.

DOES ANYONE HERE HAVE ACCESS TO THE UNABRIDGED VERSION?

The current version does not mention the execution of Daniel and Thomas Goble, sons of Thomas and Alice Brookman Goble circa 1676.

20 years ago I read a passage in a puritan era diary about the Goble executions, which mentioned that a man named White was brought to This execution in his bed. In a White genealogy researched in 1927, the genealogist found that White's young sons had been indentured to cover debts, some Whites had been killed by indians, and some had been killed for killing indians. John White m. Elizabeth Goble, daughter of Thomas and Alice Brookman Goble.

The reference and photo copy of that excerpt was lost in the great midwest flood of 1993, and I have been unable to find it again. My memory indicates the reference may have been in diary form, the author always receiving or handing out gloves associated with pallbearing...greater detail than I found in the abridged version of Samuel Sewall's diary. It is possible that funerals attended to by Sewall were part of what was edited out...and just as possible that I have not yet found the source for the notes on the Goble Execution.

If this passage seems familiar to you, or if you have access to the original unabridged version of Sewall's Diary, I would appreciate any assistance you can offer in locating the account.

Thanks!
Do you know her parents names, where and when she was born? My g-grandfather was Orville Clow, and his younger sister was Emma, a twin to Ella. They were born in Minnesota, possibly Blue Earth Co., as that is where Orville was born. No one seems to know what happened to her. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sharon Goreham

Evelyn, Thank you for getting back to me on query. i already have this site as a favorite as a gal from Denver is thru Goble. My husband is thru Goble. One reason i posted thru Goble , I was trying to see if any one had any information on a Levi Perry Gibson that married Andrew Goble's sister Elizabeth. I think I put that in 1870 Census they were living close together in Daviess County, Missouri, then Andrew went over into Richardson Co. Ne. I was hoping to find out if Elizabeth and Levi followed and if that is where Levi died as they don't know for sure. The search goes on!!!!!
Thanks again. Janie Pine

Pat: Data that I have indicates a large number of decendents from John Rubin Goble (Raper) in the Polk Co., TN area. Data does show that he drowned in the Ocoee River in Polk Co., TN in 1912 ( would have to look up the exact date in my office). Very doubtful if he and "Fate" Goble were one and the same due to "Fate" having lived and being buried in Ala. All of the data that I have does indicate that both have roots to the same area.
James Lafayette "Fate" Goble

Just a passing thought!!! Possibility!! Jasper Lafayette "Fate" Raper had a son (John Rubin (Goble) Raper by Mary Lovina Goble in Dec. 1866 ater marrying her in Feb. 1866. Jasper L. had returned to Talking Rock, Gilmer Co. GA after being discharged from the Army in July, 1865. Possiblity?? There could have been a relationship with Mary L. Goble prior to him going to war in Nov. 1864. It appears that James Lafayette "Fate" Goble was born in July 1864. If this was the case then this could be why there is statements as to him being raised an ophan and a shroud of mystery about his life due to the fact that these kind of things were kept as quite as possible during those day. ??????

Your passing thought is a good one and certainly is a possibility. Here's another supposition. Is there any chance that John Rubin Goble/Raper and James Lafayette "Fate" Goble are one and the same?

Does anyone know what happened to John Rubin Goble or Raper? Can he be traced? Did he live to be an adult? Did he marry and have children?

It has been said that James Lafayette "Fate" Goble's birth and life are shrouded in mystery and that he was raised an orphan. An extensive search for him in the 1870 and 1880 census records have so far come up with nothing. Surely he would have been in one census or the other!

Pat

Thanks, William, that's what I needed to know. So that lets out that theory.

Yes, James L. "Fate" outlived two wives and died in Alabama.
I find him on the 1900 census but none before that.

Pat
Yes, if only! <sigh>

One researcher GAVE James L. "Fate" Goble some parents and other "researchers" have picked up on this unfounded claim and now many trees on the Internet show [as fact] that James L. "Fate" Goble was a child of Cornelius Goble and Ellen Wooten. If anyone can show any proof of this, I welcome it. Until then, I do not believe it is true for the following reasons:

1. After Cornelius died, Ellen married Jesse. G. Shankle(s). They raised Ellen's daughter by Cornelius [Susan], and Jesse's son [William] by his first wife, along with the six children that they had together. Why would they keep two children from their previous marriages and give away the third [Fate] to be raised as an orphan? It doesn't make sense.

2. Cornelius and Ellen [also Jesse Shankle and his first wife] were living in Alabama in the 1860 census. Cornelius and Jesse joined Malone's 9th Alabama during the Civil War. It is believed that Cornelius was killed in the war. Most sketches of Fate, as well as the 1900 census, say he was born in Georgia. Ellen and her second husband Jesse G. Shankle, whom she married about 1866, are in the 1870 Alabama census. It doesn't appear that Ellen ever went back to Georgia.

3. In the 1970s my great aunt listed the names of her father's brothers and sisters. Susan and William were on the list as half sister and half brother to the rest. James L. Fate Goble was not on the list. If he had been her father's brother surely she would have known. They all lived in the same area of AL.

4. The man who first listed Fate as the child of Cornelius Goble and Ellen Wooten in the beginning said it was speculation.

If anyone has any information either pro or con on the above people or situation PLEASE let us know.

Pat

Jacob GOBEL/Goebel, 1799-1846, Gellershausen and Bringhausen, Germany

I am researching the family of Jacob GOEBEL, born 27 May 1799 in Gellershausen, the son of Jacob Gobel and Barbara Catherine (Wiesemann), and his wife Sophie (Rabe). Children were:
Carl Heinrich, 1823-1896;
Catherine Elisabeth, born 1825;
Johann Jacob, b. 1827;
Johann Henrich Friedrich, born 25 April 1831 (came to America); Carl Christian Wilhelm, born 6 Oct 1833 (who I believe to be my ancestor);
Johann Carl William, born 1836;
Philipp Daniel, b. 1839 (also emigrated);
Caroline Dorothee Wilhelmine, 1842-1854
Carl Henrich Ludwig, 1847-1848

Am interested to correspond with others related to this Lutheran family. (Carl Christian, Johann Henrich and Philipp Daniel came to Cincinnati, Ohio area and then to Campbell and Kenton counties, Kentucky. Carl Christian Wilhelm Goebel served in the Civil War)
Thank you. hlgoebel@yahoo.com
