Hi,
I am Valerie's lst cousin,Suzanne Gougherty... its been a few years now that you have been in touch with each other per the posting. I just returned from NYC and have been doing research on the Gougherty Family. I have come across some documention on my Grandfather, Thomas Gougherty and his brother Edward Gougherty - and their father Daniel Gougherty, and his mother Marie Gougherty.

I have made other discoveries as well. My father is William Thomas Gougherty born 1920 in Michigan. My dad's siblings were: Robert, James and Catherine. Catherine is Valerie's mother, and of course my Aunt.

There are many first names in the Gougherty clan that remain the same-- generation after generation. And as a child I remember my father talking about the importance of caring on those first names. Names such as: Daniel, Thomas, Robert, William, etc. We still carry those names in our Gougherty family tree.

Let me know if you are interested in talking with me. The best to you and your family.
Best regards,
Suzanne Gougherty. Daughter of William T. Gougherty, mentioned above.

Hello! My Name is Annemarie Gagel-Weers. Katherine I. Gogarty married my (widowed) Grandfather James M. Gagel in 1922. My Grampa Gagel's first wife, and the biological mother to her and James Gagel only child (my dad, Robert J. Gagel), died in the Flu Epidemic in 1921. Her name was Jennie. My dad, only 18 Months old at the time Jennie died, was placed in a boy's boarding school, St. Agnes, by my Grampa Gagel and where Katherine Gogarty was a nurse. She immediately loved my dad as her own and her and my Grandfather fell in love and were married in 1922. They had children with each other. Katherine was a wonderful mom to my dad. He adored her so much that when he married my mother in 1946, on their Marriage Certificate, under "Mother's Name", my dad wrote Katherine Gogarty Gagel instead of the name of his biological mother. My Mom and Dad (who are still alive as I write this - October 5, 2007) are still alive and married (61 years) and living in Michigan. Mom is 91 and dad is 87. They had four children together. Dad still speaks lovingly of Katherine, his Mom.

I recently found that my Great Grandmother, Mary Boylan of County Meath was the daughter of Fannie Gogarty and Patrick Boylan. As well as Mary they had 3 sons, Patrick, James and Peter and all came to American in the 1880s. Any connections would be great.

Oh how it makes for excitement to find a long lost relative!!!! I've mailed you a letter by snail mail from the address listed in public records and was fairly certain you were family.....now I'm convinced after reading your old post! My g-g grandparents were Thomas Mullen and Jane Gogarty and they settled near Brookville, KS in a town that was co-founded by Thomas Mullen called Terra Cotta. I am just getting started tracing the ancestors and am hoping that you have more info on James and Mary Gogarty. I hope you are still searching and reply soon!

My husband Peter who is decesased was born of a German Jewish family that fled to this country in 1939. His father was a doctor whose origianl name was Arthur Grischmann which was anglicized upon arrival in the states. There is a very extensive Grishman family tree that goes back several hundred years and was recently linked back form Germany to Odessa..
I do not know how to access it, but my children who are not here, just now do. When they return I will ask them and forward you the information.
My mother is a Gougherty. I have stumbled on your Gougherty line before. My mother's family were from Caledonia New York, fairly near to Rochester. I'm suspecting that there must be a connection. my great grandfather William moved to Michigan (Bad Axe) in 1892 and moved back to New York circa 1905. I have census records going back to the 1850's on this particular line. My grandfather was named Thomas and I believe he was named after an uncle.

Contact me for more info.
I don't know your e-mail address. Mine is valedypett@yahoo.com I prefer messages posted to my e-mail rather than this message board. I know the person looking for descendents of Thomas Francis is definitely a connection, because my great grandfather had a younger brother named Thomas Francis. My grandfather was named after him, as was a cousin of mine. I have quite a bit of research on the Gougherty line. It is at my second home. I will try to remember it the next time I go there. Our family pronounces the name several different ways. Most family members pronounce it Gough- er- ty (as in cow). I have been trying very hard to find out, where in Ireland the original family members immigrated from. No luck. My grandfather used to say it was County Cork. I'm not sure if he really knew, because it was 50 years before he was born. I do know that the family immigrated to Ontario before moving to New York. I have found records for quite a few Goughertys in Ontario. I haven't been able to actually read the census records yet, but I know the reel numbers and if I can access the actual records it might reveal a lot. By the way, if you are connected my uncles had quite a few sons, who had quite a few sons so the Gougherty name is becoming quite widespread.

Carolyn, I left all my geneology papers at my second home. At this point i'm drawing from memory. I will be going there either this or next weekend. My guess is there is a strong connection. A few years ago, I spent a lot of time going through the records. I visited my grandfather's hometown of Caledonia. I found the headstones of my greatgrandfather and some of his brothers (there were quite a few). I do remember finding a Thomas Francis in the records. I figured my grandfather was named after him. I found one of the old family homes still standing. It has a Gougherty ghost. I have also found records of Gougherty's living in Ontario. An elderly uncle remembered that the family lived in Ontario before arriving in New York. I hate to tell you this, but my grandfather was the black sheep of the family. Supposedly he threw his grandmother off a porch. I heard his father was just as mean. My great grandfather owned a hotel/saloon, pre prohibition. I have been trying to locate it but haven't had any luck. A deceased uncle visited there. My grandmother took him there when he was a teen and he returned when he was middle aged. His wife doesn't remember the name of it or where exactly it was at. Many of my Gougherty cousins are fascinated with the family history. We all want to know where in Ireland the family came from. I haven't found any passenger lists with male Goughertys on it. I'm hoping that the Ontario census gives some more clues. I am definitely reenergized to restart the hunt. Sharing information is always great.

Valerie valedypett@yahoo.com

I am having a bit of trouble keeping them all straight. My great grandfather was a William as I believe was his grandfather. My great grandfather's family resided in Caledonia New York for 3-4 generations. The 1880 census shows no additional children.

I also have the 1900 census record for the family of Thomas Gougherty the oldest son from above. It has more detail than the 1860 census.

Name Rel.
Valerie, I am interested in your information on William. I have circumstantial evidence that indicates my Thomas F. Gougherty (b. 1860 NY) had a brother named William. Thomas appears on the census in 1900 Rochester, Monroe Co, NY Census, E.D. 111, sheet 8, line 97. I do not have him in the 1860 or 1870 census and wondered if your census records show a brother to William named Thomas who would have been born 1860? Thanks! - Carolyn

Dear James,
I can't offer much except that my great aunt's husband was a Will Gougherty. He died about 1938, I think. If you go into google and list Gougherty.St. Patrick Church Ada Michigan you'll likely get somewhere. There is a lady named Katie Cook who maintains a website with records of St. Pat's. It's just outside Grand Rapids. There is a book called the "Passing of the Gael" written by a priest of the diocese of Grand Rapids, Fr. McGee. It's likely out of print, but there were Goughertys in the GR area then. Let me know what you find out. I'd prefer direct e-mail. I'm not sure the posting system shows it, but mine is beermaker@cinci.rr.com
Regards, Dave Donovan
BTW, there is a Giglio family in the parish I work in in Cincinnati.

Dear Valerie, I don't think this family line is closely related, but I would be curious how much so. Do you have any idea where in Ireland your branch originated. Because the name is not that common, it's a fair possibility that all of them are somehow related. BTW, how does your family pronounce the name. My relatives said "Goo-ger-tee" with the accent on the first syllable.
If by any chance you ever find out any info on an Emmet, he is our relative whose children changed their names to their stepfather's. As a result, I have several second cousins in Grand Rapids whose names I don't even know. The last relative who might know either died or is very senile.
It is easier to contact me via the e-mail vs. through the message board. Dave

Dear Friend,

My aunt married Will Gougharty. She was born in the 1860's and she and uncle Will probably died in the 1930's or 40's in the Grand Rapids (Kent Co.) area. They spelled their name as I have written it. They pronounced it like GOO-ger-tee. I do not know their place or origin, but there was at least one family by that name, though I cannot recall the spelling) listed in the book "Passing of the Gael" by a Fr. McGee of the diocese of Grand Rapids.
I don't know if I've been any help, but if you know where they came from in Ireland. I have run across another family spelled like our relatives who prounounce their name like
GOFF-er-tee.
If you can tell me where the are from, I'd appreciate knowing it. I am trying to locate relatives born Gougherty, but who took the name of their step-father probably in the late 1930's or 40's. T/I/A Dave

Dear Carolyn, My father had some cousins with your(/our?)relatively uncommon name. Their father was called Will
Gougherty, and he lived in Grand Rapids Michigan probably through the 1930's or 40's. He was married to my great aunt, Katherine (spelling?) Murphy Gougherty. They also had brother Willie, and sisters Lena and Louise. the Goughertys and my aunts lived in Western Michigan. There were two daughters of them, Margaret and Mary Katherine (sp?). Mary K's children were (by Clyde Allen) Jim and Ann Marie. Sons of Kate and Will were Clare who died childless, and Emmet, who had children, but they were adopted by his wife's second husband and they took his name. If you have info on their county of origin in Eire, I'd be appreciative. Dave

Gogarty, Windsor Locks, Connecticut

Some information about the Gogarty family in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. Patrick Gogarty died in Windsor Locks on 1/5/1890 at the age of 73. He lived on Oak Street in Windsor Locks. A History of the Catholic Church of Connecticut published around 1900 lists him and five others as instrumental in the establishment of St. Mary's Church in town. His occupation is listed as a laborer. He married Anna Flood, also of Ireland.
He appears to still have been in Ireland in 1846 when a son Thomas F. Gogarty was born on 12/21/46. I reach that conclusion because Thomas's children list their father's birthplace as Ireland.
Thomas married Ellen Kelly of Ireland. They had at least four children, a stillborn female delivered on 4/23/1892; Matthew J. Gogarty, who died of meningitis on 6/8/1892 at the age of five (what a horrible year for this poor family); Frank Gogarty, a laborer born in 1876 who died at the age of 65 on 2/23/1941 at The Little Sisters of the Poor Hospital in New Haven; and Katherine I. Gogerty who married James Gagel on 6/28/1922 at the age of 43.
Hope the information is helpful.
Chris Kervick
Helen,
It was so great to get your message. I never knew your grandmother's name was Anna -- I always called her Auntie Annie! She was a very nice woman and my brother Jim has always remembered her with great affection. He says she was the kindest hearted person he knew as a child. I also have wonderful memories of your grandfather, Tom Johnson. I know I've met Sonny but think he was older and I never got to know him well. I know your Aunt Helen McGinn and her husband (Charles?) are my youngest brother Donald's godparents. My sister and I get up to the city once or twice a year and if you are anywhere nearby would love to meet you. It sounds like you've done a lot of research already. We've done a lot on Dad's side (not much work actually -- they're a pretty small family). We have a picture of the Gogartys on the roof -- she's about half his size -- but Grandma said that she (Mary K.) always had the final word. It would be wonderful to speak to you. My e-mail is pm@questm.com.
Best regards, Patricia McCready

Gogartys from Meath county, Ireland

My ancesters, James Gogarty and Mary O'Reily left Meath County, Ireland and I have located them in Cincinnati, Ohio about 1853. I think that James was born about 1759. They had two sons who came to the U.S. a few years earlier, Bryan & Patrick. Bryan married Cathrine Callahan and they were my great grandparents. I have not been able to find the area where they entered the U.S. I have been in Meath County twice and have not been able to locate any information. There were stories in the family about a area there called Summerhill. I sent letters (about 70) to all the Gogartys that I could locate in the US, Canada and Australia several years ago. Received many replies, but could not make connection with any of these people.
Both Bryan and Patrick came across the country by working on the railroad. They were given land as payment along the way. From the information that I have gathered, Patrick started the first school in Brookville, Kansas. That is also where Bryan is buried. Like the other Gogartys out there, I would like to know more about the clan. There seem to be some strong characteristics that go with the name. One of the Gogartys who replied to my letter called me from Australa and talking to him made me feel like I was talking to a brother.

My paternal grandfather (her son) Joseph Gogarty Kirk just passed last year at the ripe old age of 94. His wife, my Grammy, Mildred Sullivan passed away 23 days after him.

I'm hoping this may be a link - I'll have to check the dates but the Gogarty's were indeed from West Meath so I'm all excited.
Thanks for the email! It was such a great story. I wonder if they're related. Do you know what his date of birth was (or about when?) or if he had any siblings in WestMeath? Thanks just the same. Good luck
Deirdre

Michael Patrick Gogarty

He was my great-grandfather from Westmeath Co. in Ireland. His daughter, Elizabeth Irene (born in NYC) was my grandmother and told me some very interesting stories about him. He and my great-grandmother Mary (O'Malley, I think) were engaged in Westmeath with the understanding that they would both work and when they had enough money for two tickets to America, they would get married and come over. After a few years, he decided that he would rather stay in Ireland where he had a pretty good job and a lot of friends. She really wanted to leave so they broke the engagement and divided the money and she bought a ticket to NY and left on the first ship over. Back in Ireland his friends suddenly didn't look as interesting without her and he left to find her so quickly that she hadn't had time to write to let her family know where she was, so he had no address to go to. But HE FOUND HER! And they were married and lived happily ever after. I have always loved that story.

I saw a photograph of him once, taken when he was about 60, and most of his descendants look like him. I wonder if other Gogartys from Westmeath have that same family resemblance. I have not really begun to look at the family in Ireland . . . just finding the ones in NYC is hard enough!

Do you know of Gogarty's in Ireland?

My paternal great grandmother
Annie T. Gogarty was from County West Meath in Ireland. I was so thrilled to see a connection of the name in West Meath I thought I'd write - to everyone. I wonder if there is any relation? She must have been born late 1880, 1890s and married Patrick Kirk (from County Louth) and they came to the US and gave birth to my grandfather Joseph Gogarty Kirk in Boston in 1905. I would like to hear from you if you think there is any connection. Good luck with your search.
Sincerely,
Deirdre Kirk Raeside
