The easiest way to get to Hurricane is to go through Heflin on Hwy 78, when you get through Heflin take Hwy 46 toward Ranburne, somewhere [2 to 4 miles] out that way I think before the Bell's Mill bridge, (The first bridge with a different name now, I think, that crosses the Tallapoosa River) there is a big sign on the right hand side of the highway [on the corner with a county road that I don't know what the # is], turn right at the sign. A little ways down that road there will be another sign pointing to a left turn. Again it's an unknown county road. Hurricane Chapel will be down that road.

These where the directions given to me. We had to stop and ask for directions from a man on the side of the road planting pine trees. It is kind of hard to find. But the left turn is a dirt road to the best of my memory. The right turn before that is a paved road. We could not see the signs very well coming from Heflin. It is way back in the woods. Nancy Gortney Denham's grave is about in the middle of the cemetery toward the main road. They are new markers, so if you go, don't look for an old marker. We made that mistake and my daughter found them. The markers and graves have been redone by someone. I don't know who. I am thinking they are related to the Merrill's buried all around them. Their graves look similar.
I think your great great grandmother, Nancy, is the sister of my great great grandfather William. Both were children of Henry Gortney who moved to Alabama from Georgia with his wife and 2 children. What cemetery in Cleburn Co.? Is it the one by the old high school football field?

Keen (Gortney/Graves/perser/Purser/Rankin)

I'm looking for relatives of Keen's in Arkansas. My great-grandfather moved to Texas long ago and we have lost contact with his brothers and sisters descendants. I'm currently trying to track down all of the family geneology. My great grandfather was Harry Walter or some knew him only as Walter. His brothers were Theodore and Charles or Charley as my grandfather referred to him. His sisters were Susie and Minnie. Minnie married a Robert Rankin and Charley married a Eva Gortney. I have no info on who Susie or Theodore married. I have the complete names of the kids parent and the mothers last name was Perser. She had at least one sister that married a Graves. My grandfather had wrote a lot of names etc on a piece of paper with you were cousins, sisters, brothers etc. It is hard to decipher. Two names I haven't been abble to find are Charley Graves and Jimmy Rankin. I'm not sure if these are nicknames or not. I'm also not sure if Charley is the graves that married my great-great-grandmothers sister or if its their kid or grandchild. If you know anything on this, please email me at keenancestry@yahoo.com. P.S. If you are a descendant of Minnie, Susie, Theodore or Charles (Charley) and don't have a picture of them together, then I'll mail you a copy of one I have with all the kids together in a picture with their parents. If you have any pictures you wish to share then I would also be interested in them.
