Rozell Walker married to Loren Godsey

I obtained a copy of my grandparents' (Talley and Berry) marriage record in Conroe, Montgomery Co., Texas today. Attached at the bottom, which surprised me, was another marriage record. I was further surprised when the clerk insisted I take the entire 2 records. She thought it was unique that the two unions took place on the same day.

At any rate, I have no need for the marriage record of Rozell Walker and Loren Godsey, as I am not related to them. So, to whomever replies to my thread is welcome to this record. Contact me and I will snail mail this to you free of charge (1st class postage in envelope).

A few details of the Walker/Godsey Union:
Montgomery Co., Texas
April 11, 1943
Baptist Church Conroe
Pastor Thos A Gray
Purchased on April 9, 1943, filed April 14, 1943.

Regards, Marsha Goodwin
mgoodwin@nctv.com

Hello,

I saw this posting from some time ago and hope this message finds you. My name is Ralph M. Godsey I am the son of Donald R. Godsey and Grandson of Aillen and Joseph Clyde Godsey and Great Grandson of Leanna and Clyde Godsey of the lower MO boot heal area.

I have the data to show where Clyde (Clide) Godsey married Leanna (Lee A.)Edwards on 9/5/1917 in Tipton CO, TN and together they had five children Triby Godsey-Nichols, Clara L. Godsey-Self, Ethel Godsey, Joseph Clyde "JC" Godsey, & Maxey Godsey.

I have also found a prior marrage for Clyde also in Tipton Co, TN to a Etta (Etter) Cross dated 8/18/1897. This marrage produced five children as well; Willie Godsey, Paul D. Godsey, Bessie Godsey-Stafford, Lillie Godsey, and Nettie Godsey.

What I cannot find however is any links backward from Clyde Godsey or Leanna Edwards Godsey. The 1930 Census in Concord, MO Pemiscot CO has them listed and show all the children I know of. It also shows both he and his parents were from TN and she was from TM however her father was from IL and her mother was from MI.

It is clear from the other posts that Clyde's First name may have been Odgen and that it all matches. If anyone has some linking data I would love to have it.

Thanks
Tricia,
I am familar with the Godseys(Augustus and Judith) in that I am a great-great grandson of William R. It is my understanding that William R. and his 2 sisters were children of Judith when she married Augustus, then had children of their own. While I do not know this as a fact, family history thru my mother Lucy Charity Godsey b.1917, and still living, told me something of the family. I am in Alabama as many of the Godsey have been nd some still are.
Do you know where Augustus and Judith are buried?

Wayne Taylor

I have learned that Alice Godsey ,before she married Andrew Woodward, had a son named James Edward Smith. The Woodward family had a photo of him as an adult wearing a cablecar or streetcar cap and uniform. It was known by Alice and Andrews children that they had a half brother. It is not known if Alice raised him.Do not know now if Alice was married once ,twice or three times and do not know if Godsey was her maiden name as cant find her in a census until 1930. It is known she was born in Bristol,VA and lived in Sullivan co,tn ,possibly Piney Flatts ,then Johnson City area.In 1930 census she and Andrew are listed as being born in PA.,which we know is not correct.Theres a story here and maybe a coverup by Alice .I'm at a deadend. Any clues ,help ,would be greatly appreciated .I have a photo of her if any one else is related to her and would like me to email it to them. ava woodward

Augustus W. Godsey/Judith Alderson

My husband is a descendent of Robert Asa Godsey, son of Augustus and Judith.
I have many questions about the family!
Ancestry.com's database, Virginia Marriages 1740-1850, gives the date of marriage for Gus and Judith as 22 Aug 1838, Powhatten Co, VA, but I have seen it listed as a much earlier date. Judging by his age on the 1850 census, I have serious doubts about the earlier date.
Of the 7 "children" listed on the 1850 census, Gus does seem to have been old enough to have fathered the oldest three, Mary, Catherine, and William R. There is a 9 year gap between William R. and Robert Asa, further suggesting that something's not quite right there. Could these have been Gus' siblings or something?? All we born in VA.

HELP! Someone please help me get this family straight! It's boggling my mind now.
Also, I have been unable to locate Judith on the 1860 census. Can someone point me in the correct direction.

Thanks in advance!

Hey Kristine,
My name is Bill Marquez, one of Bil Godsey’s sons. You may want to contact my half sister Lilith (Lisa) Swetland. She has spent a considerable amount of time doing our family tree on the Godsey side. Her e-mail address is: lilith@netidea.com I will be happy to send you photo’s that I have of my half brothers and sister, e.g.; Linda, Kevin, Gloria, Cynthia and Karen of his first marriage, Lisa of his second marriage, myself, and also of Christine and Jeremy of his last marriage. How are you related to Bil?

Bill
Date of death and location of burial unknown.

Sarah Godsey, her age and marital status vary with each census. Are there bastards court records for her children? Who is their father, same father?Alice Godseys death record says her father is James Godsey and mother Sarah MNU,but i wonder if Alices son didnt get Alices brother mixed up with her father?

Martha A Godsey Pealer married at either 14 or 16,but appears to have been a very proper lady.I can find only a son Willie(William) for her ,but she had 5 grandchildren-George,John,William,Walter,Mattie.

John(Godfrey)Godsey,we have an overabundace of John Godseys and are not sure anymore who is whom.We have the one called Godfrey on the 1860 census i feel sure but cant prove belongs to Nancy because of the surname spelling. We have one born about 1836.We have a death record obtained by Bob Shell for a John Godsey,Sullivan Co,Tn district 9. Piney Flats DOB 03-25-1838.DOD- 08-19-1925. Widowed,Farmer,Born TN. Parents-John Godsey b TN.,Nancy Godsey b Tn.Informant J.W.Humphreys,dont know his relationship.Which John Godsey married Mary Elizabeth Smith in 1879? What relationship did Mary Elizabeth have to Alice Godsey that Mary Elizabeth had a photo of Alices oldest daughter,Sadie; as a young women,in her personal effects, found by her grandaughter Toni Smith Phillips? That would seem to make a strong case that Nancy's John(Godfrey)Godsey was Mary Elizabeths spouse?

The Barr family and Nancy Jane and William Godsey. We feel very confident that Nancy Jane was Nancys daughter, her family lived next door to Nancy,Martha,or Sarah their entire lives, even with David and Nancy Janes son ,John living next door to them.Caroline Barr, Davids sister married William Godsey, they are on the 1860 Sullivan Co,Tn census as ages 26 and 24.On the 1870 census Caroline is listed as head of household. It is probable that William died during the Civil War.Caroline later married a Hickok. It is not unreasonable to theorize that siblings would marry siblings, but we have no proof.

Elizabeth Brisco, was she perhaps a married daughter of Nancys who had a little brother living with her and her husband and helping with the farm chores or was John only a hired hand?Perhaps a Brisco researcher knows Elizabeths maiden name?

JW Smith-what do his initials stand for?did he die?Is that why Sarah raised his son Ed?What happened to Ed?I have a picture that may be him or his father,if anyone has any info on him.
Finding this family on the 1850 census might answer a lot of our questions.Does anyone recognize this family?
If anyone has any information regarding this family or can do any lookups of info I(Alice Godsey),Bob Shell(Nancy Jane Godsey) and Toni Smith Phillips(John Godsey) would greatly appreciate it. Thanks,Ava Woodward

Re: Godsey Familly History

Hi Wilma,You and Roy Godsey seem to be the most knowledgeable and helpful Godsey experts and im hoping you might be able to help.Roy Godsey has not been able to find this person either and has posted queries about her too.Her name was Alice Godsey b abt 1872/73 in Bristol,VA.She married JW Smith,May19,1888 in Sullivan Co according to records. They had a son-James Edward Smith. In 1894 she married Andrew F Woodward in Bristol,VA.I can find her in the census with Andrew from 1900 on.Ican trace them from Carter,Sullivan and Washington co,Tn till she died on Unaka Ave ,in Johnson City in 1959.Buried Monte Vista ,in Johnson City. Andrew and Bill Woodwards death notices mention James Edward Smith.Idont know who JW Smith was. What is so frustrating(i've been looking for 2 1/2 yrs)is that on the 1880 census, which Alice should be on ,she is nowhere to be found -no one matches in that region with her general date of birth,no Godsey or Smith census has any derivation of either her given or surname ,no Godsey girl with the middle initial A,married a Smith or Woodward.I do suspect that she may have been Native American or even Mulatto.I have no death notice for her,no indication of who could have been her parents. Was she someones natural child, was she trying to hide her race, was she a Godsey cousin visiting Piney Flats who married a local boy and stayed, did she marry a Godsey, then Smith and Woodward in a 8 yr timeframe??That's a busy lady!Have you ever come across an Alice Godsey from that region?(she is not Alice Combs)If you could give me any inkling of who might be her parents it would make my year! She was my husbands greatgrandmother and only direct descendent i have not been able to find.Much Thanks.Ava Woodward

I've just started searching my Godsey family history. My great grandfather was William Henry Godsey who grew up in Powhatan, VA. He later worked for the railroad and resided in Richmond, VA. I believe his parents may have been Peter Godsey and Eliza Trent. Do you know of any other information?

It's interesting that you indicated that Alice Godsey may have been Native American or Mulatto, because Elizabeth Jane Godsey (born Scott County, Virginia March 1833) may have been, too. She was my great grandmother's mother-in-law and my great grandmother remembered Elizabeth Jane as being dark and possibly of some type of "mixed blood". However, in the Federal Census, Elizabeth Jane is listed as being white. I have no idea if these two women were related in some way, but thought I would let you know.
