Michael Goodyear / The Goodyear Family

Another contact tells me that someone called Michael Goodyear has lots of information about the Goodyears I'm connected to; I'd be really pleased if he would get in touch.

I'm looking for information about the children of Robert Goodyear(sometimes listed as Goodyer) born 1846 in Malvern, Worcestershire England. He was a bootmaker who moved to London and married Ann Angel(l)in 1871, living in the Wandsworth/Battersea. The children were Thomas Alfred born 1871, George Frederick 1876, William George 1878 (my great uncle) and twins (H)anna(h) Maria and Elizabeth Ann born 1880. Robert died in 1882 and Ann married John Banks and had another son, James Banks, who was my grandfather.

Many thanks

Jean

Re: Frederick Goodyear

I suspect that you are mixing two Goodyear families together. The ancestors of Charles Goodyear came to what is now the US in the 1st great migration during the 1630's with the founder being a Stephen Goodyear who was the Liet Gov of the New Haven Colony. There is a wonderful book entitled the Genealogy of the Goodyear family written by Grace Goodyear Kirman and published in 1899 that gives an extensive history on Charles Goodyear. Now to add another twist to this my maiden name is Charles, and the connection between my branch of the Goodyear family and the Charles family occured in about 1907 in the Tompkins, Chemung part of New York State. My father's name was Orman Goodyear Charles. Several of the descendants of Stephen Goodyear moved to Genoa in Cayuga County New York in about 1801 and the Charles family which had been originally in New Haven (John Charles was a contemporary of Stephen Goodyear in New Haven) but his descendants had moved to Massachusetts sometime between 1700 and 1711, and then to Cayutaville, Tompkins, New York about 1832. Now if you have definite proof that your father's family immigrated from England int he 1800's I would say that your Goodyear's and the Goodyear family in this county which includes Charles goodyear the inventor might be linked clear back into the 1600's through Stephen Goodyear (also a branch of this family in the name of a brother of Stephen probably went to Newfoundland). The connection to the Charles family might be through the John Charles family of New Haven.

Their older brother Robert was born in 1839 in Bath. The next child born after Elizabeth and Henry, Alfred Theodore was born in Bristol in 1846. SO i should doubt there were any other children born in box unless they died very young??

Jenny

If it is the German Goodyear family it may be that some of those are posted.
Hi Jenny

I have had another look for Goodyer/Goodger in 17 parishes round North and West of Chippenham and Robert's is the only birth I can find. Going by the census 1841 and 1851 I can't find another Robert Senior anywhere in Wiltshire Somerset or Gloucester. So he may have died but where.

Have you managed to get Roberts jnr marriage yet. On the census he had Butcher so it would be interesting to find where he learnt his trade, also if he had father deceased. Not that they all put that on anyway.

The 17 parish christenings up to 1837 I have looked at are
Biddestone, Box, Castle Combe, Corsham, Ditteridge, Grittleton, Hardenhuish, Kington St Michael, Langley Burrell, Leigh Delamere, Littleton Drew, Nettleton, North Wraxall, Slaughterford, West Kingston and Yatton Keynell. I have all the Christenings for these parishes not that should help a little.

Irene

Found a christening in Box for Elizabeth 1841 and Henry 1844. Parent Robert & Eliza. I will look around for you and see if I can find Robert's Christening and or marriage. Lets hope he marriage after mid 1837 then you should be his fathers name.

I should add these are the only two Goodyer christenings I have found but I only started from 1834 and only up to 1871. Will try and look at the earlier fiche church records later for you.

Irene

Hi Jenny

Not sure if you have this, Charlotte Allison married William Boulter in Yatton Keynell 6.1.1819. She could have been married before? In the 1841 census there is a Emanuel Grant born about 1825 Castle Cary in Somerset. He is after Charlotte Boulter who is with the family in Box. It may not have anything to do with the Goodyer and Boulter's but you never know. Do you have the 1841 census for Box.

Irene

Frederick Charles Cass, M.A. wrote a book in the mid to late 1800s, "The Parish of Monken Hadley."

In it he describes the origins of the Goodyear fanily.
It was spelled variously Goodere, Goodyere, Goodier, etc.

Within the book is a "family tree" which shows much of the lineage between Ricardus Goodere dePointon in the 13th century and the 1600s.

I come from a German line which was originally Gutjahr, but had an interest in the British Goodyear.

Please contact me at bob@goodyear-mascaro.org for more info.
