Sorry it's taken me so long to get your messages. I sort of forgot I had been here, if you can believe that. I am trying to find so many of my family that I sometimes forget where I left off.
I am not surprised that you found the info in the Negro book. I have learned that some of my cousins were told that the Goings/Going family were Portugese. So that tells me that they were dark skin. So whether they were indian or black or what ever, they were quiet about it.
I have found that Gggrandfather, James Richard Gongs Sr.was married to Jrances Diedemme Brown. My Ggrandfather was James Richard Goings Jr. born in Glengretchel, GA May 14, 1877. His wife was Ethel Luticia Mashburn born Aug, 23, 1899 in Calvary, GA. At least I think I have all that right. But now once again stuck. Hope you have success.

Don't forget that people of color were called Mulattos, as well as Native American's. If you had a Caucasian father and a Native American Mother, you were listed as a Mulatto. That is why my Grandmother would not tell anyone that she was descended from Native American ancestry. It was not known until after her death. Such a shame, huh? I am very proud of my ancestry.
I believe I am a Guins descendant. My GGrandmother was Charity L. Guins Young (b. 1854-mulatto) who died in the early 1900s in Hampton Co. SC.
I think her parents were Ephraim & Phoebe Goins from Fairfield, SC. I cant link any farther past that. They were all listed as mulattos in the 1860 census. I wonder if they are descendants of Michael Gowen (Gowin), a freed slave in 1657 Virginia, great grandaughter (7-10 generations) is Dora Lucinda Gowin Harless (b. 1870), Mt. Pleasant, W VA

William Going and his wife Susanah together with TWO sons George (18) and John (10) came to Christchurch, New Zealand, on the "Caroline Agnes" sailed 19/4/1855, arrived Lyttelton 17/8/1855.
William died 1863, buried St. Mary's Church Yard, Halswell Chrischurch. Susanah died 31/8/1878 also buried same place.
John married Catherine Mary Dillon 10/12 1870 Catholic Cathedral Christchurch. He died 5/6/1910. Their daughyer Mary Matilda was my Grandmother.

George married Eleanor Mary Downey; parents Patrick Downey and Catherine Dougherty.

A Thomas Going came to Lyttelton, (Christchurch) on the "Castle Eden" arriving 7/2/ 1851. Shown as age 18 on passenger list. This would make him born 1830/31. Sounds like he is your Thomas and he and his brother married into the same family.

I live in Christchurch. Do you want me to investigate further.

I met he and his wife a couple of times when they visted here in GA. He might have moved up north but he was definately a southern gentleman with a fine sense of humor. When did he pass away.
Sandy

Samuel Going B:Abt 1777 - Amherst / Nelson Co. VA

I am looking for information on Samuel Gowen/Going/Goin. Most important is his parents's information. He married twice and there is some confustion as to which wife had which children. Wife's maiden names are unknown. Childrens names are as follows:

Charles E. B: Aug 1826
Paulus R. B: Nov. 1828 Amherst Co.
Oliver B: Abt. 1831
Edwin B: Abt. 1832
Philip W. B: Abt. 1829
Nathaniel B: Abt. 1835
Sophia B: Abt. 1825

These are the children I have verified by Census. There are most likely a number of additional children. I am related thru Nathaniel who settled in Nelson Co. VA married Phoebe Tyree (who is probably also from Amherst Co orgininally, her parents were Jesse E. TYREE and May W. VIA). All Nathaniel & Phoebe's children were born in Nelson Co. VA they are as follows:

Albert W. B: Abt. 1867
Robert W. B: Abt. 1860
Mary L. B: Abt. 1866
Laura E. B:Abt. 1868
Milie A. B: Abt. 1870

I only have info on Albert I still need Albert's wife's madien name - I would like any and all decendancy information on anyone mentioned in this post. Either reply to this post or email me at Lockjaw242@aol.com

John Byrd Going established The Calhoun Monitor in Pittsboro MS in 1900, along with his partner, Thomas Martin Murphree. The newspaper was later combined with The Dixie Herald and moved to Calhoun City, where it became the The Monitor-Herald. John also served as Postmaster in Calhoun City, circa 1920-30. John and Ronda appear in the 1910-1930 censuses in Calhoun Co. MS. Their children were Marrin Finley C. Going, b- 1907 in Calhoun Co., who married a cousin of mine, Ola Rae McClung, whose mother was my great aunt, Edney Bennett. Finley served in WW II and was an Accountant and Photographer. Their 2nd son was Edward Duran Going, b- 1909 in Calhoun Co. Their daughter was Roena Jane Going, b- 1910 in Calhoun Co. Their 3rd son was John Byrd Going, Jr., b- 1920 in Calhoun Co., who also served in WW II and stated on his enlistment that he was a Movie Actor/ Entertainer. Finley and John Jr. can be found in the WW II records at Ancestry.com.

I am John B. Going's great grand son. Send me and e:mail and I can tell you about him. I knew him before he died. After his death, my grandmother and I cleaned out his house. I had some of his books until they were destroyed in a house fire. My dad can give you all the history of his family.

Calhoun County, MS: John B. Going, wife Rhonda Steele

Am looking for more information on John Bird Going and family.
Not my direct line, but his wife, Rhonda Steele would have been a cousin to my direct ancestor.
From census, I know they lived in Calhoun County, MS and had 4 children - 3 possibly living to adulthood.
Rhonda Steele Going (1876-1950) was buried in Ballenger Cemetery (Rocky Branch Baptist Church) with other Steeles in her line. (Dau of Isaac C. Steele and Nancy Provine.)

According to census, he was an editor and then publisher of a newspaper. (Name not given.)
SSDI shows he died in Oct of 1968.
Family information shows he is buried in Calhoun City Cemetery.
Children were Edward D.,another son, and two daughters. The names are difficult to read in the census data.
In the SSDI, there was an Edward Going who died in 1983 in Calhoun.
Thanks for any more information or obits on these individuals.

I, too, am at a dead-end with my 3rd Great Grandmother, Sarah (Sallie) Eunice Going b. 1805 SC and died late 1800's Lawrence Co. AR. I've seen the many Goins on the Guion-Miller Rolls of Cherokee Applications. There was even a Sallie Goings - tribe- Choctaw (card #481). There were Goins Native Amerricans in TN, AL, NC, GA, and the Indian Territories. I will check all my Goin, Goines, Goen, Gowen, Goings, Goingsnake, Going-to-Sleep, Goingwolf, etc. data that I've collected over the years, for your people, and will let you know if I find anything familiar. Also would appreciate any information re a Sarah or Sallie. Happy Hunting.

The message about William Alexander Gowens/Goings/Goins hits a familiar note. My great grandfather was John William Goings, and he had a son named James Alexander Goings. My g grandfather was born in Copiah County Mississippi about 1837. When he came to Texas he left 6 or 8 brothers; some of the following names were Tom, George, and James. My own Grandfather was George Perry Goings, born in 1880. I have had problems tracing any farther back than my g grandfather. I do have his parents' names listed somewhere, but have been unable to find anything about them. I, too, wondered if it might have been because of interracial marriage that they just left with no more contact with their kin.

Does this story ring a bell with anyone? My Gooing research ends with birth of Pleasant Gooing abt 1797, maybe in AL or TN. Thanks

Hello Judy, Always great to meet a new cousin
Drury was born in Greenville, Brunswick Co.,Va. between 1735-1749. I have long worked on the theory he was possibly a junior. There was a Thomas Going born in Brunswick Co., Va. in 1755.
I feel like Drury and Sarah was married ca. 1767, possibly in South Carolina.
Sarah was born in 1751, in Orange Co. (later
Caswell Co.) North Casrolina, dau. of Thomas
Baxter, of Va. She died 22 April,1820, SC
They resided in Chester Co., SC. I'm
also a descendant of Isaac and Rebecca Palmer
Going. Your Thomas Baxter Going was their
eldest child and my gg grandfather was
William George Washington "Billy" Going, their eighth child.
Maybe we can find Drury's parents together. Lookin' forward to hearing from you

Your cousin in Loganville, Georgia

Hi. I just read your message about the Gowens. I believe your gg.grandfather (James D.S. Gowens) and my gggg.grandfather (Solomon Gowens) were brothers. I'll tell you how...
My grandmother maiden name was Gowens. Her father was Ebbie Lee Gowens. His father was John Gowens (married to Mary English). His father was Solomon Gowens. And that leads to William Alexander Gowens, Solomon and James' father.
I am curious about their background (race). Somewhere I had read that James D.S. Gowens was Melungeon (?) and my grandmother seen on the 1860 census that Solomon, wife Mary and son John were classified as Malatto.
I have been doing research for almost 2 years now (off and on) and can only come across bits of info. If you have any info. that you would be willing to share with me I would be more than greatful.

Thanks
Christie

Her husband is listed as John Thomas Hughes born Aug 6 1876 in Alexanderville, Echols Georgia. Arrie and John were married Oct 22 1896 in Alexanderville, Echols Georgia. There are two children listed, a Clyude Virginia Hughes and John Lambert Hughes.
If anyone had any information please contact me. Thanks
