Am trying to trace my uncle (Albert William James Godfrey, born in Devon 1920). Have found an Albert William Godfrey who died in Herefordshire Shropshire in 2004 - is there any connection? My Albert was the son of Edward George Godfrey and both left for Canada/America in about 1924. Edward went on to have another son, Paul born in 1952 and so far I am unable to trace Edward or Albert. Is it possible that Albert returned to the UK? Would be grateful if anyone out there can help.

John

William Godfrey 1829-1903 Somerset - help!!

Hello, I am trying to find William's parents. William was married to Matilda Mitchell b 1830 in Somerset. I thought his parents were William Godfrey b 1786-1841 and Ann Dibble 1792-1844 and so entered all the relevant names into my family tree. Then a distant relative came up with some different parents for William and so now I have to find out which ones are the right ones!! Can anybody help please? There are so many Williams from the same time and they all like to change their birth year and place! (whats new there then?!)
Anyway, any help would be great.
Best Wishes to all
Julie

In 2002 he was looking for his half-brother, Albert Frederick William James Godfrey and Albert's father, Edward George Godfrey. Edward was originally born in England and went to the USA via Canada in about 1923. He married May Newby, who may well be Paul's mother. My mother was Albert's sister and I am desperately trying to find any living relatives of his. If there are any out there, please contact me.

John

He lived in the Bermondsey area of London and possibly moved to Canada in the mid 50's. A family member was a Joseph Peter Godfrey dob 1857'ish from GLASTONBURY, Somerset, UK. Joseph parents were William & Elizer Godfrey and Anne & Edwin B, siblings.
Joseph married a Mary Jane ? from Greenwich in 1881. They were boarders at 297 Lynton Road, Bermondsey, in 1911.
Are these connected to anyone on this board, if so I would be very pleased to make contact.
Alan

Mary Ann Godfrey b.1819/20 Taunton Somerset England - help

This is my great-great-great grandparent, and I am trying to track further back.

I know she married Joseph Batt in 1849 in Somerset, and they had 5 children, of which my great-great grandparent Ellen is the oldest, and she was born out of wedlock. I have found Mary Ann in the 1851, 61, 71 and 91 censuses.

According to some hints I have seen, her parents were William Godfrey and Mary Godfrey but I don't think that is right as although they had a number of children the evidence does not really support a Mary and their child called Ann went on to marry a differeent man and have plenty of children by him.

Can anyone help?

The name "Godfrey" comes from "son of Geoffrey" and is reasonably common medieval name through much of Western Europe with plenty of variants such as "Geoffrey" "Gerrald" "Jerrald" "Jeffrey" and so on.

As such there is unlikely to be a single common ancestor to trace back to, and likewise it is likely that over the years several different Godfrey's have left Europe for the Americas.

In order to track ancestors of Robert Godfrey it would be helpful if you have some more information like likely birth dates. Good luck with the project.

Neil

Hi, I hope you've figured it out by now, but I would say the first step is to figure out where you think some of these people are likely to have lived, (and say so here, so as folks can maybe see how they fit into their trees or records).

Assuming it's the US or UK then you should be able to track some of them through the census records.

Neil

Hello Charlene,
Just thought I would jot you a note to see how you are doing and if you found out any more information about the Godfreys of Manchester, Jamaica, W.I. I think I told you that I went to JA in 2005 to do research and stayed in Mandeville with a cousin (a Godfrey), spoke with many relatives, but could not find any information on my grandfather, Herbert Bean Godfrey, except that he originated in Wales, British Isles and probably came to JA during the mid to late 1800's. If you have any more info please drop me a line. Hope you are well, Linda Williamson (Godfrey) Nelson

Hello, I am looking for help or advice please.

I am searching for details of John & Anne Godfrey who are shown as the parents of Thomas Godfrey christened 22/5/1785 in Bluntisham. Their descendants maintained a considerable presence in this area for a long time afterwards & I would be very pleased to hear from anyone with the same interest in this family.

I can see on IGI a marriage between a John Godfrey & an Anne Fordham 11/1/1781 at Knapwell, Cambs. They seemed to have moved from Knapwell to Bluntisham (see chr of William West Godfrey 1782 Knapwell & later christening of second William West Godfrey at Bluntisham 1787).

I cannot find anything to really confirm that these are the parents & I cannot find anything on the births of either John or Anne.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Mick
