ROY, I haven't used Monique for any research information. I don't know her, so I don't know of her accuracy. Much of my information comes from my Father's and Grandfather's research as well as my family research and our contacts. I don't what or where you acquired your research information of the Caquelin/ Gockley, but would interested in sharing my info with you and vice versa. gock_2000@yahoo.com is my e-mail address should you wish to share information conduits.
I believe Wayne Reed and my lineage involve several female lines.
Nicholas Caquelin's father was not Jacobin. I will get his parents name to you. John Gockley fought in the Revoluntionary War. I have a newspaper article in which my Grandfather had a new headstone commissioned for John Gockley depicting his war service.

Larry
Larry, I understand the frustration of trying to get the information out of Monique's writing. I had 1 year of French in college! I trust her knowledge of European history but she does have my gggmother marrying her own son!
I'm glad that you are still involved with this. Do you know whether Wayne Reed is still interested. His email from 2000 doesn't still work. (which doesn't surprise me.) We are cousins for sure and I would like to contact him.
Roy Hendrick

Monique, Your Gockley/Caquelin info is accurate. I don't where this Robert gleaned his information about the Gockley's coming from a Northland-ish part of Europe, but seems so far off-base with the American Gockley lineage. Unless the English used that name as a more general moniker for names of foreign nationals they couldn't understand. I believe I have found Nicholas Caquelin's parents. Do you have that same info and/or more updated than them ?
Apparently those French families endured the 30/100 years wars by escaping further into the mountains when bands of marauders came through their villages.
I believe the Caquelin namesake to represent either a "sea shell" or mean "maker of flax linen". I assume they were farmers given Sebastian and his sons farmed the land in Pennsylvania. There is a relocated cemetery marking the family's plots & headstones in the Middlecreek Park (not sure of name)
I took French in HS.and understand some, but not enough.
Take care. As a German-speakers in what was a rural and largely German-speaking community at the time -- in Cocalico, Lancaster County, PA -- her parents would not have given her the English name of "Frances". Her Swiss-origin nickname would have been "Froni". Christian, my ancestor, was one of Veronica's older brothers.

Veronica's mother was of the Brethren (Dunkers) faith, which is probably why Veronica was too.

Dale Bricker

Hi I was wondering if you have any information on Susan Miller Spang Gockley. She was once married to Isaac Spang who was my ggg grandfather and the mother of Isaac Spang my gg grandfather. For the last year I have been trying to find out who her parents are. Levi and his sister Leah would be step-brother and step-sister to Isaac who was born 1839 in Pa. If you have any information on her I would very much appreicate what you have, it may help me connect the last link in my line. I do have some information on Levi and Leah, and their father Absalom. You could e-mail me directly at charleliz@yahoo.com Thank you Charlene

Dear Joannacay,

Thank you so much for the information, what a wonderful Christmas present you have given me. I have been trying to connect Samuel Cocklin (my gr-gr-grandfather) to Sebastion Caquelin for the past several months but could not find the information to PROVE his father. My Aunt started the Cocklin genealogy in 1964 and gave each of the neices a copy of what she had although she cound not find Samuel's father. I still have some work to do on Samuel's children and their children, but have some. My line is Jacob Winfield (eldest child) b. 24/12/1833 Cumberland Co. Pa., d.3 Apr.1920 Harrison Co. Mo. m. Mary Ann Knight 11 Sept,1860 Marshallville, Wayne Co. Ohio, moved to Winterset, Madison Co. Ia. and later to Ridgeway, Harrison Co. Mo. She was b. 7 Dec.1843 d.4 Apr.1917. If you don't have this information I would be more than happy to send you anything I have. You can contact me at gmas29@yahoo.com. if you want. Thanks again. Connie
A1.13 in my records:
Samuel Cocklin, son of Dietrich Cocklin and Catherine Coover, m (1) 11/5/1832 Mary Eberly, (2) 1/27/1859 her sister Catherine Eberly Eichelberger, widow with 5 children; Samuel and Mary had 10 children, 9 born Baughman Twp, Wayne Co, OH (first I don't know). From the Washington Democrat, Washington, IA, June 28, 1905, reporting on children's reunion: "Samuel Cocklin, father of this family, came to Iowa in 1854 and was one of the first auctioneers in the county. Here is an item for the Historical Society. He came from Wayne Co., OH. We remember some of the old gags used to get off when he was crying a sale. 'Shoot, Jake, the world is full of pigeons.' Here is another: 'Your pipe is out,' when a man quit bidding. 'More bidding and less talk, less squeal and more wool,' was another. He taught John Reeves and George Hebel the profession. He was the best of his time. He died in 1891 at the good old age of eighty. His first wife died in 1856 back in Carlisle, PA, where she is buried [Slate Hill Mennonite Cemetery, Allen Twp]. The were back on a visit. The youngest child John was then about six years old. He nor any of the children ever saw their mother after she left them to go visiting.
Hello,
I can tell you thay some Gockleys in fact are Caquelin, a French name from a small alsatian region called Le Ban de la Roche ; this region provided many migrants to America, espacially at the occasion of the arrival of the ship Princess Augusta in 1736. If you can speak French, you will be able to read my virtual book Les Voyageurs de la Princess Augusta, at this adress : http://badonpierre.free.fr/princess2/f001.html ; if you do not speak French, I hope you will enjoy the illustrations, and guess something of the pedigrees, for which I use this international code : o = birth ; x = marriage ; + = death.
Have a good day
Monique

Gockley/Caquelin

Matt, I recall seeing a posting mentioning a Polly as a spouse who lived in western PA., but don't recall exactly where. Might have been on Caquelin page. Your western PA/eastern OH. Gockley's were part of a migration west. I think there was a rift in the family of Cocalico Twp. in which family moved for whatever reason. Some even changed their name to Cockley just to distance themselves, although there have been as many as 21 different spellings of the Caquelin/ Gockley lineage. Larry Gockley

The only listing I have for a Samuel Gockley lists a date of birth as 23 SEPTEMBER, 1793., son of Sebastian & Anna Marie (Hoffman) Gockley. I have no follow-up information on him except his siblings and parental lineage. There were Gockley's that moved to Dekalb Co.Illinois for awhile, then moved to Nebraska. Do you have any other information on Samuel ?

My husband's Great grandmother was Fanny Elizabeth Gockley. Her mother, Elizabeth Bates or Baker Gockley died in 1861 in Cumberland County, PA, when Fanny was nine. Fanny's father was Samuel Gockley, died in 1853 in Illinois. Samuel's parents were Samuel Shirk Gockley and Polly Rohrer. I am interested in Elizabeth's grave site and who might be buried near her.

I have some info. The graves were relocated from another area. Let me know if you need any other help What is your Gockley connection ?.
Larry Gockley

Larry,
It looks like you are doing a lot of work on the family. I have a lot of information I organized from the days of the Caquelin Chronicle, put out by Velma Clark, who I believe was part of your branch of the family. I hoped to put out a series of three-generation volumes for Sebastian Caquelin and for each of his grandsons, and perhaps female lines if they are complete enough. But I never got the time to get the data into finished formats. Would you be interested in working together on this?
My email address is joannacay@hotmail.com.

Gockley surname was Caquelin

When the Gockleys arrived in the US, their surname was Caquelin. In a German-speaking community, it became Gockley, Cockley, and Cocklin. They came from Waldersbach, Alsace, in 1736: Sebastian son of Nicholas, with sons Dietrich, John, and Jacob and daughters Marie (Page), Catherine (Ditzler), and Sara (Brecht).

Nancy,

If you live in Lancaster, there are plenty of Gockleys buried out there and plenty of places to research them locally for you. My husband and I drove out from King of Prussia one day to check out burial plots. Some are now in protected bird sanctuaries and not accessible unless by appointment with the park ranger, but the office has information in their files about these families. "Grave Undertakings" lists cemeteries with Gockleys in them. You are probably related as my Gockleys settled in Lancaster. They were Caquelin first.
But we can swap info and compare notes if you like.

Lenise

The Gockley's were Swiss Nationally, but spoke German. The name means 'fighting cock'. They were the gangsters of their day, controlling the land used for cock fights and some of the the more seedy activities. They were probably the descendents of the Northlanders during their push inland along the rivers.
technologyteacher@home.com

Gockley family history

My grandmother was adopted and raised by Levi Gockley who lived in Whittemore Iowa. He had relation in Illinois. My grandmother never knew who she was but I remember her saying that she thought that Levi may have been her uncle because he was always kind to her and his wife(her adopted mother)was very mean to her. She was born in Illinois and that is all I know about it. She died in 1965 and is buried in Rodman, Iowa. The Gockley's are buried in Whittemore. She never knew who her real parents were. I have looked several times trying to find Gockley information and have found none. My grandmothers name was Sadie Gockley Debolt and her birth date(we think is right ) is February 20 1878.
Wayne,
I just reread the message where I told about Otto Goranson and his siblings, and realized that I made an error. The parents were John Eva (Kron) Goranson; Magnuson was the married name of Eva's sister Mary. Sorry! Kathy

Dear Wayne, I talked to my dad who said the Goranson's came to the United States from Sweden in approximately 1884. As I said before, Otto Goranson, who married Minnie Deutschman, was his uncle. What is your precise relationship to Otto Minnie?

Wayne,
I have been to Joliet, IL doing some Goranson research, and have located the rural cemetery where Sarah Abraham Deutschman and Minnie Otto Goranson are buried. If you would like details, or copies of the pictures that I took in the cemetery, let me know. Also, I will be going back to Joliet to do more research, so if there are items that you would like me to look for, just let me know. Kathy
