Hello all,

I not getting very far with this side of my family tree.
My great grandmother was born in Stanford Rivers in Essex, i also am sure i a have seen records stating her fathers was from there also. Elizabeth's mother was Rachel D Clark, her parents Thomas B F Clark and Elizabeth S Wingate.

I have also had more than one e-mail before now suggesting to me that the name Gosling, with slight spelling and prononciation differences comes from either Sweden or Finland.

If any one has anything new to add to this side of my family, i would be pleased to hear about anything.

Regards
Les Dear

do you have a missing James Gosling? I have one without parents

hi does anyone have a James Gosling son/grandson of William Gosling a farmer who disappeared I am hoping so as I am looking for people who share the same James Gosling in their tree my James was a Sailor/waterman who died in 1887 in Winlaton Gateshead I don't know his year of birth or place of birth as it keeps changing on the 1861-1881 census from Essex to Hebburn then Scotland but I believe he was born between 1835-1840, James was married twice 1st wife Ann? and 2nd wife Susannah who they had 6 children all burn in Hebburn, Durham the children were Mary Jane, John William, Elizabeth Ann, Susannah Dobson, James and Joseph. James was the son of William Gosling a farmer

I have a copy of James's 2nd marriage certificate he was married 08/11/1868 to Susanna Dobson in the parish church of St John Newcastle upon Tyne his age is given as full, condition is widower, Rank or profession is seaman, residence at time of marriage- the parish fathers name William Gosling - rank - Farmer witnesses at wedding are John Dobson (Susannah's brother) and John Findley.

The 1881 census has James and family living at 29 Lyne Street,Hebburn James is aged 41 a waterman born in Scotland ( though this is a ditto from the previous family). RG11/5028 Folio 38 pg 40

The 1871 census has the family living at the square, Hebburn James is aged 31 with no occupation born Durham Hebburn but I believe that Jame's details could have been put in the boxes for the person above him on the census as the person above him is william pearson aged 81 a waterman born Essex Bradfield.

RG10/5044 Folio 14 pg 21

The 1861 Census has James living with his 1st wife Ann who was born in Scotland their address is 19 Wilson St, Westoe South Shields both are aged 26 James is a Sailor who was born Essex Bradford. RG9/3790 Folio 18 pg 30.

the death certificate for Ann Gosling Jame's 1st wife she died 10/04/1867 in Ellison Street (which ties in with his 2nd wife) of heart disease aged 28, James's occupation is listed as a steamlen or steamden (merchant service).

James died on the 01/02/1887 and cause of death was accidental drowning in the river Tyne at Blaydon and it also says on the certificate that an inquest was held on the 03/02/1887

Hello all,

I'm interested in connecting with anyone who can give me more information about the Gosling's in Ontario. We are particularly interested in the exact connection with Charles Ellsworth Gosling who was born I think? York co Ontario(or else lived there for awhile), ad married Margaret Anna Hudson, and lived in Brooklyn, NY at least after 1917. He had siblings Leila and Ada b 1887 and parent Thomas Gosling and Rachel Wilson.

We are interested to know which Thomas Gosling was his father, and how either of them are related to Ellsworth Gosling who lived in Brooklyn as well. This Ellsworth Gosling line traces father Charles Gosling, b. 1851, his father William Woodley b 1814, and then James-Jeremiah Gosling back to Devon, England originally.

Thanks for writing anyone! ANY information on any of these lines/areas is helpful, even if not directly related.

Hi, I am a historian regarding football in Malta. Sliema Wanderers Football Club in 1909-10 had a player in their ranks by the name of W. Gosling.

Can someone help provide the first name? Was it William? Wilfred?

I believe he was in the Army or Navy as in that era Malta was a British colony.

Thank you all
Tonio Farrugia
toniofar@maltanet.net
Thank you Robin, that`s very interesting because for the past three years I have been working on this with a contact in the USA. Her initials are KK she and is descended from Esther Gosling (Pitt) of Smethwick.
We have both got stuck at the same point as you and cannot yet prove we are related, but guess we are from the next generation back.
I have been to Smethwick Library family history centre twice, to no avail!
I`m on david.gosling@talktalk.net and would welcome direct contact so we can confer more easily. I`ll copy this response of yours to KK.
Kind regards
David

Richard Gosling of Smethwick b1796 and married to Esther Pitt was my GGG grandfather. They had 10 children. The oldest Mary married Isaiah Cooper. They had four children and one of their two sons, Henry Cooper, was my great grandfather and he fathered 11 children. Richard Gosling had been a boat steerer on the canals and my Grandmother Gertrude Copper, along with most of the rest of the family between them, was also a boat steerer until she married my grandfather James Colclough.

Certainly when I was a kid just about all my known relatives lived around the Smethwick area (as a lot of my cousins still do).

I suppose Richard could have been John and Hannah's son but I'd guess it more likely he was a nephew. Whilst I can give you plenty of information about Richard's descendants, so far I've had no luck with his ancestors or siblings.

James Gosling Brickwall

Hi I am trying to trace people who share the same James Gosling in their tree. My James was a merchant sailor who died in 1887 aged 45 in Winlaton Gateshead I don't know his exact year of birth or place of birth as it keeps changing on the 1861-1881 census from Essex to Hebburn then Scotland but I believe he was born between 1835-1840, James was married twice once to Ann ( surname unknown and unable to trace marriage but believed to be around 1860, she died 04/04/1867 aged 28 in Hebburn, Durham and 2nd wife Susanne Dobson who they had 6 children all born in Hebburn the children were Mary Jane, John William, Elizabeth Ann, Susannah Dobson, James and Joseph. James was the son of William Gosling a farmer ( according to his 2nd marriage certificate) does this ring any bells or can any one help. I do know that he wasn't born on 29/04/1841 in Lexden as I already have this certificate and it is not him and I know he was not born or married in Scotland as I have checked.
Thank You

Hi Les

The Goslings' seem to be a troublesome bunch for tracking down and William and Elizabeth seem to be favoured names among the clan (I have 3 Williams and 4 Elizabeths not including any sibling's children on my tree so far).

I think unfortunately I am going to have to get back to you at a later date with this. Family matters have meant I have had to postpone my research for the past 6 months and I am now unable to make head nor tail of my research notes :( so it looks like I am going to have to back track over my current findings and check where I found that information and go from there.

Part of the problem is that I have not traced any sibling marriages on this branch of our tree and as my husband is descended from Charles Gosling b.1812 and all of the brothers and siblings are likely to have married by the start of the census records, tracing them is going to be challenging, but I will certainly look everything over and let you know of any findings :)

Many Thanks

Jacqueline

My Great grandmother was Elizabeth Gosling born 1866 Stanford Rivers, Essex. her father was William Gosling born 1866 then nothing after that.

The reason for telling you this, i have been told on one side of my great parents side there is an Irish connection. Dont think its on my great grand fathers side William Rumble born 1860, Threashers Bush, Harlow, Essex. As i have traced his family back to the 1600,s all born in England.

I justwondered if thats why maybe you have hit a brick wall, let me know your thoughts.
Regards
Les Dear

Hello Sue,

So good to hear from you; let's connect more via email to discuss details, someone sent me some information from this Jeremiah Gosling and there seem to be too many similarities/coincidences(?) with descendant names and dates that he could very well be the same person I am looking for. . .all I had to go was a handwritten tree by someone in the family who is no longer alive so I don't know what his sources were nor have I been able to find any of his names in any census records, obviously need to search more but would be very interested to connect with you more. . .

If I don't hear back from you after awhile, I'll try to write the email on the reference above. .

Bye for now, Pam
I was just searching for Walter Gosling born about 1879 in Philadelphia,PA. He married Amy Stockham who was born about 1882 also in Philadelphia and died in 1966. Amy was the daughter of William Randolph Stockham born 1839 in Pennsylvania and Rosena (1844-1938). Amy Stockham and Walter Gosling had at least one child, Margaret Gosling who was born 1903 in Philadelphia. Someone recently sent a picture of Walter that appeared to be taken about 1900. Would be happy to send picture if anyone is interested. He is no doubt related to the Gosling family of England.

I have just come across your message re Thomas Gosling as I am now researching my own family. If this is the same Thomas - Thomas Gosling was born in 1845 and I am a direct decendent to his brother James. Thomas' mother was Mary Ann Goodey and his father James. He had several brothers and sisters. James, Eleanor, John, Elizabeth, Mary Ann and Emma. They lived in Powis Street Woolwich. I can find them on the census from 1844 - 1881. There are, however, several families of Goslings in the Woolwich and Plumstead area so this may not be your Thomas. Coincidentaly my maiden name is Gosling and my family lived in Brewery Road Plumstead!

I'm wondering if he is the son of David Gosling and Sarah Pike.

Hi folks,

I'm stuck! I'd like to try and verify as much as possible before I spend any money!

The childrens details are;
Rose GOSLING - Q2 1873 Kensington 1a 30
Henry C GOSLING - 1875 (app) Kensington
Amy STOKER - Q1 1888 Kensington 1a 125
Edith STOKER - Q3 1890 Chelsea 1a 383, died Q1 1892 1a 344

Census details are;
RG11; Piece: 38; Folio: 7; Page: 8
RG12; Piece: 57; Folio 38; Page 8

Any information would be much appreciated.

Chat soon.
Hi Jerilyn. I am trying to find information on the GOSLING family in New Jersey. I have a Samuel TOMLIN who married Rachel GOSLING, 1771 in Gloucester, New Jersey. They hard a daughter Henrietta who was born, 1781 in Cape May, New Jersey. Henrietta married Joseph SUTTON 1802. Do you have any information on this family? Thank you
Cheryl C.
