Starting this Fall, major conservation efforts will be started on the Gooch graveyard located in Granville County, NC not far from Oxford.
This yard is on the site of Daniel Gooch's (1756-1837) homefarm. Daniel, his wife Nancey Sneed along with many of their children and grandchildren are buried here. There are 17 stones still standing and there may be more buried. Many of the children of Daniel Terry Gooch are buried here, including many Civil War soldier who died without issue in the War. The yard dates from at least 1822, probably a bit earlier and has not recieved any care since the 1950s. Extensive work will need to be conducted to clearn and reset them to protect them from further damage. The work is being carried out by a professional archaeologist. Additionally, future work will need to be done to restore the iron fence.
