JOB S. GOFF
Eugene Reynolds Post. G. A. R.. Delegate, 1890.
The venerable looking individual, whose picture we present at the head of this column, is
resident other than citizen Job 8. Goff, a resident of our city and county since March 15th,1836.
He is an uncle of Gen. Nathan Goff, of West Virginia, who was defrauded out of his election to
the office of Governor of that State. He is a true blue Virginian, though not caring for the
distinction of “F. F. V.,” which he, like many others, translated literally during the war into
fleet footed Virginians,” whether it was Jackson's foot cavalry or Floyd’s skidadlers.
He was born near Clarksburg, Harrison County, Va., April 12, 1807, and a few weeks ago
celebrated his eighty-third anniversary, receiving the congratulations of his many friends.
His father was a pushing business man and gave little attention to the education of his children.
The subject of our sketch received only three months schooling, but by dint of hard work and
observation and close application to books and papers when opportunity offered he acquired
a fair knowledge of the rudimentary branches, and at the age of fourteen entered a three years apprenticeship at the printers trade in the office of the Clarksburg !intelligence, a paper long
since surrendered as a back number.
He went South, was in Texas during the Mexican troubles, resulting in the independence of
Texas, and worked on the old Nat ional Intelligencer, under Gales and Seaton, the establishers
of the Congressional Record. He afterward worked in Pittsburgh and Wheeling, finally getting
back to his old home.
His travel and experience had fitted him for a larger field, and he went to Uniontown, Pa.,
where he started the first paper of that place, the Pennsylvania Democrat, publishing
went to Waynesburg In the same state, starting the Green County Republican.
He was the first to advocate the improvement of the Monongahela River, and exerted much
influence in his paper by favoring the project, and has lived to see the magnificent blessings arising from that Improvement..
He was married to Martha Gardner, March 15,1830, and they have lived together sixty years,
though the past fifteen years Mrs. Goff has been an invalid.
They raised seven children, four of whom are living, two sons and two daughters.
He came to Bellefontaine in 1838, and for two and a half years worked at his trade, under
Hiram B. Strother. He then bought a farm and tilled the soil until the sound to arms in 1881.
He entered the army September 3, l86l, being enlisted in Co. K, of Garfield’s Regiment,
42nd 0. V. I., and served until January 15, 1863, when he was discharged on account of
disability. He returned home and has been engaged in business in our town ever since.
He is a member of Eugene Reynolds Post, G. A. R., and is an enthusiastic worker in the order.
Nothing delights him as much as army talk. He represented the Post in the State Encampment
this year and was rather the “lion of the day” on account of his age. He enjoys the distinction
of being the oldest man on the rolls of that organization within the State, if not in the country.
He was a Whig in early times and has never failed to vote the Republican ticket since that
party came into existence. He has voted sixteen times for president.
He is halo and hearty, walks as spry as a young man, reads without glasses, attends
regularly to business, eats three square meals every day and enjoys good rest at night.
Long live Uncle Job Goff! so say we all."

He was about to graduate from Georgetown College at the beginning of the civil war but left to enlist as a in Company G, Third Virginia Infantry, U.S. volunteers. He was made a lieutenant and participated in the battles of McDowell, Port Republic, Winchester, Droop Mountain, the second battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Rocky Gap, Cross Keys, Rappahannock Station, and others. He was promoted to the rank of major in the 4th Virginia calvary. He served in General Averill's command. On the 20th of Jan 1864 he was taken prisoner at Mooresfield, W.V. and confined for four months to Libby prison. A Confederate major, Thomas D Armsey, had been convicted of and sentenced as a spy to be shot, but later his sentence was commuted by the U.S. to 15 years imprisonment at hard labor. He had been found guilty of recruiting men within the lines of the union forces. The Confederates held Major Goff hostage for Armsey. Major Goff's friends, especially Senator Willey, sought to have Armsey released thus relieving Major Goff from danger. Finally Armsey and Goff were exchanged. When he was released, Secretary Stanton sent for him and took him to see President Lincoln. They both asked Goff for a detailed description of the condition of the prisoners at Libby. Major Armsey was soon captured again and if it had not been for the intersession of Major Goff he would surely have been executed. At the end of the war Major Goff was all of 22 years old and was breveted a brigadier-general of volunteers. He was honorably discharged in 1865.
After the war he continued his education graduating from the Univ. of New York in 2 years. He practiced law in Clarksburg and he was elected to the house of delegates from Harrison county in 1867. He was appointed by President Grant district attorney for the district of W.V. He accepted the secretary of navy under President Hayes in 1881. President Garfield appointed him district attorney of the district of W.V. but he resigned in 1882.
He had been nominated to congress twice and defeated, in 1870 and 1872. In 1876 the Republican party nominated him to run for governor. He made a fine run but in those days the Republican party was not popular in the south. He was defeated. In 1882, he was nominated for congress in the first district. He was elected and then reelected again in 1884 and 1886. During these six years General Goff served with distinction, serving on the naval committee and others. In 1888, he was nominated again to be the Republican choice for governor. On the face of the returns he was elected by a plurality of the votes. The Democratic nominee contested the election and the legislature finally gave the election to the Democrat, Mr. Fleming.
In the days of his political activity, no other man so fully represented the fighting forces of W.V. Republicanism, while the Republican party was still a minority party in this state. His reputation as a speaker and debater was natonal. In 1884 and again in 1888 he was chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. His heart in all these years was more in the judicial than in the legislative sphere. President Harrison appointed him U.S. Circuit Judge of the fourth circuit in 1892.
The Waldo Hotel, of Clarksburg, one of the finest hotels south of the Mason-Dixon line was built by Judge Goff on property owned by his father, Waldo Potter Goff. He also built the Goff building, a fine office building for its day....

Chapter XVIII: Victory in West Virginia
Excerpt From the book about Mother Jones ! about the First Coal Mine Strikes in West Virginia..
****
The next day in Washington, the matter of congressional inquiry in the West Virginia mines
came up for discussion in the Senate.
Senator Goff from Clarksburg, who had stock in the coal mines of West Virginia, got up on the
floor and said that West Virginia was a place of peace until the agitators came in. "And the
grandmother of agitators in this country," he went on, "is that old Mother Jones! I learn from
the governor that she is not in prison at all but is only detained in a very pleasant boarding house!"
Senator Kearns rose. "I have a telegram from this old women of eighty-four in this very pleasant boarding house," said he. "I will read it."
