Yesterday we received our 5th set of DNA results in the Godby DNA Project at Family Tree DNA.

These new results are an exact match with our other 4 and prove beyond a doubt the traditional link between the Casey/Pulaski Co., KY and Logan Co., WVA/Montgomery Co., VA groups of Godbys.

If there are any Davie Co., NC Godbys that would consider joining, please do. We need to prove that traditional link as well!
Godbee - Georgia - Burke/Pierce County

I am searching for information on Matana Godbee. In 1862 she married William Henry Buchanan. I have reason to believe that she may be my g.g.grandmother. My g.g.grandfather is William Henry Buchanan who died in 1864 in the Civil War. There is a marriage recorded in Burke Country between Matana Godbee and William Henry Buchanan. The year of the marriage and their ages at the time, fit perfectly with my two family members. Until recently I never knew the name of William's wife. I found her listed on a document - Salt Rations to Civil War Widows - dated 1864. His wife is listed as "Annie" Buchanan - this would be a very like nickname for "Matana" - Anna or Annie. But, I know nothing of the Godbee line as this is the first time I've found any record of it. I'm hoping to prove that Matana was the mother of my g.grandmother - Annie Belle Buchanan (obviously named for her mother.)

I found John's marriage license in Douglas County. It was kind of wierd that I also found Robert Thomas Godbee's Marriage license there also. Neither he nor his wife were from there. As far as Stephen goes, I think that he may have been in Alabama. A Stephen Godbee had a land patent in AL in the late 1850's and as far as I can tell, he would have been the only candidate. I believe that he joined up with the Confederacy during the war with an outfit from GA. I have 2 records for a Stephen Godbee during the war but neither record set has alot of info.
Albert's estate records didn't say what happened to Stephen but did stipulate as to the relationship of W.T. and J.H. Godbee to their father. It even used the spelling that W.T. was using at the time.
I am working on getting Albert's Southern Claims Commission records. I have Henry B.'s but Alberts were never put on microfilm.

Do you have a record of John & Susan's marriage? I copied out of their family Bible the info I have. It said Carrolton, Georgia, but I realize that information could be wrong.
I know that generations back the neighbors sometimes pronounced our name "Godsbey" although my grandfather always said "Godbee".
I can't find Stephan after 1858. According to courthouse records he sold all his property to Dr. Henry & Albert in 1858. Then, Jincy is listed as head of household in 1860. I know Stephen was buried in the family cemetary in the winter of 1866. But where was he between 1858 & 1866? Do you have any info on that?
Did you learn anything from Albert's estate records?

Thank you for the reply. Do you know anything about Sarah's marriage to William Mulkey? I've found information in a family tree on this site that she had three children with him; Rebecca A. b. 8 Oct 1850, James William b. 4 Mar 1852, and Mordecai Joseph b. 6 July 1854. The 1860 Census, Burke, 68th District has James M. Godbee (30), Sarah (27), Moses F. (2), George W. M. (3m) and Mordecai Mulkey (6). There's no Rebecca or James in the household.

Also, in the 1880 Census, there is another daughter listed, Charlotte (10). Is she actually their daughter or a relative? Thanks again for your reply and hope to hear from you again.

James Moses Godbee

James Moses Godbee is my ggg grandfather. I'm descended from his daughter Martha. I have been researching census records and I've run into a snag. The 1870 census for Burke County Georgia, District 73 taken on Sept. 3, has Jas M. Godbee (36), Sarah (33) and 6 children. The same census, for District 66 (Griffins Landing) taken on June 16, has James M. Godbee (40), Sarah (40), and 6 children. I'm trying to determine if this is the same family. The childrens names are similar, but the ages and order of birth vary wildly. Also, the 1880 Census lists another child aged 13 who is not listed in the 1870 Census. If anyone can help me solve this mystery, I would appreciate it.

"Godbees from Georgia who moved to Alabama"

I'm seeking information on Godbees that moved from Georgia to Alabama in the early 1800's. My greatgreatgrandfather William M. Godby was born in Alabama in 1844. He married Margaret Clarissa Smith in 1865 in Lawrence County, Alabama. On all of the Texas Censuses William states both of his parents are from Georgia. We have not been able to pinpoint who William M. Godby's parents were. There is a possibility that either Henry Godby or Green Godby from Franklin and Lawrence County Alabama could be William M. Godby's father. There seems to be a connection between Henry Godby and Green Godby. They may be brothers. I do know for sure that Green Godby was born in Georgia to Samuel Godbee and Elizabeth Moore. For some reason most of the Georgia Godbees changed their name to Godby after moving to Alabama. William M. Godby moved to Texas after 1870 with his wife and children. If any one has any information that could help me with this family , I would appreciate it.

Cheryl Curry Bonner

Dear Patricia,
I know of "Miss Mattie" as she was called by the people of this community (Nesmith, Winston County, Alabama). My g.g. grandfather Godbee moved here from Georgia in 1888. Several years later a Godbee cousin from Georgia came to visit. This cousin married the Godbee's neighbor, Mattie Phillips. They had 1 son, Enos. The Godbee cousin from Georgis left Miss Mattie when Enos was a baby. This story comes from my G.G.aunt, Callie Godbee Robinson. According to Guy V. Phillips (Mattie's nephew), Mattie is buried in a cemetary at Curry, Alabama. He heard that Enos was buried in Blount County and searched some cemetaries there but never found his grave. Miss Mattie was known as a kind person who had a very hard time getting by. Enos left here when he was young and did not visit her much (according to Guy V. Phillips). I don't know anything about the Godbee cousin except that he was from Uncle Bill's family in Georgia.

Sincerely,

Lynn Godbee Tuggle

According to Aunt Callie, Mattie's husband was from Uncle Bill's family. I don't know if he was Uncle Bill's son or grandson. I have more information on Uncle Bill's family.
Mr. Brewer,
John Godbee was my gg grandfather. Stephen Godbee was his father, but is not buried in the Godby/Godbee family cemetary on the Old National Highway. The Stephan Godbee buried there is the son of Dr. Henry Benjamin Godby, who was the brother of my Stephan Godbee. Our family has been unable to locate the resting place of Stephan Godbee. He disappeared from the family in 1858 and we have not been able to locate him. If you have any information on him I would be grateful if you would share it. I have been in contact with Danny Godby whose father owns the Godby/Godbee cemetary and he informed me that the Stephan Godby buried there is not my Stephan Godbee. Which of Albert and Elizabeth's children do you come from? We have information on our family back to the 1500's. My only mystery is where did Stephan Godbee go and why? He left a wife and 3 small children. Albert is my 4g grandfather.
Lynn Godbee Tuggle

John Henderson Godbee and Susan Bennefield were married on 14 Feb 1884 in Douglas County, GA.
It is interesting to note that many members of the Godbee/Godbee family made it through Douglas County. Even Dr Henry Godbee lived there for awhile. It is even more interesting that several members of the family Dr Henry, William T., Robert Thomas and others were spelling the name Godsbey or Godsby for awhile.
I am a descendant of William Talley Godbee, son of Stephen Godbee and Jincy West. Growing up I never heard the story of the feud but when I started working on my genealogy an aunt told me about a feud that had taken place. Apparently the family changed the story quite a bit because they claimed that it was between two brothers who originally came to America in the early to mid 1800's.
A cousin of mine had found the Godbee cemetery years ago but was told by our uncle Alton that they were no relation. I am wondering if maybe the feud had something to do with Albert's estate. I have located the estate and plan to get the records. I'd like to see if William and John recieved their father's share since Albert died intestate.

Chris Green

Godby/Godbee/Godbey DNA Project

I've started a Godby DNA Project at Family Tree DNA.

We have two sets of results to date. One, a descendant of John Godby b. about 1740 who went into Kentucky and the other a descendant of his brother William b. about 1750 who stayed in S.W. Virginia.

The DNA of both participants match.

We are looking for a Godby descendant of either George Godby b. 1757 or his brother Russell Godby b. 1760 to join. This is the Godby line that was in Halifax Co., VA and then in North Carolina.

In addition, any Godby's in the U.K. are sought to compare to the U.S. family.

Some group funding is available for this research.

Hi,

fascinating, my parents, Max and Lauretta Godbee still live in Grafton, so the tradition lives on. My father was born to Barney and Gladys Godbee in the bush behind Casino and moved to Grafton as a small boy in the 30's, so not a continuous line, but i assume related.

Paul Godbee

Hi Leanne,
John, Eliza and Emma Goodby came to Australia as Assisted Immigrants. They departed Liverpool, England, on the 20th of December 1859, on board the "Dirigo" and arrived in Sydney on the 13th of April 1860. Records state that upon their arrival John was 24, Eliza 22 and Emma 1. Thats all I have on their Immigration. Hope it is of some use to you.
As you can see the Godbee surname was spelt differently when they first arrived here. If you are researching the family in England, try using Goodby, Godby and Godbee variations of the surname.

Regards,

John
Hi Leanne,
I have an Emma Godbee in my family tree, Father John, Mother Eliza. Emma married my Great Great Grand Uncle George Llewellyn. If your Great Grandfather and Emma were brother and sister, you might be interested to know that when John and Eliza immigrated to Australia with baby Emma, their surname was spelt Godby. If this sounds familiar, contact me and I will give you the immigration details.

Regards,

John

To Cheryl Curry Bonner
I am researching my family that includes some Godby names.
I found out just recently that my father's mother was
Pearl Clarcy or Claricy (Godby)Liles. Her father was
Thomas H Godby Born Dec 4, 1866- Alabama. See 1910
US Census for Brown County Texas.
I am looking for some information on the parents of Thomas
H. Godby. Do you have some info where they may be listed
on the U S. Census reports and a connection to Thomas H.?
I also have some information on Thomas's wives and children. I saw your
reply to Glenda and so much of that fits my family.
Appreciate any info that you want to share.
Pat (Liles) Walton
