The 1st Godbey to America arrived here in 1610 on the ship Deliverance. Along with the 1st Lt Govener to Va. His property was a 50 acre land grant in what is known today as Newport News Va, just North of Blunt Point. His son, Thomas, changed the spelling to Godbey after his fathers death. He moved to what is now Known as Churchland area of Chesapeake Va. He travelled extensively back and forth to England. Some books on or family show a 3rd Thomas, this is a mis-conception, the second Thomas had 2 wills, because of his traveling only the 2nd was ever probated. It was not uncommon to do this practice, as sea travel was uncertain in those times. Almost all of my research has been conducted at the VA state archives and a lot of info can be found in the old court records.
