I am fervently searching for anyone who may have information on the surname Gorg. It is of German origin and is written with an umlaut over the o. I cannot find any scrap of background on this. Perhaps it was spelled differently in its origins?

Gorges Matthias from Masburg Kreis Cochem Germany

Hallo,
I am searching for Matthias Gorges and his family (wife Anna Gertrud Koster and children Katharina, Elizabeth and Josef). They left Germany in 1867 to Wisconsin. Lizzy Gorges is mentioned in the 1880 census in Brothertown, Fond-du-Lac county. Nothing is known about the rest of the family and nothing else is known about Lizzy. Does anybody connect to this family?
Ursula Buchholz

Gorges - New York

I'm seeking any information about Gorges immigrants who settled in the town of Caton, Stueben County, N.Y. In abt. 1871 Mathias and Barbara Gorges immigrated from Hermeskeil, Germany to Scranton, Pa. where they resided for two years before moving to the above location. They raised five children on a 150 acre farm there : John, b.1858; Anton, b.1855; Marie b.?; Helena, b. 1862; and Nicholas,b.1863. All of the above children were born in Hermeskeil. I'm particularly interested in Anton who stayed at home and worked the farm with his parents and after they died. Anton and Magdalena Bentz, his wife, raised seven children: Barbara Teresa, b.1886 d.?; Amelia Mary, b.1887 d.1968; Anton John,b.1889 d.1963; Maria Katharina, b.1891 d.?; Leo Joseph (my grandfather), b.1893 d.1956, Twins Mathias and Mathilda, b. 1897 d. 1969 and 1927 resp. All but three of these offspring left the area. The three remaining in the area were : Maria Katharina married and lived in Elmira, Leo worked a farm in Lindley, and Mathilda lived in Corning, I believe. Anton John made his career in the Army. Magdalena, mother of the above, was born in Dackenheim, Germany. Following the death of Anton John, her husband, in abt. 1916 she relocated to Williamsport, Pa. where she worked in the rectory of the St. Boniface Church. Her nephew, Rev. Bernard T. Borr was rector at this church.
Any info, no matter how seemingly insignifacant, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Larry D. Gorges

Re: Gorges

I have a pedigree chart from sources unknown that lists an "Ana Margareta Klein" who was married to Simon Gorges. The chart lists one son, Mathias, who is my great-great grandfather. Mathias immigrated to America in approximately 1870, living first in Scranton, Pennsyivania and then in Caton, New York where I now reside. A guess at the age of Ana (spelling just as it appears on the chart) would make it possible that she could have died in the year you specified.
In Germany, the family resided in Hermeskeil, a small town close to Trier and near the northeastern French border.
This may or may not help, but I thought I'd pass it along.

Larry Gorges

I don't think there's a connection. Wilhelmina Gorges came over in the early 1890s, probably through San Francisco; she came over without family. Her mother had died in childbirth years earlier; she had three brothers who remained in Altona (now Hamburg)Germany whose letters I have. The letters never mentioned other family in the U.S.

Michele,

I'm not sure that the originator of this thread is still around; but, I'm interested in knowing if you might be related to me.

My Paternal Grandfather was Mathias Gorges; Son of Gorges and Dupree, who came to the U.S. with Brother John (Johann?) and Sister Mary (Marie or Maria?) about 1880 to 1890, from Alsace - Lorraine. They settled in the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area.

Mathias was born 10/22/1873; John about 1878 and Mary about 1870. John was living with Mathias and his family in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania for the 1910 Census. He apparently hadn't started his large family by that time.

Sound familiar?

Rick

John married Bertha and Mary married Frederick Seiler. I think both marriages were in the Cleveland, Ohion area; but I'm not sure.
Hi -
My mom says a lot of her family came from the town of Hundheim in the area of Hunsruck. This is near the Mosel River - one of the closer large towns would be Bernkastel or Morbach. Hope this helps you.

You're doing fine but could you please include any clue you may have to where in Germany they lived and/or where they settle in USA. My Gorges came from Saarburg/Trier and came to Chicago before the Chicago Fire.
Keep sending out requests you never know what will turn up

Emmigration of Young Single Girl

I just re-read your note and thought I might mention something that could be related to the subject.

I had never looked at Passenger Lists of people emmigrating to the US, until a couple of days ago. When I reviewed the information about the Passengers, I was amazed to find that some whole families were almost wiped out by disease as they were crossing.

Many young children died at sea. And, it wasn't unusual for parents to die; leaving their orphaned children to come to the US, alone.

The conditions on some of thes ships must have been terrible. And, as today, they probably didn't have extremely competent medical personnel.

Rick

Hannah Gorges 1625?

I have an ancestress named Hannah Gorges who married Haenry Smith in 1638 in Stamford, CT. She was supposedly born in 1625- but this would make her a very young bride. Who were her parents? I think her father may have been Henry Gorges, a relative of Ferdinando Gorges, but I can't find a reference. Thanks.

Howdy everyone, I'm looking for an Irene Gorges, whom we thought was a Spaniard. BUT after reading your messages, we might have been looking up the wrong tree. This is all I have on her. She had a daughter named "Anna" that was born about 1855 in Rhea Co., Tennessee. Her husbands last name might have been something like (Corlew, Corlieu, Corleiu, etc) Thanks

GORGES surname

Dear Rick,
Wilhelmina Gorges was born in 1875 in Altona, Schleswig-Hostein, now a part of Hamburg. She came over to the US, to San Francisco as far as I can tell; she also came without other family (which is a puzzle, since I don't know if a teenage girl would come without an adult) in about 1891; I don't know too much about her family as yet
except that her older brothers, parents, etc. were in the Hamburg area.
