I'm sorry, I have no information of your ancestors. I have been tracing my Goetz family as far as I can from Souffleheim, Alsace (just across the Rhine river from Baden, Germany), by ordering and looking at the birth, death & marriage microfilms at the Family History Library.

Have you tried their website? familysearch.org.

Have you tried looking at the German microfilms from the Family History Library from the Karlsruhe, Baden area?

I do not see much by Searching through the various Karlsruhe genealogy sites by searching for the words: Karlsruhe genealogy.

Good luck.

hello,
You know a great deal about the Goetz family and I am hoping you can help me out. I had a great grandmother named Karolina Goetz who was from Karlsrhue, and evidently told stories of going into the Black Forest to take lunch to her father. She was a bit of a renegade and came to America, in about 1890, met and married a man named George Dietz in Chicago, had three children, the elder son- my grandfather, Herman Jacob b. 1891. I cannot seem to get anywhere with my Karlsrhue gr granmother( a fearsome lady who lived to her mid nineties!) She was not inclined to talk about her homeland at all. Evidently she had lots of sisters. Cant seem to find my Gr grandfather, George Dietz' ancestors either. All I know of him is that he was born in Berlin. Can you help me or direct me to someone who could? I would be most appreciative.
Holly

Goetz in Alsace, France

from the Alsace book of names,

"Even before 1405, the name Gotz is found in Mulhouse, Alsace. In second half of XV century , Nicolas Goetz often changes vocation: he is goldsmith in Selestat, Alsace, then a printer in Strasbourg, Alsace before becoming a theologist at Cologne, Germany. In 1501, in Strasbourg, Paul Goetz is a printer. In 1560, in Colmar, Alsace, Jean Goetz becomes middle-class. In 1616, in Soultz, Alsace, Wendel Goetz is mayor. Several bearers of the name lived in Switzerland, like Jean Getz who maried Veronique Schmid in Merxheim in 1693 . The name is quite present at XVII th century at Altkirch, Alsace, in the XVIII th century at Pfaffenheim, Alsace, and Sainte Croix-en-Plaine, Alsace, and in the XlXth century in Zellenberg, Alsace.

Common name in Forstheim, (Bas-Rhin, Alsace), Lingolsheim, (Bas-Rhin,Alsace), Rumersheim-le-Haut. (Haut-Rhin, Alsace)

There was once certain Francois Goetz (1728-1813), born in Gueberschwihr, Alsace, who, as a doctor, he had the honor to vaccinate Elisabeth, sister of Louis XVI against variola, in Versailles, in 1780. He is then called to the Court of Piedmont. During his career. he would vaccinate more than 35,000 people. "
Goetz origins

I can trace my line of the Goetz family to Alsace, France. I have read that the Goetz name is listed as its origin - Drussenheim & Schuerheim - Alsace. Is this true, or was it Soufflenheim, where my family appears to have came from?

It appears from Brian J. Smith's history of the area that Catholic families (as were the Goetz) settled in Alsace from their homes in Germany about 1648. Many left Alsace and fled back to to Germany during the "Great Flight",

From Brian J. Smith on Alsace on the web: "Alsace was independent in 1600, although maybe it was considered part of the Holy Roman Empire. Most of its inhabitants were Protestant and spoke German.

The Thirty Years War (1618-1648) caused dramatic changes in Europe. Germany and Alsace were especially affected. The war involved many of the countries of Europe, and was primarily a contest between Catholic rulers and Protestant rulers. Alsace was among the battlegrounds.

Perhaps one third of the people of Germany lost their lives during the war. Many Alsatians lost their lives, and I believe many others fled. As a result, by 1648 Alsace was largely unpopulated. During the next couple decades, new people moved in from southern Germany and from Switzerland. Many of the new settlers of Alsace were Catholic. (such as the Goetz family)

The French Revolution in 1789 affected Alsace no less than it affected all of France and all of Europe. In Alsace, many citizens were executed in the guillotine during the Reign of Terror. The church was suppressed.

In October 1793, Prussia and Austria invaded northern Alsace, as part of their campaign to restore the French monarchy. The French Army drove the invaders out, and then the French Revolutionary goverment threatened reprisals against the Alsatian population, whom they accused of being German collaborators. Alarmed, many people left their homes in Alsace and headed east and north into German territories such as Baden and the Palatinate. This is known as la Grande Fuite, "the Great Flight." Perhaps 40,000 people fled, which would represent nearly 10% of the population of Bas-Rhin (northern Alsace)

I have noted two large emigration movements out of Alsace in the 1800's. The first was a movement to the Odessa region of southern Russia in about 1800-1820. About 100 years later, some of these "German Russians" later came to America.

The second wave of emigration was from Alsace to America. It seems to have begun in the late 1820's, and reached its peak in the 1840's and 1850's. An entire industry emerged to encourage people to make the move. Agents traveled through Alsace advertising the opportunities in America. Carriage services transported families and individuals to the coast, where the travelers boarded ships to the new world. Le Havre in France was the favored port of departure for people departing Alsace for America."
I have been searching through the Soufflenheim records for the Goetz family. Bernard, b. Aug 19 1820, and Matthew b. February 28, 1814 were the sons of Francois Joseph Goetz & Ricarde Uhrich. Their cousin was Xavier (Franz Xavier) Goetz, b. Feb 11, 1822, s/o Martin Goetz & Therese Mittlehauser. The grandparents of Bernard, Matthew & Xavier were Antoine (Francois Antoine) Goetz & Marguarite Mosser.

Many The Goetz of Soufflenheim were potters, as Soufflenheim is famous for pottery making.

Bob Langill

Could someone please tell me what relationship : Heier means on a census record?

I think this Margaretha Goetz is my great grandmother. The year of birth, town and state are correct but she isn't listed with her family, she's listed with the Kleins. An older couple; maybe her grandparents? But it doesn't say grandaughter, it says Heier.

Look: http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=19...

I appreciate any help you could give me.
What a shame you are unable to get that information. I do not know of any present Goetz family members. Although that is not to say they were not part of my ancestry. My Goetz family however all changed their names to GATES as far as I know too. Good luck in your findings. Florence

Looking for any information on a Goetz family who came to America in 1851. Lived in NYC, mother a widow Julia married Joseph Lombard and moved to Colosse, NY, died there. Eugene served in the Civil War. Married Catherine and had about nine children. Lived in NYC and than Newark, NJ. Eugene and wife Catherine spelled their name Gates. Family was from Alsae Lorraine area in France. Catherine's family was also from France. Her mother remarried a Augusta Gelin from France and lived in RI. Maiden name of Catherine may have been Patchen or DeLa Puchon. Catherine's sister Louise was born in Paris, France as may have Catherine. No further information known. If this sounds like any ancestors let me know. Perhaps we can help each other find more.

Thanks...will try that area too. My great great grandmother was Julia Goetz (Gates) so she could be a sister in law. She came to America possibly as a widow in 1851 (shows as widow in 1860 census). She lived in NYC and than married a man named Joseph Lombard, they lived in NJ for a very short while and than moved to Colosse and Mexico, NY.(Oswego County) where there was a large number of French from Alsae Lorraine. I do not know my gr gr grandfather's name other than Goetz. Julia and Joseph are buried in the St. Anne's Catholic Cemetery on French St. in Mexico, NY. We were there in the spring. Her one daughter Linna Goetz is buried there also and the tombstone said she was born in Montbilard, France. I believe from census she was blind at the time of her death and never married. My gr grandfather used the name Gates and lived in NYC, Brooklyn, and than Newark, NJ.
Keep in touch if you find anything as will I.
Florence

Is there any chance that your Ferdinand Gates (Goetz) headed to Prairie Co. Arkansas after New York? After Arkansas, there was a move to Memphis, Tennessee around 1888 or 1889. He had a business with a brother, Isaac, in Arkansas possibly Lonoke, Arkansas, ad 3 other cities in Arkansas before moving to Tennessee.
He had a cousin named Gustav Straus, that went to Arkansas, from Germany to get his business started. Could this be the same guy by any chance?

Hi My name is Toni. My Great Great Grandmother was Mathida Goetz Brohman. She lived in the same area that your Goetz connections lived. Do you happen to have any information on her She was said to have died in the late 1850's however her death date does not coincide with the birth of my Great Grandmother Magdalena Brohman Schwartz. Mathilda is listed as Magdelena's Mother on her death certificate. Mathilda was married to Ignatius Brohman (John Brohman)
Thanks, Toni Bytoni55@msn.com
