I'm trying to locate a dear friend named C. J. (Sunnie) Goldsmith. We were stationed together in the U.S. Army from 1987-89 in Augsburg, Germany. We were both Equal Opportunity Advisors at that time, but Sunnie had previously been a DJ for Armed Forces Radio, and at one time was an Army Drill Instructor. Please help me find my friend. mel.calvert@cox.net

Hi Brenda,

Thanks for posting this.

I have had a look at the rootschat discussion and there seem to be several references in the national archives to particular baptists in the area. All very interesting as I cannot say I had ever heard of them. Now, I need to find if my 4xg grandfather, Edward Goldsmith b.Hellingly 1786 was linked to these Goldsmiths. I cannot see him mentioned in the rootschat discussion thread.

Best,

Erica

It said his origin was New Ross which is in County Wexford. The only discrepency is the estimated date of birth which they have as 1850 being 27 when he travelled on the ship.

I have a Thomas Goldsmith, married to Keziah Townsend in Ripe,Sussex in 1811. They had children Elizabeth, George, Joseph, Keziah (m.Richard Stone), Keturah, Rebecca,William and Moses (m.Sarah Stone, my ggparents)mostly born in Hellingly. The family were Particular Baptists. Keziah and Richard and Moses and Sarah went to Kent and Sarah and her family lived in Sittingbourne/Milton.
The Stone family seem to have been a Travelling family and there are posts on Rootschat Travellers board about the Goldsmiths of Hellingly/Stones of Hythe.
Brenda

It is thought that the Goldsmiths I am a descendant of were originally from Cheshire, particularly the Nantwich area. There may have lived in London for a time prior to coming to the United States in the early to mid 1600s. In the United States, these Goldsmiths were generally farmers.

Doug Peterson

My 3 ggmother, Sophia Goldsmith b. 1818 married John Dungan abt 1841. While there is much information about the Dungan family, I can find almost nothing on the Goldsmith clan.

Sophia died 2 Jun 1889. Her father was William Goldsmith.

I have found that a Goldsmith family in Philadelphia in the early 1800's were "Planemakers". There were three brothers: William, Thomas and George.

Hello Alfred
I wish I could tell you how Goldsmith Wright is doing, but after the 1930 census, I can find no trace of him. I would like to find him, if he still is living, to ask him what he knows about his 1/2 brothers, Maddox and Edgar Wright and their sister Myrtle. Edgar's son, David Wright, is one of my best friends and he knows very little about the family. Goldsmith would be his 1/2 uncle. David's mother, Edgar's second wife, told him, before she died, that Edgar had been married before and had a daughter. The daughter may have been named Eva Wright, but David is not real sure of that as his mother didn't give him many details. Maybe Golldsmith might know something about that. David would like to know more about the family. Please do send me the picture of Muzella. She would be David's step grandmother and I will print the picture and give it to him. Any thing you might know about the family would be of help.
You can contact me directly at jkinsey17@comcast.net
Thank you very much for your reply and your help.
Ben Kinsey

Doug, et al,

That is a good question and your answer summed it up pretty well. The Shawnees were great silversmiths - wht did they call their Smiths.

It is my understanding that at some point (1100-1600??) some Goldsmiths in England were bankers and had very little if anything to do with smithing by that time - although they undoubtedly did originally.

My people came from an area south of London in Kent called Seven Oaks or something like that and were landed (gentry?) and the land was stolen by the monarchy (I am not sure when). This was not uncommon for when the monarchy borrowed money from the bankers (Jews) for crusades, etc. and could not pay it back they gave land in lieu - then confiscated it during any of the four Jewish "Expulsions" - the last being in 1688, if memory serves.

Which, is when my line of Goldsmiths came to America. Coincidence? All I know is my grandfather was complaining about it in the 50s and 60s and said that as late as 1890 or so, our family tried to raise money to hire a lawyer to file suit against the crown for said confiscation.

That is all I can contribute at his time. Feel free to share this with anyone you wish.

Eli Goldsmith

PS: Are you related to any Goldsmiths?

I wonder if I might join in? My great great grandfather, Thomas Goldsmith, was born in Ryarsh, Kent, in 1806. He moved away from the area and settled in Dartford. Parish records indicate that his parents were Edward and Anne Turner, who married at Wateringbury in 1801, but I have not yet found any more information that definitely applies to them. I should also mention that I have not found any further information about this family in the Ryarsh parish records apart from the baptisms of Thomas and his siblings.

Would be interested to know if this connects with your families.

Steve

I don't have a "Benjamin" in my Goldsmith family, however my GG Grandfather, Henry Goldsmith, and his siblings were born from 1836 to 1859 in Gorey, County Wexford. Their parents were William GOLDSMITH and Anne WALL. William's parents are shown as George GOLDSMITH and Jane BRYAN (in many ancestry trees) - although I haven't actually found any hard evidence to substantiate this.

Perhaps there is a connection.

Hi,
I am a Goldsmith from england & currently researching my family name. My family and most early goldsmiths seem to come from the Kent and Sussex area. A search in the Baptism Index on this site going back to 1500s shows early Goldsmiths in Kent, but also other variations (gouldsmythe etc.) which seemed to get transformed at some stage.

Whilst its true that there are german and jewish versions that became anglicized most were later, there do appear to be some wealthy Goldsmith's in the early record, but also many poor agricultural labourers like my great, great etc. grandfather.

The very early historical records always list the trade as "Thomas Essex, citizen and goldsmith". You can find references to Goldsmiths of various kinds from 1600s onwards, eg as a Physician in London:
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=17483

There is the famous author Oliver Goldsmith (b1730) who's family was from Ireland.

Have you seen the Goldsmith discussion forum at:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/goldsmith/

This is the oldest Goldsmith record I have found on Ancestry:
Name: Elizabeth Goldsmith
Christening Date: 30 Jun 1593
Christening Place: Rainham, Kent, England
Father's Name: Richard Goldsmith
You might like to check this site as well:
http://www.theweald.org/
But beware it doesn't always work!
It gives the versions of the name in the Weald area as Gouldsmith, Gouldsmyth or Goldsmythe.
So lot's more research to be done ...
Hugh
I have traced my family of Goldsmiths who have lived in and around Hailsham, Hellingly and Herstmonceux since at least c1790. I'm stuck on my gg grandfather Thomas Goldsmith, who married Emma Lusted in Hellingly 24th December 1822. They subsequently lived in Herstmonceux. I believe he died Hellingly 1836 age 48. Any connection do you think??
