These variations of GODBOLD are very common, particularly before 1800 when they were written down less often. I haven't researched the STANNARDs and I don't know of a connection to yours I'm afraid.
Best of luck!

Our Martha Maria Stannard is the dau. of Richard G. Stannard and Amelia Cole. I believe Martha was born in Browston or Great Yarmouth in 1839. She married Frederick Gorbold. But in further searching, his father is listed as Godbold, Godbolt and Gorble. I don't know if name was changed or misspelled or mispronounced. Any thoughts on this?

I don't know of a GODBOLD connection - during the period from the 1780s to 1830s our GODBOLDs are in Dennington which is about 30 miles SW of Blundeston. I believe there are clusters of GODBOLDs in these two areas during this period, and I imagine there must be an earlier connection, but I've never found it! We have a James GODBOLD but he was born in 1758.

Interestingly there just possibly could be a STANNARD connection as James' grandson Charles GODBOLD (b 1837 in Dennington) married a Jane STANNARD in 1866. She was from Heveningham which is still a long way from Blundeston and they were married there, however in the 1901 census they lived in Flixton which is much nearer to Blundeston. This is probably a coincidence, but you never know - do you know where your Martha STANNARD was from?

Hello, I am searching the Godbolds/Gorbolds and have found:
James Godbold born abt. 1796 residing in the Somerleyton Parish of Suffolk Co. in 1841 UK census. Then, I found his birthplace listed as Blundeston, Suffolk Co. in the 1851 census. One of his sons was Frederick born 1837-38 in Somerleyton, Suffolk.
I am wondering if this is the same James Godbold (with some family later listed as Gorbold) that may be the son of William Godbold born 1770 and Sarah Beck I have seen in a post or perhaps some other parents?
Regards, YM
Brian - Our family is Crickmore of Brockdish, Norfolk. Our John Crickmore 1 married Sarah Stannard and I have all the descendants from this relationship right up to 2009 from 1698. Please contact me if you consider there is any relationship between the two families - John and Sarah lived in Kersley Hall, Suffolk; Weybread & Stradbroke, Suffolk and their descendants were in Barnham, Suffolk; Brockdish Place, Norfolk & Pulham Market Hall, Norfolk.

Hope there may be some connection between Zelley, Stannard, Godbold and Crickmores.

Regards, Richard Crickmore

I have a question? Why did Kitney and Martha go to mississippi with Roan Godbold, if their father was still alive until 1825? Were they some one else? In a land record book in Amite County, Mississippi about 1810-1813 Roan Godbold is listed in charge of 2 slaves given to Martha and Kitney by grandmother Priscilla Jones. Have we got 2 Martha Godbolds, grandchildren of Priscilla that went to Mississippi?

Mesick Godbold Genealogy Online

Hi everyone,

After quite a bit of effort, I have made an HTML version of Colonel John Mesick's "A Partial Genealogy of John Godbold of South Carolina" available on the Web. This is drawn from an OCR scan of the hard copy belonging to my mother, who is a Godbold herself.

I did considerable hand-proofreading but there are bound to be some mistakes; if you find any please let me know. I preserved the formatting of the original for the most part, but the genealogy itself is condensed into three big chunks for slightly easier browsing.

The link is: http://monkey.org/~blandoon/genealogy/godbold/

Hope this is useful,
Blandon
To Colin and Paul:

As previously mentioned there are a number of web sites that have the GODBOLD information regarding various branches including two relating to members of the GODBOLD-STANNARD branch.
In the last five months, I am most pleased to have expanded the information on all GODBOLD branches with the help of so many.
In the GODBOLD-STANNARD branch at least to members were casualties during WW II One was EDWARD ( GODBOLD brother of HAROLD and GEORGE. From the Flixton area, we have HORACE GEORGE GODBOLD.
Young Edward left a wife and young son Sadly, it is not known if Edward was aware of the birth, of son CHRISTOPHER.

Of the OSCAR GODBOLD-ANNIE ELIZABETH SHAW children, two emigrated to Canada. DOROTHY ROSE GODBOLD/WILLIAM FOX and GEORGE ARTHUR GODBOLD/NELLIE TILSTON. Also, one of the daughters Cynthia emigrated to South Africa to work as a nurse for the leprosy victims.
There are many interesting stories, for the various branches including the naming of a road after Harold - called GODBOLD CLOSE. It appears at least three members of the GODBOLD-STANNARD branch are MBE's.
Also, from WWI, there is at least one recipient of the Military Medal- MM.

As a follow-up concerning the OSCAR GODBOLD-ANNIE ELIZABETH SHAW Branch.

The first two children were twins born in late 1903. However the actual registration did not tale place until the 1st Quarter of 1904. The two were ALEC OSCAR and DOROTHY ROSE GODBOLD in the District of Wangford, Sussex. For many years, Alec was a policeman in Beverley.

Christopher Edward GODBOLD, Edward (Ted) GODBOLD and Annie GODBOLD

The Christopher Godbold Story: By Brian ZELLEY

It all began so long ago during 1942, Edward (Ted) GODBOLD was
in the Battle of El Alamein about the time his wife Annie was giving birth to CHRISTOPHER EDWARD GODBOLD., Sadly, Ted did not make it through the Battle and back to see Annie and Chris.

Fifty-four years later, Christopher died in 1996. It is believed Annie GODBOLD also died in the 1990's.

Following the death of Edward in 1942, Annie moved to County DURHAM where young Christopher was raised.

Some time after 1996, Christopher's wife was attempting to contact
members of the GODBOLD family to research the family tree.
At this time it is unknown what information was gathered, but
Edward's closest brother George Arthur GODBOLD's family in Canada were never contacted.

It is hoped that if Mrs GODBOLD is still interested - she may contact
this lister for an in-depth history.

Of interest, Sgt. George Arthur GODBOLD happened to be with the Leicestershire Regiment in Singapore the same year Christopher Edward Godbold was born, and Ted was KIA. Georgie Boy spent a number of years in a POW camp before being released in 1945.
