Re: Goff, Gough, Goffe why the different spellings?

Different spellings are due to who is writing it. People of different heritages will spell phonically, or if a person has a lisp or other speech problem it's not coming out right. And, then there is the transposing of the letters as they are writing it out. Sometimes when census takers were filling out paper work they just didn't have all the education that was required. I remember most of this from another question posed.

I'm helping a friend research her Goff family. She insisted that hers was spelled with E at the end. We were able to determine that the E was added in about 1914, not sure if it was the mother or her sons. Someone said GoffE was English, I'm not sure what Goff is (without the E) - Irish maybe? She also stopped using Lizzie and was recorded as Elizabeth - maybe she was reinventing herself, as she had moved from a wild mining town to a more pastoral area of Montana.

Plus the name changes help add to the challenge for those of us trying to find them.

Re: Goff, Gough, Goffe why the different spellings?

In the United States, genetic testing has demonstrated that the Gough and Goff (and Gawf) surnames were interchangeble. As you pointed out, someone may start out life with one spelling and end up with another. The change in spelling appears to be related to migration during a person's lifetime. If they lived in the same place, the spelling likely did not change. The changed spelling in the new location may have been caused by the experience of the local county clerk.

In the UK, I've only seen exmaples of a transition from Goffe to Goff, but also at least one hint of a conversion from Goffe to Gough.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why the different spellings of the name? Location, census taker, family rift?

My Great-Great-Grandfather, Isaac Goff (Gough), born 1803 VA, died 1890 Circleville, Pickaway, OH (wife Elinore Simmerman). His son, my Great-Grandfather, John Goff, died 1936 Circleville, OH (wife Rosa Lemley). My Grandfather, Allen O Goff, died Columbus Hospital September 19, 1958 (wife Grace Frazier).

I find Isaac born Gough but died Goff.

Thanks!

Yipppy Skipppy! I have been researching this for what seems like years. I think we have a connection of some sort here. Goff- Janie and Donie were sisters, Donie was born in 1885, don't know about Janie. Janie and Donie both married White's, but they were no relation. Janie married "Hos" or William White (They called him Hoss) and Donie (My GGrandmother) married Bengiman Wiley White. I can't find them as "Goffs" anywhere except marriages and on Donie's headstone. Janie is buried in Henry county...Newville, I believe!
Good luck!

Hasani,

Two points for your consideration:

1) The National Geographic project is fantastic - I also belong to it. However, this project is not designed for genetic genealogy, but rather for deep ancestry - think 5,000 to 25,000 years ago. I urge you to reconsider and join the Goff/Gough Surname DNA Study through Family Tree DNA. You can transfer your results to the NGS project.

2) You and your brother likely share a nearly identical Y-chromosome. Your deep ancestry results from the NGS project will be identical since it is based on haplogroup rather than haplotype comparisons.

Perhaps one brother can join NGS and the other the Goff/Gough Surname DNA Study. As administrator of the project, I stand ready to help you interpret your results, both within the time of surnames and deep ancestry.

Good luck. Thanks,

Phil

I am seeking male Goff/Gough descendants of John Goffe (1649-1716) of Boston to participate in the Goff/Gough Surname DNA Study. One descendant, through John's son, Squire John Goffe m. Hannah Parish, has been tested. John Goffe had three other surviving married sons: Samuel m. Hannah Tedman, William m. Abigail Richardson, and Joseph m. Elizabeth Baker.

Participating will further document your lineage and potentially allow the genealogy to be taken back in time more generations. Please respond if you know of any descendants.

Thanks,

Phil Goff
Hasani,

The Goff/Gough Surname DNA Study includes Goff/Gough families from Kanawha Co., WV and Buckingham Co., VA. I urge that a male Gough from your family (and others) join the project, which now has over 80 members. Doing so will provide scientific evidence of whether you are connected to over a dozen identified genetically distinct Goff/Gough families, including the ones you mentioned. Here's the link to join:

http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?code=K13572&amp...

Thanks,

Phil Goff

***************
Bacon and Allied Families
----
Author: J. Dean Bacon
Call Number: CS71.B13x
This is a family directory of the Bacon and other tied families.
Bibliographic Information: Bacon, J. Dean.
Bacon and Allied Families.
Murray & Gee Inc., Culver City, California - 1958
***************
Extensive data regarding the descendants of JONATHAN GOFF and LYDIA HARDING, GOFF is set forth on the following pages, together with the ancestry of LYDIA HARDING, GOFF. Of particular interest are the MAYFLOWER Lineages of HOPKINS and ROGERS, ancestors of HANNAH ROGERS, HARDING. The Harding family history in America, starts in Plymouth, and Eastham, Massachusetts, thence to Middle Haddam, and Middletown, Connecticut.
------
Henry K. Goff writes: "Great grandfather DAVID GOFF was in the Revolutionary army. Nine soldiers went on a scouting expedition, took three days rations, got lost in the woods, were gone nine days, the last three days lived on what they could gather from the woods, returned hungry and were given a feast from which eight of them died. Grandfather got home but died. He had four sons in the army; two regular soldiers; two enlisted as teamsters and drove ox teams for LaFayette's Army from Connecticut to Yorktown, and were there at the surrender. As to the history of DAVID GOFF and his four sons that were in the army; what I have learned and written about them was told me by my father and Harriet Goff when she was an invalid and lived in our family until I was 17 years old."
From the above it appears that David Goff had a large family, and we regret that we only have data on one of his sons, JONATHAN.
************
Bacon and Allied Families
----
Author: J. Realtors, 111 E. 5th Street.
----
John W. Goff under date of Feb. 20, 1932 provides the following:
---
"Would it add anything or be of interest if I add to my personal record the following? I enlisted August 30, 1862 as private in Company G, 146th New York Volunteer Infantry and was discharged July 12, 1865 as SERGEANT in same company and regiment. I was in the major battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorville, the Wilderness and several minor engagements. At the battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864 I was taken prisoner and for nearly ten months confined in the Confederate military prisons at Andersonville, Georgia and Florence, South Carolina. I was paroled in the Spring of 1865, came into the Union lines at Wilmington, North Carolina and was sent by transport to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, then converted into a hospital. I was reduced by starvation and exposure as to be only semi-conscious. I can recollect seeing the United States flag at Wilmington and many negro soldiers who had participated in the capture of the city a few days before. I have in my possession an original letter to my father, from someone unknown to me, from the hospital, advising him, `Your son, John Goff, late a prisoner of war, is at this hospital. He is very sick and I do not think he will live long.' I have been active in the civic and business life of Fremont during my residence here. Served two terms as City Clerk and two terms as Assessor For forty-four years I was associated with the real estate firm of Richards, Keene & Co. and its predecessors. Have been Vice President and President of the Security Savings Bank. In 1924 I disposed of part of my interest and retired from active business."
-----
John W. Goff also writes: "Based on my conversation with my father and his brothers and this record in the War Department, I applied for membership in the Sons of the Revolution and my application was approved. Later my daughter applied for membership in the D.A.R. and they required that she furnish the name of David Goff's wife. This she could not do and I have written several parties around Haddarn, Middle Haddam and East Haddam, but can get no information
(Don't apply for membership in the D.A.R. without this proof)"
-----
Re: conversation referred to above: "No, I have no satisfactory proof back of Jonathan Goff. In converaation with my father and his brothers they seemed to think his name was David and also that he was a soldier in the Revolutionary Army. The records in the War Department at Washington disclose the name of David Goff as belonging to a Connecticut regiment.
This seems to corroborate the recollection of my father and uncles, but there is no information regarding his service except the mere record of his name and regiment."
-----
HIRAM GOFF FAMILY.
HIRAM GOFF Born March 5, 1807, Augusta, Oneida County, New York.
Son of JONATHAN GOFF and LYDLA HARDING.
Married IRENE CORNELIA MILLER Jan. 9, 1833, Deansboro, New York.
Daughter of ISAAC MILLER III and IRENE GREEN.
-----
4312-4-1 LYDIA IRENE GOFF, b.
Both of Pearl Goff's parents, Enoch A. Goff & Ardella L. Allen, are related to me. Enoch is the brother of my great grandmother and Ardella is my 2nd cousin 3 times removed. I'd be glad to share what information I have on their family, back to the mid 1700's on the Allen side and 1690 on the Goff side.

There is a short account of John Goff on a Buffalo hunt in the Stevens County (Kansas) history book. It tells of the naming of Goff Creek (the one in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Goff and C. J. "Buffalo" Jones and others apparently headquartered out of Granada Colorado along the mountain route of the Santa Fe Trail. They began the hunt going east up the trail to John O'Laughlin's store at Lakin, Kansas where the dry route of the Trail was picked up. They then followed it South to Wagon Bed Springs on the Cimarron River and departed the Trail heading Southwest to an area near present day Guymon, Oklahoma where they picked up the creek a little ways from the Beaver (North Fork of the Canadian)River.
John Goff and Buffalo Jones were both picked by Teddy Roosevelt to be "game management" specialists at a place he was working on called Yellowstone.
His maternal grandmother was an Armstrong from New York State; we have much info on this maternal line, which we're pleased to share....
