DoD Identifies Army Casualties

The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of seven soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They died Oct. 27 in Arghandab Valley, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device. They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.

Staff Sgt. Luis M. Gonzalez, 27, of South Ozone Park, N.Y.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Antonio Ray Gonzalez, son of Tony and Christine Bails Gonzalez of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Muscatine, was stillborn Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids.

Services are at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial will be at Linwood Cemetery.

Cards and flowers may be directed to Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.

Survivors include his parents; a sister, Elena of Cedar Rapids; maternal grandparents, John and Karen Bails of Cedar Rapids; paternal grandmother, Margie Gonzalez of Muscatine; paternal great-grandmother, Elena Martinez of Muscatine; and maternal great-grandmother, Alberta Dusenberry of Muscatine.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Margarita Martinez Gonzalez, 51, Muscatine, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Mrs. Gonzalez was born May 5, 1952, in Carrizo Springs, Texas, the daughter of Pete and Elena Dias Martinez. She married Ignacio Gonzalez in 1971.

Survivors include her mother, Elena of Muscatine; four sons, Ignacio 'Chito' Gonzalez, Joey Gonzalez and Jesse Gonzalez, all of Muscatine, and Tony Gonzalez of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Tiffany Gonzalez of Muscatine; three brothers, Pete Martinez Jr. of Des Moines and Frank Cardona and Ismiel Martinez, both of Muscatine; four sisters, Mary Garcia and Paula Hernandez, both of Oregon, Angela Cardona of Muscatine and Alice Pineta of Milwaukee, Wis.; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father; her husband; a sister, Flora Gutierrez; and a grandson, Antino Ray Gonzalez.

Mr. Gonzalez was born on May 12, 1916, in Ojo De Agua RCH, Texas, the son of Domingo and Victoria Rosas Gonzalez. He married Carmen DeLeon on March 3, 1940, in Ojo De Agua RCH, Texas.

He was a member of the St. Mathias Church.

He farmed in Eliza Creek and worked for Jack Noble and Dwight Irwin.

Mr. Gonzalez is survived by one son, Robert Gonzalez and wife, Kathy, of Codorus, Pennsylvania; five daughters, Maria Herlein and husband, Kevin, of Davenport, Lydia Brinson and Victoria Miranda, both of Muscatine, Paula Garcia of Moline, Illinois, and San Juanita Zaehringer and husband, Don, of Muscatine; 20 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Benito Gonzalez of Pleasanton, Texas and Fidel Gonzalez of McCallan, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1994, one son, Fidel Gonzalez, two daughters in infancy, two brothers, Gregory and Juan Gonzalez, and two sisters.

EAST MOLINE, Ill. -- Vernie J. Gonzalez, 58, East Moline, died Monday, April 11, 2005, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island, Ill.

Burial, with military honors, will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to the family.

Mr. Gonzalez was born April 4, 1947, in Omaha, Neb., the son of Ruben Gonzalez and Delores Alvarez Gonzalez.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, during which he served in Germany for a time and received decoration as a Marksman and as well as the National Defense Service Medal.

He was employed for a time at International Harvester, Farmall Works and later with John Deere in the foundry.

His interests included collecting Army memorabilia and Indian artifacts. He enjoyed going to flea markets.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Melba Weigand; a daughter, Trisha Knight-Larson and husband, Gregory, of Muscatine; grandchildren, Nathanial and Trey Larson; stepgrandchildren, Jessica and Christopher Weigand; parents, Ruben and Delores Gonzalez of Milan; three brothers, Robert Gonzalez of Milan, Richard Gonzalez of Peoria, Ill., and Roy Gonzalez and wife, Sandy, of Rock Island; a sister, Denise Vallejo and husband, Daniel, of Rock Island; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and a number of aunts and uncles.

Searching for family of Jesus David (or Davis) Gonzalez born 1922 in Moctezuma, San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Parents: Juan Gonzalez and Carlota Davis. Jesus married Eredelia Annie Bell Delgado in Mexico. They had at least one child in Mexico, son Neftalí born 1945. Emigrated to Pharr, TX in 1950. By the early 1960s, they were living in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Jesus died in Chicago in 1990. I am still searching and all I know is that Toribio Gonzalez del Busto, was the son of Santiago and Maria Pascuala Vesga from the Principate of Asturias. Toribio came to America around 1620

Good day! "Gonzalez-del-Busto" es a composed last name of a patronimic and a toponimic. There are two towns in Asturias named Busto. Apparently they came to Nueva Granada, Nueva España and Cuba in the 17th Century.
According to Archivo de Indias, Toribio is in the list of passangers to the Indias, from the Principado de Asturias (possibly from Gijon or Xixon) to Nueva Granada in 1620.
He arrived in Velez,(founded in 1539) married Catarina Diaz Sarmiento, daughter of Captain Juan Diaz Bermudez from San Lucar de Barrameda, Andalucia, Spain. They were the trunk of a large family that settled in San Juan de Giron, (founded in 1631) now Santander, Colombia.

my name is gina gonzalez rolle my grandfather left santander spain for cuba and ended in the bahamas over 100 years ago and I know that his name was actually Bernardino Alvo Gonzalez and he was born in santander Spain on October 26th 1883, He left for Cuba between 1920-1924, I heard he had ten living children when he left and the eldest name was Jose. You are welcome. If you are referring to here on the US not understanding the signifance of the two last names? You are right. Many times they either drop one surname or the make it as if it was a middle name.

The way the Spanish surnames work is as follows: the first surname is the father's surname and the second surname is the mother's. For example: john Harris y Johnson. The father would be john Harris and the mother would be Mary Johnson. The wife would be Mary Johnson De Harris. Meaning of Harris. Makes sense?

I was surprise when clicking on the "gonzalez" link to see my mother's obituary had been posted by someone not belonging to my family. I thank you for the posting. My mother was so much more than her obit. would imply, but it was her wish that not one dime be given to the newspaper for something she felt should be free! Therefore we adhered to her restriction. Question about Spanish naming conventions

Hello everyone,

Can someone tell me how to read Spanish surnames? For example, when a woman is named [first name] [last name] "Y" [last name], what do the 2 last names and the "Y" mean? I know enough Spanish to know that "y" means "and". I'm confused about the 2 last names. Thank you so much for your response. I think I've got it now. The children of Mary Johnson and John Harris would be named Martha Harris y Johnson. Only the wife's name would contain a "de" instead of "y" with her maiden name coming first, before her husband's name. That helps a lot.

Also, has it been your experience in doing Spanish genealogy searches that people who transcribed records dropped one of the last names because they didn't understand the significance, i.e., leaving Martha Harris y Johnson to be Martha Harris or Martha Johnson? I'm just looking for some general tips before I dig into my Spanish family history. Muchimas gracias!

Yes, I was referring to anyone transcribing the records, who was not familiar with the Spanish naming convention, removing a name without realizing what they're doing. I was afraid that would happen. That must make searches much more difficult. Do you have any suggestions or tips for working around this?

When both names are present, at least you have the mother's maiden name, which is VERY helpful!

My grandfather, Antonio Gonzalez (also known as Antonio deJesus Maldonado), was from Ciales. He and his wife, Marcelina Hernandez Escarfuyer lived in Fronton/Yunez in Ciales I believe back in early 1900 to early 1950's. He died in 1951 and she died in 1953 in Santurce.
