Godby DNA Project Update

Yesterday we received our 5th set of DNA results in the Godby DNA Project at Family Tree DNA.

These new results are an exact match with our other 4 and prove beyond a doubt the traditional link between the Casey/Pulaski Co., KY and Logan Co., WVA/Montgomery Co., VA groups of Godbys.

If there are any Davie Co., NC Godbys that would consider joining, please do. We need to prove that traditional link as well!

Robert William Godby - Norfolk, VA

I am searching for information on Robert William Godby. All I know is that he married a widow named Amelia C. (nee Bowers) Hitchings on Feb. 12, 1898 in Norfolk, VA. I have no other information on him. She was born in 1856 (if that might give us some idea of his age). I have evidence that they lived in Norfolk in 1904 and in 1907 (same address both times). However, I cannot find them in the 1900 or later censuses. If anyone has any information on him, please reply.

If you mean William b. 1750 & John b. 1752 then the answer is no. The relationship is assumed based on the scant records that we have but not proven.

If memorny serves, George Godby is the founder of the Davie Co., NC Godbys?

We very much want some of the Davie Co., NC Godby's to join the project to prove the link with the William & John branch of the family.

A check of the 1870 census record for Sarah and new husband Milton Cox would reveal if there are any children born before their 1866 marriage date - unfortunately, I have not been able to find that record yet. I am hoping to locate Warren Masters Civil War record; perhaps it will show what happened to him.

I am a descendant of William Godbey and his wife Zannah. Now that it has been almost a year since you posted about your Godbey DNA surname project I was wondering if you have had more Godbey descendants tested and/or if you would give us an update.

A DNA surname study for one of my husband's line provided INVALUABLE info, so I am glad to see one being done for the Godbey's, especially in light of the problems connecting early VA Godbey's to subsequent descendants.

I would also like to connect with other Wm Godbey-Zannah descendants, so if you come from the same lines, please feel free to contact me.

A few years ago (around 1996) I was in touch with Joyce Hager of
Stephenville, TX. She is a direct descendant of Sarah Sipple & Josiah Newell. She said that Sarah Sipple Godby mar Josiah Newell &
lived in Texas. On a family group sheet she sent me she has Cyothy NEWELL
born 22 Jul 1879 "died when child." Josiah Newell was born 3 Apr 1850 &
died 20 Aug 1922 in Dallas, Dallas co, TX & Sarah Newell died 15 Aug 1936 in
Campbell, Hunt co, TX & is buried in Cumby, Hopkins co, TX.
Sarah appears to have been enumerated twice on the 1880 Census (unless I am horribly mistaken). She is Sarah Godby in Pulaski co, KY & Sarah C Newell in Mitchell, Lawrence co, IN).
IN reads: Josiah Newell, age 29, b KY; Sarah C Newell, age 17, b KY; Cyathy Newell, age 10mos, b IN. Sarah's grandfather Henry Sipple & her uncle John Sipple are enumerated on the previous page in Lawrence co, IN.

I am interested to know what information you have gained from the Godbey DNA project. I'm descended from the Godbey line that went from Casey Co., KY to Missouri.

Do you have any information about the Godbeys before they came to America? I'm assuming you're descended from the Thomas Godby who came to Jamestown, VA on the ship Deliverance in 1610.

I think I miss typed the year because I just checked my Family Tree Maker 16 File and it says 1752, Hailfax, VA.; died 1803 in West Virginia. Not sure what I was looking at when I typed 1740. I have his father as John also, born in 1734, d. 1762. I got the information from Ancestry.com.

How would it benefit our line to join the project? I have two brothers who could take the Y test, and I could take the MTDNA test, but if it's the wrong branch of the family tree, we don't want to waste our money. Also I want to find out family information on Thomas Godby's ancestry: where they came from.

The Nathan Godle discussed in the Godley DNA Project on FamilyTreeDNA.com came to VA from Cheshire, England in 1637, according to their bio. My ancestor, Thomas Godby came to VA on the ship Deliverance in 1610 and died in 1628. I'm not sure whether this project would be related to my line, though in reading the rest of the bio, there seems to be some connection because I'm also related to the Godbeys who went from Casey County, KY to Missouri, and then my ggrandfather went to Texas, along with several of his siblings.

I think the main point we have shown so far is that the Godby's from Pulaski/Casey Co., KY are related with the Godby's of Montgomery Co., VA. Proving the papertrail.

We would like to prove that the North Carolina Godby's are connected as well to prove the papertrail and then move into England.

Milton and Sarah are living in Milton's mother's household in 1870. They are Saline, Saline, Arkansas, page 3. The others in the household are Milton's brother Asa and his sister Susan. He also had a sister named Sarah, but she was married in July of 1866 and was out of the house by 1870. Milton's mother is the widow of Alfred Cox, Sarah Jane Bishop Cox. Milton's firstborn son Jerome Cox's firstborn was also a Sarah, who died last year at age 91. Too many Sarahs!

Sarah Ann Godby (b. 1846 AL) was the daughter of Francis and Parthenia Ball Godby. She died after 1930 in Saline, Arkansas.

I can't say definitively that Warren Masters and Sarah Godbey had no children, but I am inclined to say they didn't. The census records that indicate number of children she had list a number that accounts for her children with her 2nd husband, Milton A. Cox. Can you tell me what happened to Warren Masters? I can't find evidence that he died or that they were divorced. I would guess he died in the war but have no proof.

Are you interested in Godbys who ended up in West Virginia? I am the granddaughter of Frances Olive Godby (WV), daughter of Oscar Godby (Beckley, VA/WV), son of Anderson Francis Godby (Montgomery Co. VA), son of William V. Godby (Pulaski Co. VA), etc., etc., etc.

Everything I have seen on the internet and written in the past has claimed that John Godby was born about 1752. I wonder if you can tell me your source for the about 1740 birth date? Thanks so much. I'm anxious to see where this DNA Project leads the Godby/Godbey researchers.

Thanks for all of the information. It will take me a while to study it all. One mistake I did see right away because it is my great, great grandmother Octavia Jones who married Jacob Godby. Her father was NOT Silas Jones. I have seen this mistake elsewhere. Her father was Thomas E. Jones proven by a list of heirs in a land deed. Her mother's name was Elizabeth also proven by references to her and Thomas E. in land sales. Her surname hasn't been proven yet but there is some evidence it might have been Horn.

News letter sent to my E-Mail site.
I started Collecting family information on the 7th of
October 1974,when I was only 10 Years old.
It was my Mother who got me started in genealogy.
she would drive around on rides going through cemetery's
We would copy down Related names and I would put this
Information In my own hand written charts.
Now the Computer age is around I've been trying to transcribe this information over to the Family Tree Malker
formate,but over the last 7 years and 3 Computers Later
I've Got the Gabriel Godbey Branch of the William Godbey
(1750)William,Family in my F.T.M.file.
I've also been working on puting my Sirname of Standish
On a diffrent file on F.T.M.,This seems to take great
Deal of Time and a lot of setting.(Pain)
I ran out of file Space 10 years ago,so I have boxes of
family Notes None of it in files.
I now believe I may have the space for some new Filing
Cabinets so soon I may have some order to the Genealogy.
I do have about 13 Chart books full of Godby-Godbey family
Charts,William & John's family's.
I've even got a Double cousin who's Related on her one side
to your Branch of the Family,Her family's at Bethelridge
Cem.In Casey Co.,Ky.
Have you Ever been to Bethelridge Cem.?
It has Godbey Family Tombestones so old they are Imposible
to read Expecialy in the Back Section.

I have been researching the Godbey Family over 32 years.
I live not far from Bethelridge but in Lincoln Co.,Ky.
I am in contact with both the two branches of the
Godbey family,and many of the descendants of the John
Godbey family(1752 John) Have said for years that they
could not believe that they were related to the William
Godbey (1750)Branch of the family But they are.
Some have been putting another generation in the line
Before Wm. & John But it is Clear that there father was
John Godbey b.1705,the son of Edward Godbee.

away.

I do have 13 chart books on the Godbey family that I hand
wrote out over the last 33 years.
I live in the Godbey home land area In Lincoln,Pulaski &
Casey co's Kentucky.
I've been to Pall Mall(Overton Co) Now Near Fentress co., but in Pickett Co.,Tn.
There is some evidence that this Gabriel Godbey family also
lived in Rhea Co.,Tn.

What branch of the Godby family was your Sarah Godby from.
I do have a lot of Cox info from Casey & Pulaski Co.,Ky.
Francis A. Godbey's father Gabriel was the son of
William Godbey,b.1750,this William was the elder brother
to John Godby,b.1752.
Some of John's family moved to Pulaski and then Casey Co.,Ky.
William's son Gabriel Moved to Overton Co.,Tn.,
His son Timothy C. I Godbey Moved to Cumberland,Clinton and
then Casey Co.,Ky.

We would very much like you to join the Godbey DNA Project.

To date, we have two members, Mike Thompson (his father was a Godbey from the Montgomery Co., VA group. Mike was raised by his maternal Grandparents and uses their surname Thompson), and myself. I'm from the Casey Co/Pulaski Co., KY Godbeys; my 2nd great-grandfather was born out of wedlock in 1833 in Pulaski Co., KY (his mom was a Farmer).

Mike's and my DNA match, and as I had no other matches and plenty of Godbey neighbors in 1833 this solved the mystery as of my 2nd great grandfather's paternity.

The idea that the Godleys and Godbeys are one and the same family does not seem to work. There is no DNA match and the only real evidence is one Godbey, a well known minister, speculating that there may be a connection.

What we are trying to do with this DNA project, is show that the Casey/Pulaski Co., KY Godbeys, the Southwest VA Godbeys and the Davies Co. NC Godbeys are all related as the paper genealogy suggests.

Then we will try to connect to England.

Adding your Godbey line DNA to the project would confirm, beyond any doubt, the Godbey DNA signature and connection between KY and VA.
