Hey, Cousin Tammy.Yes, Monroe, my grandpa and Salomie were siblings. Herman & Therman are my Uncles and they live in Moline, Illinois, but Therman passed away in 2005. I'm really glad you enjoyed my pictures. I want to memorialize my family forever. There was a photo taken of Pa's whole family with all his brothers, sisters and his mother and father when they were younger, but I haven't been able to locate it. If you know of anyone who may have a copy, please let me know.
Also, if you'd like to correct any of my information or have anything to add, pictures, stories, etc., just let me know. I want this to be all of our Gosa Family.
Thanks so much,
Jeanette

Hello,
I just saw this post, and I was wondering about the book you have on "The Heritage of Lamar county, Alabama". Where can I get a copy of this book?

My line is the Burtons. My GG grandparents were James Albert Burton born April 28, 1825 died February 14, 1904 and Sarah Matilda Darnell born December 29, 1828 died June 22, 1875.

We are stumped to a point on them. Any info would greatly be appreciated on any of the Burtons. Thank you so much. Marsha

Hello,

I am researching my paternal fathers side of the family, and I would like to know if anyone out there has any information that would be of help. The only info I have now is that my GGM name was Cora Smith, GGF name was Sterling Gosa. They have more children than the 3 I am mentioning, which are Bird C Gosa, Woodrow W Gosa, and Lee A Gosa. I believe that there were 2 daughters as well. Lee A Gosa, who is now deceased is my father's father, and he passed away when my dad was 11 and the situation of their relationship was very rare and so there are things I don't know about my paternal side and I am hoping someone may have something..
I have hit a brick wall looking for my great grandmother.
Her name was Eva Debra Gosey, born in 1858 Daughter of John and Mary Gosey.
That is the information we get from her first marriage to Charles Avery Broadhead, she then divorced Charles and married my great grandfather George H. Pabst Jr.
We were always told that John and Mary Gosey adopted her off of an indian reservation in Merridian Mississippi. I found her on a census with my grandfather (George Jr. Pabst) and it stated that she and her parents were born in Mississippi.
I did find a Debba Gosey at the age of 9 on the census and Debra Goussey age 7 on paper work from the Continental orphanage in Lauderdale Mississippi. Same child just some kind of typo along the way. Any information on this child or my grandmother would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Gosey where are you?

Mary Elizabeth was first married to Frances (Frank) Leroy Miller. Frank was married first to Emeline Dodson. Emeline had a daughter our of wedlock with Rile Robertson and her name was Mollie Robertson. I got both father and mother's name from her death certificate. Mollie was my grandmother. She married John Anderson McDonald May 5, 1892 in Lamar Co. Al. I have copy of her marriage license and on it, they spelled her name Robison. My father was named after Frank.

Al. abt 1875 and together they had one daughter Malissa whom I have never found anything on. Frank died between 1920-1925 and Lisa them married John Russell. If would have anything more on this family I would appreciate any help you can give me. I had a lot but my display went out on my laptop before I could save it..

All I have on Freddie Austin Gosa is a note that his biological father is John Baker or Barker and that he was an illegitimate child. I also have him listed as a step-son. I don't have anything on the adoption to confirm that there was one. Freddie was born 9/2/1890 which was before his mother, Clara Mae Trentham, married John Lewis Gosa on 1/13/1892 in Lamar County, AL which could lead one to surmise that Freddie was a son by a prior marriage or relationship and he may or may not be illegitimate depending on the marital status of his parents.

I am interested in checking into John Baker or Barker as I have Baker kin on my father's side who hailed from NC, TN, and VA to name a few and I am working on there connection(s) to Pocahontas.

I haven't looked into the AL Baker's much but will gladly look into them next week if you can send me anthing additional you may have on John Baker and/or Freddie Austin Gosa. Are you a descendant of Freddie? If so by which wife and child? I am also interested in your Burton surname as they are another surname I am researching that connects many times into my lines. Please email me direct any information on living individuals....

In "Links to Lamar County" (Alabama) vol. 8 number 3 there is a copy of a letter written to Samuel T. Gosa from Joseph A. Leech and Margaret Leech. The letter is addressed Dear Brother. My question is "Is Margaret a Gosa? if so who is her father."
Family tradition says that Margaret was Gosa and that she and Joseph were married in Holly Springs, Mississippi. I know that they lived in Lawrence County Al. and in LA before finally ending up in Panola County Texas where both of them died. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I would be willing to share the Leech information that I have.
Margaret

I have reason to believe that my g-grandmother was Martha Jane Gosa who married a Dodson. She had a daughter Levica Emeline who married Francis Leroy Miller. Before she married Francis(Frank) she had a daughter out of weblock with Rile Robertson by the name of Mollie. This is my grandmother. I find Jane living with and around the Gosa's and I find her at age 17 in the 1850 census living with James W. Gosa in Marion Co. I can't find her married to a Dodson in 1860 and in 1870 she is head of the family. In 1880 she is living in the house with Frank and Emeline. If anyone can help me with this line, I would appreciate it.

Would you share information on Lisa Gosa who married Francies Leroy Miller? I just found last week that he raised my grandmother Mollie Dodson Robertson. In the 1880 census I find htem living in Lamar Co. Al. He was forst married to emeline Dodson and they are found in the 1900 census in Monroe Co. Ms. Do you know who the children of each of the wives were? I have tried to find them in the 1910 census but they seemed too have disappeared. Then the are there in 1920 but not in 1930. Mollie married John A. McDonald. Then two of his sons married into the Gosa family. It was daughters of Henry Gosa.

Mary Elizabeth Gosa married Francis Leroy Miller after his first wife Emeline Dodson died. Emeline was my g-grandmother. Her daughter Mollie who was the daughter of Rile Robertson and Emeline Dodson was born in Lamar or Fayette Co.Alabama. You can find them in the 1880 census there and in Monroe Co.Al. in 1900. Soon after this Emeline dies and in December of 1902 he married Mary Elizabeth. He was about 30 years older than Mary. Do you know if she remarried after Frank died and who? I would appreciate any help on this family.

Thanks I didn't have some of this and it is helpful. I have other Rainwater's who connect to other collateral lines. Those Rainwater's begin with John Rainwater born 1695 in Danbury, VA and died 5/1777 in Surry County, NC. The descendants migrate from NC to SC to GA and AL I believe William Rainwater who married Elizabeth Lucas connects to these other Rainwater lines but will have to piece together where. Elkaney's son John Wyley Rainwater appears on the 1880 Lamar Conty, AL census as John W. Rainwaters as do 2 other Rainwater families.

Looking forward to hearing what you find.

Elizabeth Lucas is also of interest because of:

Mary Elizabeth Catherie Lucas married William Wesley Gosa. Mary was born 7/20/1842 in AL. William was born 6/24/1834 in AL and was the s/o James Wallace Gosa, Sr. & Elizabeth Ann Young.

It is highly probable that Elizabeth and Mary are kin somehow.

It still makes you my half 5th cousin. :0)

I have all of Bessie and Virgil's kids as Roden's... If I look for census for them I will make sure to check Boden. Unless I'm looking for kin to contact or how someone is kin to me I try to stop at about 1900. Looking forward to what you have gleaned from relatives.

I haven't been able to retrace your steps on the 1920 census for Virgil. I checked AR, MS, AL +. If you figure out how you pulled it up please let me know. The Roden children's names didn't help much in my seach either. Virgil's dad was on the 1880 Fayette County, AL census though but Virgil wasn't born until 1883. Do you know why Bessie died in OK?
Tanya,

Thanks much. My 5 year old is 5 days older than yours and my 2 year old thank goodness is not twins. My sister has twins and they can be a handful. More so from when they were younger. My other kids are almost 7 and 15 1/2. So I work here and there as I am able.

Wow, I didn't try Roberts. Malettia/Molettia was 60 or 62. It looks like 62 to me but the index says 60. 62 fits with her date of birth. Malettia is Malettia Rainwater, Bessie's mother. Next to Bessie's name appears to have a M for married. Not sure where Virgil is but perhaps he is home working on their farm. All Moletia Rainwater Roberts children are helping out on the farm so perhaps she needed their help and Bessie was summoned home to help and for a funeral and reading of the will. This is only supposition as I don't know for sure when Oliver Roberts died.

The index for 1930 says Virgil B. Rodes so that is why I couldn't find it earlier. Virgil is somewhere in 1920 but at this time I don't know where.
I find the censuses invaluable. Even with Soundex sometimes I can't find people. Sometimes they are not in the index even though they were there.

All kids can be a handful but worth it.

If you have exhausted every source does that include the old newspapers? They aren't indexed so have to be reviewed one at a time. I wish they would microfilm them, burn it CD-Rom and sell it. I know I would purchase it.

I didn't know about Clay County, MS but I will check into it.

James Wallace Gosa, Sr. died in Marion or Monroe County, MS abt 1851. His son, James Wallace Gosa Jr., died in MS in 1864. Haven't found proof of either yet.

Brothers of James Wallace Gosa, Sr. were in MS so I will need to work more on them.

James Lonzo Gosa died in Monroe County, MS. He is my half 1st cousin 4 times removed. He was married to Elizabeth Cunningham who is my 1st cousin 3 times removed.

I looked at most of George's kids and they stayed put in AL.

Monroe and Clay Counties, AL are just over the boder. Some of my GOSA stuff I haven't looked at for a few years so it is good I am reviewing some stuff.

I will work on sorting the MS Gosa's.

I try to take pictures of the gravestones but have found it is best to transcribe the headstones also in case the data can't be deciphered from the pictures. I use a digital camera but learned the hard way to transcribe also after having to go back as the picture wasn't easy to read the inscription. Luckily it was a small cemetery and we were there for a few days. But I'm sure you know also young children get bored pretty quickly in cemeteries. Therefore I also try to acquire cemetery listings prior to visiting so I can go directly where I need to go and be there for a minimal amount of time.
I'm sure she loves her time with the kids.

I have done some work in Clay County, MS I just remembered by reviewing my database. I didn't make it very far in linking them together though. There are black and white Gosa's in the area so have to tread lightly to verify which lines are which. There are black Gosa lines that are our kin. I don't know if these ones are some of them.

Like you I did not inherit the Gosa surname but we both are descendants of Gosa's.

The Heritage Book is Vol. 38. At this point I don't know all your various branches to tell you if it would be worth you purchasing it. A book in this price range I would have to have lots of kin in it which I do. A cousin worked on the book so I knew there would be lots of info pertinent to me. Lamar County was a stronghold for several of my branches so it made sense. Also the committee who worked on it was very dedicated. When I spend a lot on a book I prefer to preview it if possible. Some Heritage Books are better than others. If you have kin working on it you are pretty assured you will find good things in it.

The Rainwater line is getting more suspicious. James Rainwater married Charity Fowler in 1796 in NC. Fowler is a main line for me but I can't connect her to any of my Fowler's just yet. I am looking in Surry County, NC though. Lots of Rainwater lines were here also. There are also Rainwater's in Ray County, MO which is a county I am interested in due to my Ray main line. The Ray County, MO Rainwater's were also descendants of Surry County, NC Rainwater's.

I have branched out my main surnames a lot due to the massive amounts of intermarriages. It has helped a lot with the big picture on how all this is connected. Certain names and locations are red flags for me.

I am glad I have helped you. I enjoy helping cousins as helping them also helps me. I appreciate your enthusiasm and thankfulness. Glad your days have been so good of late!

Tanya,

I love my copy to and it was well worth the money. I know there are gaps in the book though and depending on your specific tree the book may or may not be worth the money. I also know that this particular book is far superior to other counties that have been done.

The intermarriages of neighbors and families are lots of places where my families were. I only wish I could acquire books of the same caliber as the Lamar County one.

I don't know for sure if it would be as useful to Malinda as it is or me as I am not sure how long her line was in Lamar County. Also I am not sure on her other main lines.

As far as the spouses I have found them sometimes to be hidden under other surnames and in articles where I wouldn't think of them had I not been scanning pages for information.

The Gosa's moved around a lot. Some stayed put in Lamar County, AL while others continued to migrate. There is a nice stronghold in Lamar County.

The articles in the Heritage Book have who wrote them.

The Gosa line goes back to Matthew Gosa or Gossee Sr. who was born abt 1700 in VA.

One of his sons was Aaron Gosa, Sr. bor 1735-1737 in VA and died abt 1806 in Fairfield County, SC. Aaron was a seaman. I have the following but don't know it's origin but would love to find it:

***
Two of the Gossee sons turned to seafaring in the 1750's. They sailed on ships plying between the Cheasepeak Bay ports and the ports of New York, Conneticut, Massecheusets, and Maine. One of them married and settled in Mass. from this line came Jean, Comfort, and Richard all served in the Revolutionary War. The other seaman married and settled in Conneticut from this line came Aaron, Simon, and James Wallace.
***

Actually, the family was in Lamar Co., Alabama for a while. They were also in Marion and Franklin counties. Some eventually crossed the line into MS.

James Wallace Jr. was born in KY. He married Lavina Simmons (b. in TN and supposedly of Cherokee descent). Levi was born in Lamar Co., AL. in 1852.

This page has a lot of good info on the family.
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/h/Marilyn-Yvo...

I sent the link pertaining to James Jr. But scroll through the pages. Terry Gosa tends to be the expert on our family in the AL/MS area.

Hope that helps

Mary Ann Maria Gosa Grayfield Gosa

Are Grayfield Gosa or Mary Ann Maria Gosa in your book? My3great grandmother was Mary Ann Maria Gosa Spencer. She was born in SC but married Edgar Spencer in Greene county AL. The only Gosa's in the census in Greene co. at that time were Grayfield (wife Sarah Coleman) and Ferdinand (wife Savilla). Ferdinand Mary Ann were the correct ages to have been Grayfield's children. Looking for verification. If I'm right, there is lots of information on the internet on Sarah Coleman's ancestors. I also heard at one time who Grayfield's parents were, but I don't have that information with me now.
