Godley records need adopting

I was “gifted” with a box of genealogy having to do with one of my family lines after a researcher passed away. In the box is also a lot of other family lines that aren’t mine. I’ve sorted them into folders as best I can and here are the surnames and a little about them if I can tell much.

Buttrey – Wilkes Co NC (small file – letters)
Bailey – Topeka Kansas, New Castle, Pa, Youngstown, Ohio (small file, letters)
Loveless – Columbus Ohio, Washington Co., Va (small file, letters)
Wilderich – Henry Wiederick or Wilderick, b Germany 1858, pedigree chart (small file)
Hildebrand – Morgan County, Missouri, John Hildebrand b 1822 in Baden Germany m Victoria Anhauser or Enghauser – (thick file, quite a bit of research)
Trabuc/Trabue – Edward Trabue b 1764, son of John, married Martha Haskins, Jessamine Co., Ky and Va.
King – Joseph King m 1819 to Frances, Lincolnshire England
Nichols – Abner JeffersonNichols b 1837 probably Alabama, poss Missouri or Ark. (one letter only)
Swallow – from England, possible Liverpool (one letter only)
Brown – a few pages of general research
Burton/Cecelia – Philadelphia Pa, research log only
Rouse/Buler – Geoge Rouse and wife and grandfather Daniel Barlow born in Va near Culpepper Court house and moved to Boone Co Ky. (2 pages)

The ones below seem to be grouped together as I've grouped them. I would presume that these files in the groups would go to a researcher as a unit.

Group 1:
Smith – Thomas Leslie Smith, Missouri, born Pittsylvania Co, Va to John Wesley Smith and Sally Saunders Claytor Leftwich
Leftwich – Bedford Co., Va.
Gregory – includes Minter, Adair Co., Ky, other Ky counties, Powhatan Co, Va., John Gregory Rev War Vet, (quite a bit of research)
Minter – Fayette County, Ky, Powhatan Co, Va. (also in the Gregory file)

Group 2:
Bolander – Stephen Bolander b 1756 Lancaster Co Pa m Magaretha Shinkle (small file, letters)
Shinkle – Colorado, South Dakota, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa and Illinois
Bush – Catherine Bush m Philip Jacob Shinkle in Brush Valley, Center Co., Pa. (one letter only)
McConnell – Arthur in Washington Pa, then to Ky, Ohio and Indiana and then his children and grandchildren to Illinois and Iowa, John McConnell served in War of 1812 from Ohio Militia, Brown Co. Ohio
Luing – intermixed in other files
Watson – two lines, one from Oxford who never left England and one from York and Lincoln who came to the western US in the 1920s (small file, letters)
Wyatt – intermixed in other files
Logan – in the same file as Gregg, Pennsylvania, Jefferson Co., Indiana
Gregg – in the same file a Logan, Pennsylvania, Jefferson Co., Indiana

Group 3 – the familes below are all intermingled in one file – Kittaning, Armstrong Co., Pa, Mercer Co., Pa, various Pa, Va and NC counties, also Missouri,
Hellam – George Curtis Hellam m Mary Ellen Hawk
Peat – Oran Peat b 1899 m Gutherie Faye in Pa
Hawk – Daniel Hawk m Magdalena Bricker
Welton – intermarried with the above families

Group 4
Godley – Quaker, Farquier Co, Va, Georgia, Anderson Co., Tx (much research) – also see Peacock
Peacock – from Nottingham England, never came to America, Elizabeth m George Godley and their dau Sarah came to the us in 1924.

I know it's been quite a long time since you were on the Ancestry message board, but am hoping you are still 'dabbling'! We have a connection:

My ggg grandmother was Sarah Godley b. 1829 Pyecombe (sister of your ggg grandmother, Elizabeth Godley, who married Philip Corney).

Sarah married John Lidbetter b. 1819 Beeding Sussex in 1848.
In 1861 they were landlords of the Anchor Inn, Barcombe, Sussex. In 1871 census he's an AG Lab, & in 1881 a greengrocer. He died in Lewes, 1886.

The really interesting bit is that on the 1891 census his wife Sarah (nee Godley) is Innkeeper at the Bull Hotel, Ditchling, previously run by your ggg grandmother!

I only discovered the link today when researching the Bull Hotel & found an enquiry left by you in about 2000, so I hope this finds its way to you all this time later.

PS Sarah Godley was my ancestor through my father's maternal side of the family. He is 81 this year & lives in Kent, England, as do I.

I am looking into my family tree and have found a John Goddley who ran a public house in Brighton during the eraly 1900's. He had a daughter named Laura Ruth Godley.

Back in January 2007 I decided to trace the Godley family (the wife's family) I have a lot of gaps to fill then I came across your posting the Godley's of Derbyshire as I've only got as far back as the 1881 census listing George Godley head Blacksmith born Whitwell Derby and his family see 1881 census RG11/4671 FN 48 page 40 His son George is my wife's grandfather. Rank and organization: First Sergeant, Company E., 22d Iowa Infantry. Place and date: At Vicksburg, Miss., 22 May 1863. Entered service at: Ashland, Iowa. Birth: Mason County, W. Va. Date of issue: 3 August 1897. Citation: Led his company in the assault on the enemy's works and gained the parapet, there receiving 3 very severe wounds. He lay all day in the sun, was taken prisoner, and had his leg amputated without anesthetics.

Stella Crepps Godley married James Ridgeway April 20, 1918 when both of them were living in Muskegon, MI. Her father was David Crepps. In 1880 David Crepps was living in Ohio. At that time Stella (Della) was 7 years old.

SAMUEL GODLEY c.1747 - LOUISA GODLEY 1878

My husbands grandma was Louisa Godley b. 1878 she married Joseph Hayes b. 27/11/1875 Sheffield.

Louisa's parents were Stephan Godley and Eliza Upton.

Stephan's parents were Emanuel Godley b. 1836 and Lucy Tenny.

Emanuel's parents were William Godley b. 1794 and Philadelphia Convine. (William may have had two brothers, both called Samuel but one may have been a well known soldier in the battle of Waterloo. Still researching this!)

William's parents were possibly Samuel Godley b. 1747 & Ann Pacey?

Most of the Godleys, upto the late 1800's in my husbands line, were living in Whitwell, Derbyshire.

Any info on them is much appreciated.

Do you have nay knowledge of an Olivia Godley. She was either from Tx. or one of the Carolinas. I believe her parents were from there. She died in about 1915 of pneumonia. That was in Texas. She was also believed to be indian.

I a few obits of my family, which is decended from Godlewski line, I noticed some of the people have changed the name to Godley. Anyone out there whose name was changed from Godlewski to Godley?? My Godlewskis came to the US in the early 1900's and settled on the south side of Chicago. Martin (Marcin) Godlewski was my grandfather, Joseph Godlewskis was my gr-father's brother. Jesse Godley was the son of Elias Godley and Lydia Pearce. He is a descendant of Nathan Godley, as am I.

Lydia was the daughter of Lazarus and Elizabeth Pearce.

I have just started to research my husbands side of our family tree. He has a Louisa Godley b.1877/78 married to Joseph Hayes ( my husbands grandad) on 6/6/1897 at the Parish Church in the Parish of Wicker, Sheffield. During my research I thought I had found Louisa's ancestors back to 1805 but now I'm not so sure I have the right line. My first line has 'Stephen' Godley as Louisa's father (he is deceased on her marriage cert) on receiving a birth cert. for the only Louisa of that birth period it says father is William Stephen? On the 1881 census we have a Louisa of that birth year with parents William & Harriett (my 2nd line of research!!). William born Farnsfield, Notts and Harriett of Bakewell Derbys. Now the 1st line I have researched says that 'Stephen' is from Whitwell, Derbys. My cousin is looking for more info on this for me and I hope to clear this up soon. I am on Genes re-united, if you are a member you will be able to see our tree. I update it regularly as things tend to change a bit!!!

Don't know if this is of any help. I am researching my husbands Godley line. So far I have his grandma Louisa Godley b.1878 married to Joseph Hayes of Sheffield. Louisa's father was Stephen but this is currently under investigation. I have loosely traced a line back to Samuel Godley b.abt. 1747 possibly in Whitwell, Derbyshire, who was a SHOE MAKER, married to Ann Pacey 8 Jan 1776. One of their children was quite possibly Samuel Godley the 'Waterloo Warrior'.

Under investigation is the following:
Robert Godley b.abt 1691 mar. Margaret 14 Feb 1716

Robert (son of above) chr 1717 Whitwell, Derby mar. Mary. They are the parents of Samuel b. 1747 (shoe maker)

Hope this makes sense!!

Awaiting a cert. to find out which Stephen is Louisa's dad.

I too was thrilled to find this photo, I was researching this name and our family was from the Easton area...when I saw the picture I knew she had to be related, Clara looks so much like my mom and Great Aunts, turns out I'm 99.9% sure she is my mom's Great Aunt, tonight I was going through my grandfather's old recipes and one was from Aunt Clara!!! I'm trying to fing ancestry of William Godley born Brighton area c.1878.

1901 Census has him as 23 yrs old, private in Royal Sussex Regiment barracked in Dover. Have his wedding cert. married Marian Prevett in Preston (Brighton) 1906 and shows his father also William (deceased).

Have found a potential father in a William Godley born 1853 in Pyecombe, Sussex (close to Brighton) with Thomas and Mary as Parents but this is pure speculation.

Would be great to hear from anyone who thinks they can help.

If you look at the Sussex Family History Group website www.sfhg.org.co.uk and go the members interests look for Godley researchers and contact Gary Godden. I have contacted him before and he has the Pyecombe Godleys.
I also have another Godley contact but can't find her details at the moment. I've got two Godley families and can't find th connection between Pyecombe and brighton at the moment.
