Services for Abe Goertzen of 210 S.19th Street, Caldwell, Idaho, who died January 1, 1982, in a Boise hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell, by the Rev. Earl D. Shaffer of the Oregon Trail Church of God, Caldwell. Interment will follow in Canyon Hill Cemetery, Caldwell.
He was born September 17, 1899 in Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada, to Cornelius and Catherine Friesen Goertzen. When he was 3 months old, he moved with his family to Mountain Lake, Minnesota. In 1905, the family moved to Aberdeen, where he was reared and educated. He worked on his family's dry-land farm for several years and also for other farmers. He married Margaret Wiens on January 30, 1921 in Twin Falls, where they lived for a short time until moving to American Falls. In 1922, they returned to Twin Falls. They later moved to Penrith, Washington. They returned to the American Falls area in 1925. In 1942, they moved to the Dixie area near Caldwell, where they farmed. They moved to Caldwell in 1949. He worked for the Idaho Highway Department from 1950 until retiring in 1963.
Survivors include his wife of Caldwell; 5 daughters, Leona Neal of American Falls, Lena Gray of Caldwell and Vi Sturman, Dorothy Shell and Verla Butler, all of Boise; 5 sons, John of Boise, Leonard of Pocatello, Robert "Buzz" of Lewiston, Richard of Nampa and Larry of Harrington, Washington; 4 brothers, Jake of Stettler, Alberta, Henry of Boise, Frank of Coaldale, Alberta, and Dave of Lethbridge, Alberta; a sister, Susie Boldt of Dalmeny, Saskatchewan, Canada; 36 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; a step grandchild; 2 step great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, a sister, a grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
