Are you still looking for info about this family? Zolley is my gg grandfather's niece. The family is easy to remember since all 8 of the children's names start with a "Z". Amazing! :)

I have just re-started my search for my ggg grandfather Charles Golliher (Zolley's grandfather) and saw your post.
So let me know if you are still looking, what you are specifically looking for, and if you have anything on Charles! :) Thanks!

btw - I have also just renewed contact with another of Joseph's (Z's dad)descendant. :)
John - Sorry to delay--we have so many things to talk about! I am aware of some of the resources you mention--I've been wanting to travel to the area for a looong time now (esp. Ball State). Have a really good research person in the area but I'll need to look her info up. Also need to figure out how best to send you Putman info. :)

I agree that direct email would be great... I tried to email you but the site wants me to become a member so email me at tas1018@comcast.net. I will watch for it! ~ Anne

I'm glad that you still recieve hits also. Time does fly by.
I haven't seen it, but have been told that there is info @ the Randolph County Court House to substantiate his being dying as the result of a lumbering accident. That is something that I'm going to go & try to find if it is there. The only other thing I know about Charles for sure is where he is buried. It's a little cemetry about 1 mile south of Losantville, IN. My wife & I have been there, but the stones are so old that if they aren't broke you cant read. Again I've been told to use a nylon brush to remove surface dirt and then sprinkle flour on the store to enhance the writing.
Unfortunately nothing on your GG Grandfather. I have found other items, I think. He is John David, right? Still trying to get organized as I have a lot to go through way other people have given me alot of "info", all unorganized.
I also have seen that Ball State University in Muncie, IN has 4 boxes of papers on Charles Golliher, I think it is the 3rd Charles, from Randolph. Our youngest daughter attends Ball State currently, so I also can use their library, and again something I want to check out.
Would love any info on Harriet that you can share.
You can e-mail me direct, that way I can try to let you know as/if I find more info.
John

Greetings John - My posts are indeed old (can't believe it's been 5 years cine my first one) but my email address has not changed so I still thankfully receive alerts when someone replies to one of them! :)

Very interesting that you believe Charles' passing followed the felling of a tree. It makes one think there might be medical records re: an accident somewhere out there! Am curious -- do you have have any locations other than Ross County OH?? That could be a big help in tracking him.

I am also intrigued with your family bible. Does it mention my gg grandfather, Werter's brother, John?

I have a lot of Harriet Putman (back to Phillip Boudemont b. 1685 Muhlofen GER) so let me know if you are interested in that.

Look forward to hearing from you. ~ Anne

I am another who can not get past Charles in Ross County. I go John Jr(me), John Paul(F), Roy(Roey GF), Richard (GGF), Wirter (GGGF), & Charles (GGGGF). I just got started also. I have the above info from my Grandfather's (Roy)Bible that my Grandmother had. That is all the info in the bible, however I have found alot of the Graves as I am still in Randolph County. Before my Aunt died, she was helping me and had told me that several others had contacted her to try & get past Charles in Ross County, Ohio as no one has been able to get any family info on Charles. I do know that Charles died several months after an accident involving felling a tree. Harriet then married a Nathan Pool. Anyway, hope to hear back as these "GOLLIHER Posting" all appear to be old. Hard name to research.
John Golliher

I am brand new to genealogy. However this post caught my attention. From my grandmothers bible, I have this lineage. John Jr(me), John Paul(F), Roy(Roey GF), Richard (GGF), Wirter W(GGGF), & Charles. I have found where Charles married a Harriet Putnam (Putman) in Ross County, OH in 1832. It shows two entries & one is spelled Charles GOLIHOR. I just thought this was a mis-spelling as often occurred back then. When I read this it just seemed funny that your spelling is gUlihUr. My Aunt whom was helping me before she passed had told me of other "relatives" who were researching and all had "dead ended" with Charles in Ohio. As I stated earlier, I am just beginning and trying to get organized with what I do have but just couldn't pass up trying to respond to this "coincidence" to try and post this. Anything I might have, unknowingly, is gladly shared to all.
John Golliher

Hey everyone,

I've been able to find records for Stephen Golliher (b. 1799) who married Elizabeth Etherton and lived in Illinois. However, I have been unable to find any information about his parents. My father told me that Stephen's father's name was Peter, but I can find no record of this. If anyone else has information about Stephen's ancestry I would be very grateful to hear it.

Thanks.

Hey, thanks for the info! The pronunciation, while not unknown in other locations, definitely seems to emanate from the general area of Illinois. As I think I wrote much earlier, I believe that is because Irish emigrants who arrived there with the pet form of the surname O'Gallchobhair (O'Gallagher) spelled O'Gallchu (and pronounced roughly GAWL-hew). Irish-Americans tacked an "r" onto the pronunciation (like they did with the word 'idea' to render 'idear'), and the pronunciation GAWL-yer or GAWL-ee-yer was born.

Part of this, of course, is conjecture, but I base it on known facts, such as the pet form of the name known in certain parts of Donegal, and that Irish emigrants with the surname GOLLAHER (yes, one or two even spelled it that way!) are to be found in census records of the time.

Thank again for the post!
Michael

She had not found the parents either.
Thank you for your reply and good luck with your genealogy.
Gracie

Michael, I've just started researching the Golliher line in my family and I've seen some prior posts by you, so I thought I'd put in my two-cents worth.

I'm descended from James Washington Golliher, b~1837, who spent nearly his whole life in Warsaw, Illinois. Some other people researching JW believe his father is Charles Golliher b~1810 in KY, but I haven't found proof of that yet.

Here in St. Louis, we've always pronounced it goll-a-her, but I understand that in Warsaw, it's still pronounced goll-yer. Not sure why it changed.

I have a question for you also regarding DNA analysis. My uncle is currently pending some tests from FTDNA (but we have 47 markers back-email me if you want his ysearch ID#). There is a descendent of WIlliam Culbertson Golliher listed on SMGF.org that we are not a match for. We also don't match any of the other current Gollihers or Gallaghers. We're actually closest to the McMahon-McGuires.

My question is this: Are you aware of any other places to compare DNA results for Gollihers? Or have you gotten involved at all in any of this DNA stuff? I just think it might be useful in figuring out the different "lines" of Gollihers.

Michael, or anyone reading this post, please feel free to email me, especially if your interested in using DNA as a genealogy tool. I'd love to be able to compare results!

Michael,
My family name is spelled Gulihur and we pronounce it 'GUL-yer'. My GGGGrandfather was Isaac Gulihur, Abraham's Lincoln's next door neighbor and friend in New Salem Illinois and comrade in arms in the Black Hawk War. Isaac Gulihur came to Knox County Illinois from Kentucky at about the same time Lincoln did. Isaac's father was George Gulihur and we have run out of leads with George Gulihur in Kentucky. There was a clan of Gollahers in Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois as you well know and I've been trying to make a connection between George Gulihur and one of the Gollahers under the belief that a misspelling of Gollaher into Gulihur may have occurred and not been corrected. I have found no spelling of Gulihur anywere in records prior to the mention of George Gulihur. However, I did find in the U.S. Census Report of 1850, I believe it was, of a Thomas Gulihur (my name) and wife Catherine Gulihur, both born in Ireland, as farmers in Ohio with their two like-named children also born in Ireland. That's a coincidence or else Gulihur was a name found in Ireland and my ancestors may not be related to the Gollahers of Georgia and South Carolina. Anyway, as far back as my family remembers, we have been calling ourselves 'GUL-yer' causing much confusion as people try to figure out how we get that pronunciation out of 'Gulihur'.

I am assuming that they died before 1900 as Mable is listed as a Niece on the census from Missouri. Any help would be great..

Sandy

Thanks for the insight I have been thinking the same things, although I have traced my fathers family to this country as early as 1620's and the rest really early too it is hard to say where some of them did come from. Can you help me out with the Dawes roles? are they found online? Do you know the web address? I would appreciate any help in this direction!
Thanks!

Golliher- Possilby TN,AL and MS

I am desperately trying to break through my Golliher brick wall. I have only been able to get back to 1880 where M.J. Golliher was found in Kemper Co. MS as a 36 year old widow with 2 children- William Arthur age 8 and Pulaski Lace age 6. M.J. was a Blair before her marriage and her family had lived in AL before settling in MS. The Golliher family was not in MS in 1870. Both children were I believe born in MS.
I am looking for a Golliher male born late 1830's to possibly 1842. I am thinking his name may be William or Arthur. The second son has the same name as an unlce of the mother Pulaski Blair (initials were P.L.- possibly also Pulaski Lace Blair)Census shows that the father of the children was born in ,what looks like LA. I can't find anything in LA and am wondering if that whould be AL. M.J. married a Nester in Kemper Co. as the two boys were found in the home of a J.N. (M) Nester in the 1890 list of Educable Children of that county. A descendant of the Nester gentleman verified that he married a Mary J.
I have a feeling that this unknown Golliher possibly came into MS from TN. CAN"T PROVE IT-JUST A HUNCH. I did find some Golliher families in Marshall Co., MS (some spelled with a rather than o etc) in 1850-1870, I wish I could make contact with descendants of any of these MS Gollihers t see if we can make any connections.
Anyone who hs anything we might consider together please contact me.

What interesting stuff! I have learned a bit. I am interested in the general history of the surname, and there is no doubt that GULIHUR and its variants are part of the GOLLAHER /GOLLIHER /et al family. Someday we'll make the connections!

I would be pleased to offer you server space or assist you in building your website however I can. I have purchased the domain names of several GOLLAHER variants as a precaution, and I would encourage you to buy the GULIHUR.com and .org ... I can offer you server space and all the ammenities such as e-mail, etc. if you wish. I have made that offer to just about anyone serious in putting up a related family history / genealogical site. We could even do a "surname center" type template for the GULIHUR spelling. Whatever you like.

Someday I'll finish all the websites I started :D !

I am posting some of your surname comments to the GOLLAHER-L list and our GOLLAHER family list at Yahoo,.

II look forward to recieving whatever you have ... no hurry.

Michael Monroe Gollaher

Well spoken, Martha! The Irish culture is indeed the most open and accessible culture on the planet. And, yes, Golliher and its variants are VERY Irish. Old Irish (true Gaelic).

I'm not sure about the "dark Irish" being connected to the Roman influence ... the Romans never got much of a foothold at all in Ireland, and certainly not in the north-western part of the Island where the O'Gallchobair were. I think the dark hair is due to early Spanish influences (no, I'm not talking about the Armada. That rumor is totally without foundation) as well as the fact that many early Celtic tribes were from the Italian region of the continent. There is not a single physical characteristic one can associate with the culture because "Irish" is not a race, but a culture.

Like your family, there have been rumors of a Cherokee influence at some point, and the rumors seem so persistent and cross so many family lines that I have thought there must be something to them. Your account, however, makes good sense. Even when the American Indian culture was heavily persecuted, there has always been a healthy respect for many tribes (however begrudgeful); that's why so many sports teams where named after Indian tribes, and why the U.S. Army to this day names all its' attack helicopters after formidle Indian tribes the Army once fought, i.e. Apache, Commanche, etc. No doubt most of us wouldn't mind a little American Indian blood to beef up our genetic material!

All my best!

Kelly, thanks for the info!! Sorry it took so long to see your post (I have too many e-mail accounts).

Your information is very valuable, indeed, in helping me understand the relationships and more accurately placing the 'GAWL-yer" pronunciation.

Our family has a history of spelling the surname GOLLIHER during that time frame (also GOLLEHER, GALLIHER and a few variants), and I know there are some close connections between these two surname spellings, but it is difficult to tease them out. Anybody born in Kentucky around 1810 must be related. My ancestor, William Culbertson Gollaher, had a grandfather named Charles, an uncommon name in the line, so if you have an ancestor named Charles, I'll bet there is a connection somehow.

I am very interested in participating in the DNA analysis studies, something I've been thinking about for a while now, so I would very much appreciate getting more information from you! I am not aware of any other DNA studies being conducted for Golliher /Gollahers, etc, but I haven't looked in over a year.

I'll copy you this post to your e-mail addy as well.

- Michael

Just received the death cert. for one of her sons and it is spelled Gallagher. She is consistant on her census records, (after she married Alex Sellers, 26 Sept. 1872, Crawford Co. Missouri.)that she was born in Missouri. I have not been able to find her before the 1880 census. Does anyone have any suggestions or information?
Gracie

Well, it has been almost a year so I thought I would try again. This is the quietest message board I have ever seen. Anyway, I have found my grandmother in two census records. 1860 and 1870. But she is not living with her parents . There is a court record that her sister Nancy is suppose to be in the care of the family Mary E. is living with. I did find a possible but no way to prove she is the correct Nancy. But she is not living with Mary E. I have Mary E.'s death certificate and obit but there are no parents on either.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(1860 U.S. Census)
MISSOURI , SCOTLAND, GREEN TWP
Series: M653 Roll: 646 Page: 969
SPEIGHT, SARAH Age: 44, Female, Race: WHITE, Born: OH
William Speight age 19 M b.
Margret,
I was so surprised and happy to see your posting for the Golliher family in Indiana. Naomi Bussear was my grandfather's (Zachary Leander Bussear) first cousin. Although we lived in northern Michigan, I remember my grandfather and my father speaking of visiting his cousin on their farm in Randolph County. The uniqueness of the name Zol Golliher, caught my attention. I have a picture of my grandfather, Naomi, and Zol Golliher taken on their farm during my grandfather's visit to Indiana. if you e-mail me directly, I would be happy to send you the picture.
I have traveled to Indiana doing my genealogical research and I am certain that Nettle Creek Township is in Randolph County and not Delaware County.
There are still Bussear's farming in Lynn, Randolph County, Indiana.
The Bussear's (Martin Bussear married Sarah Callahan) originally lived in northern Virginia. He had fought in the war of 1812 and received Indian bounty land at (Paddy's Run)Shandon, Butler County, Ohio. Martin died of cholera there in 1834. Sarah then moved her family North to Washington Township,Preble County, Ohio.around 1850, the family moved West in to Randolph County, Indiana where they farmed about 1/4 mile north and 2 miles west of Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana.
I would love to share my family genealogy with anyone interested in Randolph County and Delaware County starting about the1850's.
Isla_Aguada@MSN.com
She died on November 27, 1939 in Newton, Ks. She was married to William Dewey Hand Senior. Family history tells us that she was a Cherokee indian. We even have a watch fob holder made of dear skin and beaded. Although, I tend to believe that she was "dark Irish" as has been talked about in this thread. I have pictures of her too, but no more information on her family. I do remember mention of a name Cordelia.

Hi Dot,

I found 2 possible matches in LA. John Golliher born 1843 or David Golliher born in 1847. I also found a possible match in MS. George Golliher born in 1840. The interresting thing about George Golliher is that he resided in Johnson county, MO. This is only 2 counties away from Kemper county MS.

Another interresting fact is the name and subsequent names of Lace's first born George. Unfortunatley, the record, at least the one I get from Ancestry.com is missing the record of mother and father.

Well, the rolls are found at www.archives.gov in the research room, under geneaology and Native American Records....BUT! I could not seem to access it. I will keep trying and see if it works.

But it is the National Archives website. Also, I am not sure where you live at, but you can also access it in person at a regional office of the National Archives. There is one in Kansas City, but I am not sure where the other regional offices are at.

Good luck!

Re: Golliher - Indian?

I have a Peckinpaw in my family as well...not an Indian name, though we were always told it was.....ha!

Peckinpaw is actually Pickenpaugh derived from Beckinbach...which is Bavarian German...explaining the dark complexion, dark eyes and hair. Bavarian German had a lot of Italian that come up from the south.

The Gollihers are Irish...dark Irish...also dark hair, dark eyes and complexions. That came from the Romans that invaded Ireland back in the day. The Irish with the red hair and blue eyes tended to more related to the Vikings who also invaded the island.

I have done a lot of digging to find my "Indian" roots...most of which, it turns out, was rumor. If someone was Indian, they usually were not accepted into White culture so easily back in the day unless they were Cherokee...and even they were not wanted. Some took on white names and lived as whites, but they would not have talked about their Indian heritage after that. It was not such a good thing to be Indian back then....and actually more of a curse.

Hope that helps! (And by the way...the Irish were just as persecuted, if not more, than the Indians...so be proud you are a Golliher!)
